Thomas to Receive Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian Award
Dominick J. Thomas, Jr.  | Prominent Valley lawyer Dominick J. Thomas Jr. has been named as the 2010 winner of the Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian award for a life time of community involvement and achievement. A Derby native, he is an attorney/owner at the law firm of Cohen & Thomas in Derby where he has practiced since 1977. You can learn more about Dominick by clicking here. United Way Announces Special Needs Grants
Valley United Way's Board of Directors recently announced over $45,000 in Special Needs grants to 14 groups providing services in the Valley. Special Needs Grants utilize dollars donated to specific areas of needs by United Way donors. This program is offered in addition to the regular allocations process which will take place later this spring.
This year's grants ranged from $600 to nearly $5,000 and covered a variety of issues ranging from early childhood to senior issues. You can find the full listing of grantees by clicking here.

Community Corporate Cup Is Underway

The 2010 Community Corporate Cup is underway with the Healthy Team pre-testing and the bowling event completed. Griffin Hospital also hosted a sellout crowd for the first Healthy Meal - breakfast. The Cup is a collaborative effort of United Way, Valley YMCA and the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce.
The signature event is the healthy team competition, but other events covered between February and June include bowling, orienteering, and horseshoes among others. Full details, registration information, stories and lots of photos are available on the website. |

Bill Purcell Named Citizen of the Year

Valley Agencies Receive $81,000 in FEMA funds The Valley will be receiving over $81,000 in Federal Emergency Food and Shelter funding under Phase 28 thanks to recent regional awards. The funds are earmarked for emergency food, shelter, and utility costs and will be administered by Area Congregations Together, American Red Cross, the Birmingham Group, Salvation Army and TEAM, Inc.Valley United Way serves as the local coordinator and represents the Valley at Regional meetings in Bridgeport and New Haven. | Valley United Way's Volunteer Center will sponsor its Annual Volunteer Recognition Awards Ceremony at John J. Sullivan's in Ansonia on April 20, and you are invited to use our on-line form to make a nomination, or print out a hard copy and fax or mail it to United Way.Click here for information. Nick Closing in on the 2,000 mile mark! |
Since our last update, Nick Tarasovic has run in a marathon and is rapidly closing in on the 2,000 mile mark in his training for the Revolution3 Cedar Point Tri-athlon later this year. Nick is accumualting miles and dollars for Valley United Way at the same time as part of his Tri-Challenge. We are accepting pledges based on the actual number of miles that Nick travels on his journey to the finish line in September. The pledge total is currently at $1,466.56 and it goes up every time that Nick runs, bikes or swims. Nick's next big event is a half marathon in Danbury on April 11. You can follow Nick - and join his support team by making a pledge - by visiting the Tri-Challenge section of our website.
