Martin Luther King Jr.

* Presently there are 730+ U.S. cities that have  streets named after King.

* From 1957 until his death in 1968, he traveled more than six million miles. He gave over 2500 speeches during his travels. He also wrote five books & published numerous articles in newspapers & magazines.

* Martin Luther King Sr. and Martin Luther King Jr. both started out as Michael. After a trip to Germany in 1934, when MLK Jr. was only five, his father changed both their names to Martin Luther to honor the German Protestant leader with that name.

* MLK Jr. started college at Morehouse College at the age of 15. He never formally graduated high school, but he has two bachelor's degrees and a Ph.D.

* As of this date, Dr. King is the only American (excluding U.S. Presidents) to be honored with a federal holiday. Even the presidents of the U.S. have to share a day (Presidents Day), but King has a day all to himself.

* King had originally planned to become a doctor. Instead, he majored in sociology, graduated from Morehouse College with a B.A., then entered Crozer Theological Seminary. Both King's father and maternal grandfather were ministers. King was ordained a Baptist minister in 1948.

* He won the Nobel Peace Prize for leading non-violent civil rights demonstrations in 1964.

Greetings!

The Pasadena Public Library as your practical partner

The New Year is traditionally a time when we resolve to break old habits and develop positive new ones that contribute to our health, wealth, and wisdom. I'd like to suggest one New Year's resolution that will certainly meet those criteria.

Have you thought of your library as a place to pick up a volume of light reading to relax with?  Perhaps a good spot for children to enjoy an environment that encourages the development of lifelong reading interests? The destination of choice when a difficult homework assignment awaits?

These and many other examples are often what we think of when we consider the value library resources provide for our community...and for us personally.  But have you ever considered the benefit of cold, hard cash from your library visit? Real money in your pocket, savings that free up funds to do other things with? If not, I hope you'll resolve to begin thinking in a new way about your library in the new year.

The fact is, your Pasadena Public Library has been working hard to provide even more materials--from research oriented to recreational--to enable YOU to keep those extra dollars in your own pocket.

The first stop on our savings tour might be the extensive database that the Pasadena Public Library offers users. If the word "database" makes you cringe, just think of it as an online version of materials that are often in print first. I'd like to make you aware of a few that may be just what you need to keep those hard-earned dollars:

  • Handy with tools and trying to avoid an expensive car repair? The Chilton Library provides photographs, diagnostics designed by instructors, step-by-step repair procedures, Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) maintenance schedules, wiring diagrams, recalls and Technical Service Bulletins for automobiles and light trucks, all in one web site.
  • Why pay for expensive test preparation materials when you can get ready for that civil service, military, or professional licensing exam for the price of a library card? The cards are free, by the way.
  • Don't want to pay for expensive audio books for your commute? Our Overdrive connection brings you audio books, e-books, and videos for your PC, Mac or mobile phone in MP3 format, and makes road rage a passing stage.

I haven't even mentioned the best-selling books and  DVD titles that we carry that let you indulge your particular entertainment passion without doing irreparable harm to your budget. And for those with business on their mind, our Business Center offers computers, Net access and even software training classes that provide invaluable career assistance without requiring you to pay that monthly access charge or software update cost.

These are just a few of the practical ways you can save money when you develop the habit of going to your library's resources first for your information, education and entertainment needs. Check this month's Library Savings table to find out how much money you can save. You'll be amazed at how much can be saved when you make the library your practical partner. And learn more about Overdrive and how it can enrich your daily commute or quiet downtime with a vast assortment of quality listening and viewing materials.

So ring in the New Year with us by resolving to learn more about your Pasadena Public Library. There's a world of wonderful learning and enjoyment here for you to experience, and we'd love the chance to help you discover it in 2011.

Happy New Year from your Pasadena Public Library staff!

Did you receive an e-book reader, iPod or MP3 player under the Christmas tree?
Download free eBooks, Audio Books and Videos 24/7 to your PC, MP3, or PDA at home, in the office or from anywhere in the world! This free digital media collection from the Houston Area Digital Media Catalog is now available to Pasadena Public Library card holders. The collection includes best-selling audio books, adult and juvenile downloadable video offerings and a selection of popular e-books. In December, 15,000+ public domain ebooks were added to the collection of downloadable items available 24/7.

Click here to link to our digital media catalog website.

First you need to determine if your audio or eBook device is supported. Adobe® EPUB & PDF eBooks work on most computers, Sony and Nook readers. The media catalog website has a list of compatible and noncompatible devices. For example, Kindle Readers are not supported.

There is also a guided tour available for first-time users and users who want to download material to Apple devices.

Over 45,000 titles are available for download. With the exception of the public domain e-books added in December, the available titles are listed in our catalog.

Book Club Banter

It's the beginning of a new year, and a new you, so why not branch out and join one of the library's book clubs?  There are 5 good reasons to come aboard in 2011:

  1. To find new books - A book club can expand your reading interests with new titles and authors you might never have found on your own.
  2. To meet new and interesting people - You will be introduced to new friends from the community and learn about more than just their book opinions- you will share in their lives.
  3. To find some great conversation - Some books just need to be talked about. Share all the questions and emotions you have when reading with others.
  4. To enjoy some delicious snacks - Every book club includes  wonderful treats to enjoy during the meeting!
  5. With three different book clubs between both library branches - there is a perfect club just waiting for you!

The month of January has great titles in store for you. Tea Time Mysteries will be reading Claire and Present Danger by Gillian Roberts and Book Bites will be reading  A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. The First Monday Book Club takes a break in January and resumes in in February with Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell.  Everyone is invited to join in at the next meeting:
