"WE DON'T JUST WEAR THE SHIRT, WE LIVE IT!" - Words to LIVE UNITED by. |
Our new slogan for the 2009-10 season has been proven over and over by numerous campaigns. Giving, advocating and volunteering are second nature to many. Iroquois Gas Transmission System, Fletcher Thompson, Basement Systems, BIC, Energizer and others demonstrate exactly what this means to help our community to improve their quality of life. Dress down days, Health Fairs, theme days, raffles and auctions are just a few of the ways these companies support United Way in addition to personal and corporate pledging.
Other great campaigns running at this time include: Webster Bank, R.D. Scinto, Bank of America, BlumShapiro, California Closets and Yankee Gas. And there are still many more to come! We opened November with Pitney Bowes and Stop and Shop and will continue with Vishay Americas, W.E. Bassett, Valley Post offices, Curtiss Ryan Honda, Valley Municipal offices and complete the month with The Kerite Company, The Spectrum Group, TD Bank and many of our agencies, just to name a few. CAN YOU HELP US?
Challenging economic times are making it difficult for many to donate the dollars they would normally give to United Way. By hosting a United Way campaign presentation at your place of employment, you can combine employee gifts to support multiple agencies, touching many more lives and therefore having a greater impact. This in turn can enhance employee pride, promote positive corporate publicity, and expose your employees to resources and support services to assist their families. For further information on campaign presentations and other ways to help please contact Laurel Vicidomino at laurel.vicidomino@valleyunitedway.org. |
SoupBowlTickets Coming Soon

This has been a very difficult year for food banks in the Valley even with special events such as the Griffin Hospital donation, the postal workers food drive, Harvest House III and this weekend's Scouting for Food Drive. Earlier this year, Jim Guarrera approached United Way with a novel approach to help raise new funds that would be devoted to buying food for the food banks. His concept was to ask people to donate unused tickets for sporting and cultural events that could then be sold with the proceeds used to buy more food.
We convened a group of agencies involved with food distribution in the Valley to work on the concept which Jim dubbed "soupbowltickets." We registered the web name soupbowltickets.com and set to work in developing the project.
Recently at the Gold Seal dinner, Jim announced that the Valley Board of Realtors has donated $1,000 to help get the project up and running. The website is still under development, but should be available shortly.
Watch for more information, and consider supporting the effort by donating your unused tickets or by buying tickets on the site!
UConn Tickets TonightHere's a quick test of Soupbowltickets - Jim just called with 2 tickets for tonight's NIT doubleheader at UConn. UConn is playing Colgate after Yale plays Hofstra at 7:00 pm. The tickets can be yours by being the first to call Jim at 203-305-1855. The price is $30.00.

Tri-Athlete Helps Raise Money for Valley United Way in Tri-Challenge |
Nick Tarasovic, husband of Pat Tarasovic, Director of the Volunteer Center, will be competing in the Revolution3 Cedar Point event in Sandusky, Ohio on September 12, 2010 to benefit Valley United Way. All he will have to do is swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run 26.2 more miles!
That takes dedication and motivation, and when you mix that with Nick's compassion and community spirit, you come up with the ingredients for the Tri-Challenge. That's Tri as in Try! In order to keep him motivated, we've set up the Tri-Challenge, and we're asking you to be part of Nick's support team by motivating him to train hard and support the community at the same time.
You can help Nick by making a pledge based on Nick's training mileage. He's expecting to log between 4000 and 6000 miles during the course of the training and 100% of the proceeds benefit Valley United Way. Stay tuned in the coming weeks. We will be posting more in-depth coverage on Nick, his training and how the funds he is raising is helping those in need. Click here for more information. |

We are very pleased to announce that the 2009 Leadership Greater Valley program concluded last week with a graduation reception at the new Center Stage facility in Shelton. Seventeen members participated in this year's program and they spent two months learning all about the Valley and how it operates. They started with the history of the Valley and concluded with life and leisure in the Valley. Along the way, they met and interacted with business, government, education and nonprofit leaders throughout the Valley. You can learn more by clicking here.

Farms Host Facebook Competition to Benefit Local Charities- including Valley United Way
|
Keith Bishop, of Bishop's Orchards in Guilford, and Jamie Jones, of Jones Family Farms and Winery in Shelton, have been conducting a friendly competition that will also benefit Valley United Way. They have been in a race to attract new Facebook fans, and we have been backing our local favorite Jones Family Farms! The competition will end at 8:00 am on Friday November 27th, and the two farms will donate $1 each (up to a maximum of 5,000 fans total between the two farms) to charities of their choosing. The friendly battle doesn't end there however. The second place owner will travel to the winning farm and put in a good honest days work during the Christmas season.
Jones Family Farms has selected to donate to the Valley United Way. Both farms will also donate a portion of the funds to the Working Land's Alliance.
Who's winning? Well, let's just say that we have a smile on our face at the moment. But the competition is still not over. Become a fan of the Jones Family Farms Facebook Page by clicking the image and help us help others! For the full story, click here.
