2011 Youth Leaders Selected

Valley United Way's Youth Leadership Program's 22nd year began on Thursday, March 31 with a meeting for students and parents held at Valley United Way. This year's program includes 32 students from nine different high schools in the area. The program strives to develop teens into future community leaders by educating them on the areas of need in the Valley, the importance of nonprofit agencies and the role volunteerism plays in addressing those needs.
The students first formal activity will be this weekend at a team-building retreat at Camp Jewell, a YMCA outdoor center in Colebrook. This retreat is an experience designed to bring the group together as a team for the first time. They are given a dynamic hands-on learning experience that emphasizes development in trust, leadership, confidence and communication. Throughout the year, Youth Leaders will receive additional training from corporate community members, which includes workshops in diversity, problem solving and decision making, interview skills and public speaking.Youth Leaders will also participate in various community service activities throughout the duration of the program.

Campaign is winding down
The Annual Community Fund Raising Campaign is winding down as we approach the Annual Meeting and Recognition Dinner, and Eileen Lopez-Cordone's visit with The United Illuminating Company's generous corporate donation has moved us one step closer to reaching goal. They are long time supporters of Valley United Way and several other United Ways as well. United Way President and C.O.O. Jack Walsh thanked Eileen and said "The United Illuminating Company's donation puts us within striking distance of goal, and we are putting on a final push to get there in time for the Annual Meeting". Thank you UI for being such a strong leader and supporter of the Valley!

The project will take place in September, but click here to learn what students at Emmett O'Brien Tech are doing right now to make the project another big success. |

Japan Relief
If you are interested in assisting with relief efforts for Japan, we recommend the Red Cross or United Way Worldwide's Donor Advised Giving, which is assisting the Central Community Chest of Japan. Help Promote Awareness of the Earned Income Tax Credit
Since 1975, the Earned Income Tax Credit has been offering tax relief to low and moderate income individuals and families. In recent years, CT filers claiming EITC have received an average credit of over $1,800 on their federal taxes. Once again, United Way of Connecticut is working to inform and educate families about their eligibility for EITC and other federal tax credits.
TEAM, Inc. in Derby is the local provider of this valuable service, and they have done an outstanding job of saving Valley residents thousands of dollars. You can learn more about their service by clicking here.
