AACS and Key School Partner and Raise More than $12,000 for Breast Cancer
In a partnership fundraising effort Annapolis Area Christian School (AACS) and The Key School raised $ 12,189 for the fight against Breast Cancer. The schools joined in a competitive basketball tournament, themed "Pink-Out", to celebrate breast cancer survivors and to donate funds to further a cure. Both boys and girls' junior varsity and varsity teams participated in the tournament and gained incredible support for the event. The tournament was held on January 29 at the Kilby Athletic Center on the AACS Upper School campus and the fundraising effort was driven by three major components: Selling tickets to the Pink Out basketball games, selling Pink Out t-shirts, and raising money via free-throw sponsorships. Fans in the bleachers showed team spirit and support of breast cancer awareness by wearing Pink Out t-shirts designed by team captains from each school that were pre-sold through the school communities. "This event truly demonstrated the hearts of our community. For two schools to come together, drawn by an idea created by an AACS alum Grace Mercer, t-shirts that were designed by current team captains, and bleachers filled to capacity by students, parents and faculty, it is a remarkable statement and a blessing for all," said AACS basketball coach and event organizer Mr. Jim Domoracki. "We are thrilled that our community could make such an impact on this great cause and we are proud to have the AAMC here in Annapolis to lead efforts for a cure," he added. Read More.

We're Working Hard to Clean Up!
Snow is pretty. Days old snow not so much. Melting days old snow even worse. We know that areas of our campus are becoming eyesores. We are working very hard to clear the remnants of our harsh winter and ready our campuses for Spring. Thank you for your patience, prayers, and understanding. |

A Community Spirit Not Broken During Tested Times
We know Spirit week as that special time when youthful exuberance is allowed full expression. Students show up out of uniform, wearing themed spirited attire, and it's OKAY. It is okay because it is all part of showing enthusiasm and AACS pride. The goal is to promote school tradition and encourage students to embrace their school as an important part of their life. However, when the February snow storms hit these more traditional plans were put on hold. Instead we witnessed an entirely different and unique spirit of the AACS community. The AACS staff pulled together, like no other, to ensure that students and faculty were safe during the blizzards of 2010. Not only was there snow to contend with, but a whole host of other issues that ensued because of the snow. Read More. Juniors Participate in Shadow Day: Precursor to the Senior Practicum - Won't You Serve As a Mentor/Host?
In preparation for this year's Junior Job Shadow Day (March 25th), AACS College and Career Services is seeking job sites who will host one or more students for half day or whole day experience. Junior Job Shadow Day is required of all AACS juniors as a precursor to their senior practicum. It is our hope that the students will be placed at a job site where they will be able to connect Christ, the classroom and careers. The Junior Job Shadow Day program provides students the opportunity to see, firsthand, how the skills learned in school relate to the workplace. While job shadowing at your business, students will want to see what a typical day on the job is like. Mentors can explain to them what their business entails, and what role their position plays within the organization. If you or someone you know is willing to serve as a host for this all important day, please contact Toye Griffin at tgriffin@aacsonline.org.
AACS Scores Maryland Christian School State Title!
It was a great way for our senior athletes to end their games at AACS. On Saturday night, February 27, the AACS Eagle's basketball team defeated Chapelgate for our first ever Maryland Christian School State Title. It was especially nice after being upset in last year's championship game. Sophomore Jourdan Stickler and George Yates were selected to the all tournament team but it was the play of junior guard and tournament MVP, Phillip Perry, that decided the game. He had 15 points, nine in the closing minutes along with four steals, two in the final minute. Philip's play along with the strong senior leadership on the team brought the season to a strong conclusion.
Sports Community Rallies to Support Team Play During Closing of Kilby Athletic Center
During the Blizzard of 2010's snow efforts and the subsequent Kilby Athletic Center closing, the AACS community knew the important thing to do was pull together and ensure minimum disruptions for our sports activities. AACS Operations Director, Jim Domoracki kept in close communication with key vendors. MS Principal Rick Slenk, and MS Athletic Director, Bob Topp, accommodated all US basketball teams in the MS gym and rearranged MS practice times to allow the Upper School girls JV team to participate their playoff games. US Athletic Director, Joe Palumbo rescheduled games and helped navigate through winter playoff season overlapping the start of spring sports season. Palumbo's handling of the situation kept many of the teams playing and practicing. The Church at Severn Run allowed AACS boys lacrosse teams to practice in their parking lot.Archbishop Spalding provides space for our wrestlers to prepare for the State Tournament and opened their gym for boys basketball varsity team to play their first round game in the Maryland Christian School Tournament on Tuesday, February 23rd. Note: We were given the green light by structural engineers to reopen the gymnasium earlier this week. |

