Annapolis Area Christian School Annual Golf Classic
Brings in $20,000 for Eagles' Athletic Programs
Annapolis Area Christian School's seventh annual golf classic held on May 10 at the Queenstown Harbor Golf Club drew 200 area golfers who raised more than $20,000 to help with AACS athletic programs. "This year's tournament was a great success," said Dr. John Michie, Chairperson of the golf classic and certified chiropractic sports physician and exercise physiologist . "As a new parent at the school, I am proud to be a part of something so rewarding. Through the combined efforts of the volunteers, our sponsors, and tournament participants, we raised a significant amount of money for our AACS eagles," he added. Sponsors of this year's tournament included Edison Electric, Imprinted Sportswear, Maryland Brain and Spine, Chick-fil-A, The Original Steakhouse, Pepsi, US Lawns, Power Solutions, Flynn and O'Hara Uniforms, Capitol Contracting, and the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. In addition to serving the school's programs, the tournament provided opportunities for networking, golf contests, a silent auction and awards program.
A highlight of the event included the first-ever female to win the "Hit the Cow" contest. Lynne George, AACS parent, was the recipient of a Chick-Fil-A meal every week for a year. In true team spirit, Lynne shared her prize with her foursome -- Roy Kilby, Vernon Pizzi, and Hugh Hagert in thanks for "not being as good as she is! Thanks to everyone who made the tournament a great success!

Netherlands Exchange Underway
The Netherlands students visited Washington D.C. on Monday and will continue to tour the area this week. They are staying with their host families until Saturday. AACS Students will be visiting the Netherlands in June for ten days following the Dutch visit here. Their trip will include visits to Germany, the home of Anne Frank, water-works and dykes. They will attend classes with their partners and complete an essay on the differences they experienced. Our countries have enjoyed a strong historical connection and thanks to the Fulbright Exchange Program, we have an opportunity to strengthen our relationship. It is hoped that by broadening the horizons of our students, we will connect them not only to each other but to the larger global community.

Brandon Beylo Jumpstarts His Career
Freshman Brandon Beylo has always been a sports fan. He lives, breathes, and sleeps sports ... And, now he writes about it too! Recently, he received his own by-line in The Bowie Blade, the Bowie/Crofton local paper. After contacting the paper's sports editor, and a brief mentorship, Brandon got an opportunity to write for the Bowie Blade. Brandon showed his true sports-journalism talents in covering a story about a local middle school and its Haiti fundraising effort. Brandon's story "Hoops for Haiti Event Highlights Fund raising" was published on February 11 and reports about a staff versus students' charity basketball game. Read More

Middle School
Students Present Annie Jr.

As the lights were blacked out for the final time, it had become a reality-the first middle school only drama production was done. On May 7and 8, 2010 the middle school students were in charge of the Kerr Center; everything from lights to singing and dancing were done solely by the students at the middle school. Since March, students had been preparing and spending long hours to perfect their dances and lines. Once it was over, many of the students said that it was the highlight of their middle school experience. Annie was a huge hit that drew the middle school community together. It was a good example of what the body of Christ should do- serve and work with one another, each one having its own role to play.
Bello Machre
On April 29th middle school students went out into the community in groups of 12-15 people on a variety of Service projects to share the love of God with others through service. Students worked at 20 Bello Machre Homes throughout the county doing yard work and Spring Cleaning at homes that care for individuals with developmental disabilities. One group went to the Chesapeake Children's Museum and helped a group of kindergarten students on a field trip there. Another group cleaned the grounds at a local cemetery and spent part of the day playing games with senior residents at a Sunrise Assisted Center. The students began the day with a chapel on Serving and then went out to serve. A lot of work was done and many people were blessed by the help of our MS students.

Locked-In and Sleepless!
On Friday, March 12th, more than half of the middle school journeyed to LifeTime Fitness Center in Columbia for the 5th Annual Middle School Lock-in. From 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. students played basketball, kickball, racquetball, dodge ball, and scooter soccer. They swam and went down water slides. They rock-climbed, played Rock Band, and danced. They ate pizza, drank soda and energy drinks. They did everything EXCEPT sleep! It was non-stop action the whole night through, and the students never slowed down. Thank you student council for another wonderful event!
Independent Field Study
The eighth grade History classes are enjoying the fruits of the Independent Field Study Day. On Friday, March 19, 2010, our classes divided into groups to go visit several historic sites, such as Gettysburg, Fort McHenry, or Antietam. Each group selected an historic site relevant to our course of study and prepared for their trip with several points of group accountability. They enjoyed the day in which they took prearranged guided tours, visited the sites' museums and visitors' centers, and took copious notes and pictures. We are so grateful to the many parents who acted as chaperones to these small groups. Thank you, thank you! The students presented videos and PowerPoint programs about their historic site visit in April.

Lower School Students Create a Mural for the Lobby
Artist Sue Stockman is working with lower school students on a mosaic mural that will become a piece of art displayed in the school lobby. The mural will represent a joyful expression of praise to God based on the verse from Psalm 113:3 "From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the LORD is to be praised." Students are being given an opportunity to learn about constructing the mosaic using "recycled" mosaic tiles. Stockman said her use of recycled materials provides the inspiration for the mural and is a wonderful metaphor for teaching us about environmental issues. She explained "we all have choices and actions and if we take care of things individually, then we can accomplish great things together". Each child is able to individually contribute to what will be a creative masterpiece from the work of many in the end. Ms. Stockman's week-long visit this year was made possible through proceeds from magazine sales and the lunch program.
Character Counts
Skeeter, our friend from the Bayou and close companion of Mr. Wheeler, visited us each month in chapel to introduce a new Christian character trait. Students learned the meaning of the trait along with a Bible buddy to remind them how to use this trait. We had a theme verse and poster as we tried to build godly character into our students. Lessons from the Bible showed students how people of God use this trait. At the concluding service in May, each student will be awarded a certificate stating the character trait which their teachers have seen them demonstrate this year.
Civil War Remembrance
For the six year in a row, Mark Dennis, who is Company Commander of the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery, Co. F with the North-South Skirmish Association came to share his knowledge about the Civil War. Four students were selected to serve as the Color Guard: John Youtsey, Ebenezer Hagan, Noah Mitchell, and Anthony Sita. The students were able to see supplies and weapons from both the Union and Confederate armies and learned how they were used. Mr. Dennis also showed a video of competitions in which his unit demonstrated their expertise in civil war cannon and mortar firing. Each student was given a card with details of famous Civil War battles and people signed by Mr. Dennis. It was a fascinating afternoon.
Hearts for Haiti
With the Haiti earthquake leaving such a need, the Lower School students and families decided that they would make the Baptist Haiti Mission their new Mission Project. For three weeks they collected money to send directly to this Mission. Activities included selling Heart for Haiti buttons and water bottles, chapels focused on the Haiti Mission, and making valentines for the children of Haiti. The highlight was a phone call to Haiti and saying hello to an earthquake victim who was coming to Annapolis for surgery. From generous hearts $1,390.83 was collected and many prayers were offered for those being Christ's hands and feet in Haiti.
Second Grade Sounds
The students have had many hands-on opportunities to try out different "sound systems" to learn first-hand what makes sound, and how to change the volume and pitch of the sound that is being made. As a culmination activity, the children worked in groups to design and build their own "sound systems". They were very proud of their inventions and were able to demonstrate for the class how the "sound systems" worked |
