 American heroes on

 Memorial Day

As Memorial Day rolls around again this year, take an opportunity to remember the American military men and women on the front lines from the American Revolution to Iraq and Afghanistan today.  Click here  to view a list of books and, in some cases, videos dealing with personal accounts of war. There are autobiographies of people like Audie Murphy, the most decorated American soldier in WWII, and Theodore Roosevelt with his experiences as a Rough Rider during the Spanish American War. In addition, there are collections of letters and personal accounts by a variety of American soldiers and sailors from the American Revolution, the Civil War, WWI, WWII and Korea, as well as from those serving today in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Greetings!

It goes without saying that the Pasadena Public Library has gone through some significant changes over the past year or so as we've made the same adjustments to fewer staff as other City departments, while seeing the retirement of Sheila Henderson after a decade of dynamic leadership here. But I'm pleased to say the change I'm noting today is of a much happier kind.

Effective April 4, Mayor Isbell has appointed Kimberly Archer as the Acting Library Director for Pasadena. As many of you may know, Kim has served in a number of positions within our library, culminating as Public Services Manager before her present appointment. In addition to her fifteen years of experience before coming to us, her extensive knowledge of all aspects of our library services and needs makes her an outstanding choice for this job, a job I know she will excel at.

As a degreed librarian, Kim brings exactly the kind of professionalism and management style we need to move forward. During my eight months as interim director, I've had an opportunity to meet and work with many of the staff Kim will be leading, and I am very confident the initiative and commitment I've seen from all library staffers will be just what is needed to maintain the forward momentum and to offer even more innovative approaches to providing these crucial services at a time when less resources are available to fund them.

It's going to be a tall order. Much of the state funding that provided databases, materials support, special programs and enhanced services or equipment is in jeopardy, even at a time when more of our residents have come to rely on the library as a lifeline to information and services they need to stay in the mainstreams of social engagement and employment advance. If there ever was a time for the community to support its library, this is it. I would urge readers of this newsletter to seriously consider how they might give just a bit of their time and talents to support an institution our Founders considered essential to the continued liberty and prosperity of our country.

While I have turned over the daily supervision of the Pasadena Library, I will continue to support it in my role as the City's Publications Manager, with a vastly expanded appreciation of what it takes to keep a library running smoothly, while trying to tell that story more effectively. It's a story that deserves a much wider audience.

My final words in this capacity are a sincere thanks to the entire library management and staff, as well as the Library Board and Friends of the Pasadena Public Library, all of whom have made my time with them one of real learning and friendship. I wouldn't have traded this experience for anything.

Publications Manager, City of Pasadena

Interlibrary Loan

Books

The Pasadena Public Library System provides thousands of books, movies, and other materials for our   patrons to enjoy. On occasion, however, you might need something we don't own. No problem. We have several options. First, we check to see if another local library owns the item. If they do, we encourage you to go that library, get a card from them, and check out the item. This is the quickest way to get what you are looking for.

We can also purchase the item in question. If the material is new and would be enjoyed by more than one patron, this is usually the choice we make. We highly value patron recommendations. It lets us know what types of materials to purchase. You can fill out a Suggestion Card and return it to the library. If you include your name and library card number, we will put a hold on the item for you, should we decide to purchase it. That way, you are first in line. As a rule, we do not purchase textbooks or other expensive academic materials. We also do not purchase games or software.

Sometimes, however, you just might need an item for a project right away, or our copy might be missing. In this case, we can try to borrow the item from another library that owns the item. This is called an Interlibrary Loan (ILL).  In order for us to do this, you must have had a permanent library card for at least 3 months. Patrons may not request ILLs with a temporary card. Also, you can't owe any fines or have any overdue items.

To order an ILL, ask a librarian for an ILL form. These forms are available at both library locations.  Librarians can assist you in filling out the form.  In addition, a form is available to fill out online. It is currently located at the top of our library's catalog webpage. (http://halos.halan.lib.tx.us/search~S4)

You may also use a new feature called the Texas Group Catalog, which is part of Worldcat, a database of all the libraries in the world. Instructions on how to request a book or item are available by asking at one of the Customer Service Desks (Adult Reference).  The website for the Texas Group Catalog is http://texasgroup.worldcat.org/.

Most loan requests are filled in about two to four weeks. However, this may vary according to availability of the item. ILL items may be checked out for a period ranging from several days to four weeks, depending on the lending library's rules. Rare books and microforms are often sent for "IN LIBRARY USE ONLY." You will have to use these items at the library. As soon as the item arrives and is processed, the item will be placed on HOLD for you, and you will be notified. You may request an extension of the loan period by calling 713-477-0276 (ex. 4125).  Requests to renew must be made one week before the item due date. Many libraries however, will not renew books or other materials.

If an ILL item is lost or damaged, the charges billed to Pasadena Public Library by the lender will be charged to the customer. These charges can be considerable if the lender is an academic institution or special library and if the loaned material is comparatively rare.  You will be charged a minimum fee of $50.00 for lost or damaged items. Our library does not charge to process an ILL. However, some libraries charge to borrow ILL items. Pasadena Public Library does not pay to borrow items. If you want to borrow the item with a fee attached, then you must pay the fee before we borrow the item. Finally, ILL items incur late fees, like any other item borrowed by a patron.
