anticipation as one transitions from one season to the next. We look forward to

Advisory
Board Member Recognized for Volunteer Efforts!
On Tuesday,
July 6, library advisory board member, Suzanne Sims and her son, Chris Sims, received
City of Pasadena recognition for their volunteer efforts. Mayor Johnny
Isbell presented plaques to both and expressed gratitude for the service the
City receives from the pair. Mrs. Sims' husband was present to witness the
recognition.
Mrs. Sims was appointed to the library advisory
board in 2004. In 2005 - 2006, she
served as lay representative to the Houston Area Library System (HALS) of the Texas
State Library and Archives Commission, under which the library is accredited
for system membership. As lay representative she also volunteered to serve on the HALS
continuing education committee. Tireless in her enthusiasm, Suzanne began
serving as board liaison to the Friends of the Pasadena Public Library, and in
October 2006 she was elected vice-president, a position she continues to hold.
Suzanne Sims and Chris Sims receive their volunteer award from Mayor Isbell | The
renovated Central facility included a bookstore to be managed by volunteers. When a coordinator for this project was sought, Suzanne volunteered. She and
Chris rolled up their sleeves and began the challenging task of coordinating
efforts to organize not only the materials to be offered in the bookstore, but
also to manage staffing it. The bookstore opened June 2009, and has since
become a popular source for gently-used books, videos and audio materials.
Unexpectedly, it has also become a community hub. Bookstore volunteers have attracted
a strong following of regular customers seeking not only reading and viewing
material but camaraderie. Suzanne and Chris have put in long hours and much
hard work to ensure the success of the bookstore. Chris is the expert on many
of the subjects & genres and has identified opportunities to increase the bookstore's
potential earnings. Both are to be commended for their dedication to the
library and our community. The City of Pasadena's Mayor and City Council
applaud their commitment as volunteers and so do we.

Do
you like to read books?
Are you up for an interesting reading suggestion? Do you
wonder why some good (and not so good) books are considered classics? Do you
like to share your reading opinions with others? If you answered yes to any of
these questions, then we invite you to join the Pasadena Public Library's newest
book club, which will begin meeting at the Central Library once a month
beginning in late September and will meet the last Friday of every month at 4pm. We will be reading a selection of contemporary
classics and seeing what the fuss is all about. Stop by for refreshments and a
great book discussion! Can't meet up at the library? Don't
worry! We will also be hosting an online discussion of the monthly
reading selection on our new Book Club Blog, coming in time for the first book
club in September. So, there will be two ways to share your opinions and see
what insight others may have to share on some much talked about books. Want a quick preview? Bookmark this address to keep up with all our upcoming titles - September 2010 Selection September's Book Club selection will be Water for
Elephants by Sara Gruen. This best selling-book is about a young
veterinary student, Jacob Jankowski, who leaves college and joins a second-rate
circus during the Great Depression. Amidst a world of freaks and misfits, Jacob
finds himself in love with a beautiful young circus star, and an unusual
friendship with a stubborn and untrained elephant named Rosie. Stop by the
library to borrow your copy of this best-selling book. Watch for more
information to come on our first meeting date and time! If you have any
