United Way's Youth Leadership Program Begins 23rd Year
 | Youth Leaders 2012 |
|
Valley United Way has one of the oldest youth leadership programs of any United way in the country, and this past weekend the 29 members selected for this year's program began their year with a special program. Since the students come from all the Valley towns and 10 different high schools, getting to know each other becomes a priority. To help facilitate that process, they spend a team building weekend at the YMCA camp in Colebrook getting to know each other and planning for an exciting year. We'll have lots of pictures on our website later this week, but you can see who is in the program this year by clicking here.

BIC Speeds Around Orienteering Course
|
 | Steven Willett and Mark Funderbank |
As we approach the midpoint of this year's Community Corporate Cup, BIC posted an impressive win in the Orienteering Event last week while Fletcher Thompson has retained the overall lead. Click here to read more about our adventure in the woods or hereto see the overall standings.
Couch Potato to 5KThe Valley YMCA has added a great enhancement to the Cup this year in an effort to help more people move from a sedentary to an active lifestyle. Participants in this year's Corporate Cup are encouraged to take advantage of the Y's new Couch Potato to 5K Training program which is designed to help people train and then compete in the Corporate Cup 5K on June 13. This program normally carries a $25 charge, but Corporate Cup participants can join for free. For more information contact Ryan at 203-736-1435 or by e-mail at rgleason@cccymca.org

Allocations Process Begins Valley United Way's annual allocations process has begun with agencies submitting their annual budget requests in preparation for review from the volunteers who make up the Allocations Committee. Those volunteers will start meeting next week for training before they head out to visit the agencies and see the programs in action.
Following their visits and reviews of the applications, the volunteers have the difficult, but rewarding job of making recommendations to the Board of Directors. There are never enough dollars to meet all the needs, but committee members have always done an outstanding job in their work.
United Way Board Member Adrienne Cabral from Iroquois Gas Transmission is again chairing this important committee. She noted that the committee still has an opening or two for volunteers to serve. The only requirements are a willingness to serve the community and a history of being a donor to the annual campaign which funds the allocation process. Anyone interested should call United Way this week. |
