A Message from the 2012-2013 Campaign Chair Joseph Pagliaro Jr.
"Community matters." - Joseph Pagliaro Sr. (1940-2004) (Campaign Chair 1999)
Just like his father, Joe believes that the Valley is a very special place to live and work and that the Community Campaign is an integral part of Valley life. And that is why he's returning to serve as Chair of this year's annual Community Giving Campaign. He feels that the key to a successful campaign will be to expand the level of involvement from the community.
To achieve this, the Community Campaign goal is being stretched to 1.2 million dollars to keep up with the allocations and also to support the level of service our staff gives to the community.

Allocations Announced
 |
Committee members reviewing applications |
|
Valley United Way's Board of Directors has announced the awarding of $532,000 in allocations for the next twelve months. The Board decision came at the end of a two month process that started with agencies submitting budget requests in May. Twenty-nine allocations committee volunteers working under the leadership of committee chair Adrienne Cabral then visited with the applicants to review their programs and budgets. Following the visits, the volunteers met to review their findings and to make their recommendations to the Board of Directors which approved the allocations for the period from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013.

Valley United Way Allocates $10,000 to TEAM's Family Resource Center
|
The Family Resource Center is Valley United Way's newest partner having just been approved through this year's allocations process. United Way is a major supporter of early childhood initiatives in the Valley, and this latest allocation drew this response from Dave Morgan:
"I'm in awe by the Valley United Way's support for TEAM's Family Resource Center initiative. The FRC's work is a critically important support network for parents and early childhood systems in the Valley. This allocation to the Family Resource Center is a testament to the United Way's commitment to family and community throughout the Valley."
-David Morgan, Vice President - TEAM Inc.

Fletcher Thompson Wins 2012 Corporate Cup
In the closest finish since 2004, Fletcher Thompson has won its first Griffin Hospital Community Corporate Cup! The margin of victory over defending champion CDW-G was only .42 by a 143.34 to 141.92 score. The last time the results were this close was in 2004when Tele-Media Cable (Now Comcast) topped PerkinElmer by.25. The only other time the results were this close was in 1998 when Birmingham Group (Now BHcare) and Griffin Hospital tied for the championship. Ironically, that was the last time that either team won the competition. PerkinElmer rebounded from their tough loss in 2007when they won the first of four straight titles.

Thoughts From Our Youth Leaders
Last month we told you than Parvati Vaish would be spending her summer volunteering as an intern with us. This month she's back telling her story and those of three of the members who pariticpated during the last year.
"The Valley United Way Youth Leadership Program has been an eye-opening experience as it has changed my perspective of leadership and myself. For those unfamiliar with the program, let me say, it is an experience of a lifetime." - Elia D'Onofrio (Senior, Derby High School)
"The Valley United Way Youth Leadership program really allowed me to focus on developing my individuality. It allowed me to learn, accept, and show who I truly am as a person."
- Zach Volo (Senior, Derby High School)
"If it was not for Valley United Way, I would still have been quiet, shy and afraid to voice my opinion. Becoming a Youth Leader taught me not only to become an extraordinary leader but to reach out and help wherever I see help is needed, whether in my community or my school."
-Robert Holt ( Senior, Derby High School)

Leadership Greater Valley
Leadership Greater Valley (LGV) combines leadership skill building with community education. During the nine-week program, participants get a bird's-eye view of the issues facing the community, begin developing the leadership skills necessary to assume leadership roles and are exposed to involvement opportunities in the community. The class is limited to 15 selected individuals - those who will have the personal opportunity to learn from the leaders of many local organizations and associations. Leadership Greater Valley is unlike other programs because it provides a catalyst for community vision and change - it builds a better tomorrow for all of us.
2012 class starts in September - Click here for an application with the full schedule |
