Thanksgiving, 2011

Happy Thanksgiving from Valley United Way

It's that time of year again...Thanksgiving is a time for families to gather together and share in a special dinner with grateful hearts. And, thanks to our wonderful and caring Valley companies and neighbors, many more people will be seated at their tables and give thanks.

Prudential Thanksgiving Food Drive

Our Volunteer Center has been working with several groups on holiday food drives happening all around the Valley. Just last week, Prudential Annuities held their annual Thanksgiving food drive and collected enough food and turkeys for 45 families.

Oxford's Great Oak Middle School Student Council under the leadership of Kara Ryan, Student Council Advisor/Teacher and paraprofessional Judy McGinnis, the school district donated hundreds of cans and boxes of food along with a cash donation to The Spooner House and St. Vincent DePaul.

Members of Valley United Way's Corporate Volunteer Council, CVC, have food drives throughout the year and give the food collected to The Spooner House and St. Vincent DePaul food banks. CVC companies who ran food drives this month for Thanksgiving include Basement Systems, Panache Hair Design, Newtown Savings Bank, Prudential Annuities, Freedom Disability/Alpha and CDW. Thanks to these companies hundreds of cans of food will be filling those empty shelves at the Valley food banks.

Kickoff09GroupOther companies helping with Thanksgiving are Prudential Relocation, Greco and Haines (who donated 12 fresh turkeys), Zoe Moore and "friends" and Friends of Seymour.

According to Susan Agamy, The Spooner House Director and Sandi Bailie, St. Vincent DePaul Director the food collected from Harvest House IV is gone. These new food collections will help to feed many Valley people in need.

It will be a very special Valley Thanksgiving thanks to many people who care!

THANK YOU!

Campaign Shows Promise

The holiday season is upon us and although the economy is struggling Valley United Way campaign results are flowing in! Our wonderful donors understand the needs in our community and are pledging dollars to help.

Hubbell's Team

Over the last few weeks, we have seen great results from such companies as The Hubbell Corporation whose donations increased 13% over last year thanks to Paul Rychlik and his campaign team.

Kickoff09Group

Iroquois Gas Transmission System had an unbelievable 90% staff participation rate but also increased their campaign by 10% thanks to Adrienne Cabral and her 'service oriented' campaign team.

Kickoff09GroupThe BIC Corporation and Energizer Personal Care campaigns are still winding down. Both are over the $100,000 mark!!! These companies held many exciting special events such as a miniature golf tournament, raffles, Chinese auctions, breakfasts, luncheons and even a cupcake party, to increase their campaign dollars. This 'corporate competition' continues until the final tallies are in, thanks to David Gray and his team at BIC and Jean Axtell and her team at Energizer.

Spectrum Plastics Group also had an increase in their campaign this year thanks to Sue Testone!

The Ansonia, Derby, Seymour and Shelton school systems have concluded their campaigns. We have been very fortunate that all school systems had at least one representative in each of its school buildings to assist with pledge collection and distributing information on United Way and its upcoming events. A special thank you to all of those campaign representatives for their help particularly Shelton's campaign leaders, Kathy Riddle and Sandie Zuraw who have announced they have surpassed their system wide goal of $20,000 with the aid of their Superintendent Freeman Burr and Human Resource assistant Patricia Lilling!!!

Kickoff09GroupBlumShapiro employees participated in many special events held to increase campaign dollars. A Venezuelan breakfast, an ice cream social, and their famous 'Casino Night' were all extremely successful throughout the month of November thanks to United Way committee chair, Wendy Bogle!

Fun times and great food at GE!

Vishay Intertechnologies, coordinated by Paula Scinto & Pam Boveri; Dworken, Hillman, LaMorte & Sterczala, P.C. coordinated by Jennifer Bull; GE International organized by Kristen Urso-Rio and the W.E. Bassett Company chaired by Linda McPhail, all held great campaigns and are finalizing their tallies.

In addition, some great campaigns that are in session include: the City of Shelton organized by Charlene DeFilippo, Shelton Police Department by Trish Bruder, Curtiss Ryan Honda by Jen Keever, City of Ansonia by JoLynn Flaherty, City of Derby by Laura Wabno, Webster Bank, Yankee Gas, and Venman & Co.

Valley United Way greatly appreciates our involved, committed and energetic people who give their time and talents to support the community. Colleagues are much more receptive and generous when they know key people at their workplace are dedicated to important causes. It is also vital to know that all employee contributions make an impact as they are dispersed to our 24 non-profit agencies or to a designated agency or program of the donor's choice.
