We are pleased to announce the launch of SoupBowlTickets.com, a unique site designed to help provide food for the needy in the Valley through the sale of surplus tickets to a variety of sports and cultural events. Jim Guarrera of Carey and Guarrerra Real Estate came up with the idea, and Valley United Way is pleased to help the effort which will support a variety of Valley food banks and pantries. Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian Award
Charles H. FlynnWe are now accepting nominations for the 2010 Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian Award, the Valley's oldest and most prestigious award for Community Service. Named for the late editor of the Evening Sentinel, the award has been presented annually since Alice Russ Cochran won the the first award in 1971. Fred Ortoli won the award in 2009. Nominations may be made on the United Way website. The award will be presented at the United Way's Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner in April

Community Corporate Cup
Community Corporate Cup Kicks Off on February 16
The 2010 Community Corporate Cup will kick off with a reception on February 16 at Griffin Hospital, the name sponsor for the event. The thrust of the event is to improve employee health and to build morale and community spirit at the same time. It is a collaborative effort of United Way, Valley YMCA and the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce.
The signature event is the healthy team competition, but other events covered between February and June include bowling, orienteering, and horseshoes among others. Full details will be available on the website soon, but reservations for the Kickoff are now being accepted.

Youth Leadership Program

The Youth Leadership Program is finishing up its 20th year and getting ready for a new one. Members of this year's program are presently completing their own allocations process and will be announcing grants shortly.

We will begin accepting applications for the 2010 - 2011 program shortly. The applications will be available on the Youth Leadership section of our website.

Nick Passes the 1,000 mile mark!

Nick TarasovicNick Tarasovic has passed the 1,000 mile mark in his training for the Revolution3 Cedar Point Tri-athlon later this year. Nick is accumualting miles and dollars for Valley United Way at the same time as part of his Tri-Challenge. We are accepting pledges based on the actual number of miles that Nick travels on his journey to the finish line in September. The pledge total is currently at $1,091.42 and it goes up every time that Nick runs, bikes or swims.
Nick's next big event is the Hyannis Marathon on February 28. You can follow Nick - and make a pledge - by visiting the Tri-Challenge section of our website.  

Prescription Medication Assistance Discount Card
Perscription Card
Valley United Way is working with familywize Community Service Partnership to help promote and distribute discount prescription drug cards, which can be used to help reduce the costs of medications not already covered by health insurance. These cards are free and can be obtained by contacting Valley United Way at (203) 926-9478. You can also print out a card and get a listing of participating pharmacies by clicking here. Through the end of 2009, $21,405 has been saved in the Valley!
