Daylight Saving Time

On Sunday, November 7, 2010 at 2 a.m., Daylight Saving Time ends in the United States clock

Every Spring  on the second Sunday in March at 2 a.m.we set our clocks  an hour ahead and "lose" an hour during the night ("Spring forward"), and each Fall  on the first Sunday of November at 2 a.m. we set our clocks back one hour and "gain" an hour ("Fall back"), thus returning to Standard Time.

The phrase "Spring forward, Fall back" helps us remember which direction to shift our clocks.

S o remember to "Fall Back"  and set your clocks back an hour.

movie poster

Set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, and based on the book by Cressida Cowell, this action comedy tells the story of Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn't exactly fit in with his tribe's longstanding traditions of heroic dragon slayers.

Hiccup's world is turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges him and fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view.

In today's fast-paced world, it seems as if the commodity most in demand is our time. No matter how hard we try, there's always more to do and less time to fit it in, it seems.

We at the Pasadena Public Library understand, and we have solutions that just might save you some of that valuable time, whether you decide to use it for furthering your career objectives, enriching your understanding of the world, or just taking some well-deserved time to relax. Here are a couple of examples.

If you'd like to save time when you already know what materials you want to check out, why not take advantage of our Hold Request and Pick-up service? We'll have your items ready to go when you arrive, and you'll be on your way in no time.

Have a few extra moments to spare when you're here? Our recently opened Sprinkles Café offers delicious light fare and beverages you can enjoy right in the middle of our Central Library. Now, there's no need to choose between staying at the library a little longer and getting a bite to eat on the way home.

If you're interested in improving work, career or interview competency, our Career Collection selections pull print materials and databases together into a powerful tool to help make your career goals a reality. Let us do the time-consuming research that gives you a head start in mastering crucial career skills.

These are just a few of the ways that developing proficiency in using your library can open up an ever-expanding world of helpful information, even as it saves you valuable time.

Come in, talk to one of our librarians, and learn even more ways you can make your life richer and more rewarding when you take advantage of your library's resources.

Isn't it time you benefitted from all your library has to offer?

Celebrating Our Veterans

As we celebrate Veteran's Day this November, it is important to remember why we commemorate this occasion and just how it came to be.   From 1914 to 1918, World War I was fought overseas.  Over 70 million military personnel fought in what became one of the largest wars in our history, where over 20 million soldiers were wounded or lost their lives.  After four years of fighting, an armistice, (or temporary cease fire) was called between the Allied Nations and Germany.  This went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Although   the Treaty of Versailles was signed the following June, officially ending the war, 11/11/18 became recognized as the end to "the war to end all wars."

flag and soldierOn the first anniversary of this important day, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919 as Armistice Day.  He informed the public that the day should be set aside to host parades and celebrations as we remember those who served and fell in the war.  November 11th was not designated as a legal holiday in the U.S. until 1938 and it was primarily set aside to honor the veterans of WWI.  After the U.S. went through WWII and the Korean War, the 83rd Congress amended the Act of 1938 by changing the word "Armistice" to the word "Veterans".  November 11th then became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

This date has been declared a national holiday in most of the Allied Nations that fought in WWI.  It is known as Armistice Day in many of the countries, as well as Rememberance Day in the UK and the Day of Peace in Belgium.  In various parts of the world, people stop for a 2 minute moment of silence at 11:00 a.m. as a sign of respect for all of those who died in the war.

The Pasadena Public Library has many books that celebrate the dedication and sacrifice of our veterans.  Come in to the library to check one out or stop off at the information desk if you want to find out more information on those who have served our country.