Spring Session Student Council Officers Elected!
The Spring session of Student Council is now beginning, and they started by electing new officers. There were many close races, but the results are now in: Anna Rodrock (8th grade) was elected as president, with Ben Spooner (7th) as her VP. David Spanjaard (6th) was elected as treasurer, and Sarah Boggs (8th) was chosen as secretary (a repeat performance, as she was also Student Council secretary during her 6th grade year). Congratulations! Read More.
The Science and Math of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra
On Thursday, February 25th the sixth grade travelled to hear an educational program sponsored by the BSO. This is the first in time that the AACS Middle School students participated in a field trip to hear a symphonic orchestra perform. While many of the students admitted that classical music wasn't their thing, this was okay because there was so much more to be heard. The field trip was a great way to open students' minds to not only the cultural aspects of music, but to think broader about the scientific elements involved in the success of performing with the Orchestra and putting a full musical production together. Luke made AACS P-R-O-U-D
On February 27, 2010, seventh-grader Luke Borchelt competed for Annapolis Area Christian School in the 2010 Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee. Luke made it to the "final five" round, and was the highest placing boy in the competition, which was eventually won by last year's runner up. In an example of true Christian service, Luke was helped in his studying by last year's AACS school champion Campell Ong, who spent several volunteer hours drilling Luke on difficult German and Slavic words in the current English vernacular and coaching him on the contest. Luke is pictured here with Coach and Language Arts Teacher, Ms. Goodell. |

Lower School
See Their Faces in Your Places!
Pictured here is Mrs. Hellstern, AACS art teacher, displaying the "works-in-progress" art of AACS 5th graders. Under the great care and guidance of Mrs. Hellstern, students at the lower school continue to create one-of-a-kind masterpieces that will be gifted to the auction. Each class at the Lower School (Pre-k, too!) has taken on a special creation just for your bidding. A total of 12 pieces will be available for you to take home and adorn your wall or office with limited-edition artwork from our children. All proceeds from the auction go to the annual fund to help with technology needs on all campuses. From their hands to your homes - what better than that to show support for your school! Join us at the auction and see what your child and classmates are doing... and then, take it home. This year's Auction themed "Get Onboard the Comedy Cruise" a benefit, auction and gala features Christian Comedian Jeff Allen. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 10, 2010 at the Westin, Annapolis. All proceeds to benefit the AACS annual fund.
The Likes of Martha Washington, Elizabeth Blackwell, and Others Café it Up
Who is in this story? What does the character look like? What does the character do? What does the character say? These are just a few of the questions good readers ask themselves when they are reading a story, fiction or non-fiction. Recently, Mrs. DeRoo's class of third graders participated in a "Character Café" and the characters in the books they had been reading came to life. Each character dressed the part, spoke in first person, and told about themselves while the audience enjoyed hot chocolate and treats that related to their stories. Read More
No Shadow of A Doubt Here
There was no "shadow" of doubt that the Kindergarten classes were excited by the recent visit from author, Rebecca Irias, wife of Robert Irias, AACS Upper School Spanish teacher. Ms. Irias shared her first book, Theo's Big Scare and then the children picked her brain about the writing and illustrating process. She then gave each child the opportunity to make a shadow picture with her. Her visit left us imagining which of the children will be inspired to follow in her footsteps with a book of their own someday!

Our Faculty
Ms. Knight Mentors Student Teacher
With 24 years of teaching at Annapolis Area Christian School Mrs. Knight certainly has a thing or two to share in shaping our future teachers. Since the beginning of January, Mrs. Knight has been mentoring Mrs. Johnna King in a student teaching experience in one of AACS's first grade classes. During the 12-week program, Ms. Knight hopes Mrs. King will walk away from this experience with not only the love in her heart for teaching, but also have a solid "idea" of how she wants to run her future classroom in reaching the hearts of children. "I'm grateful to have this experience because it is important that seasoned teachers invest in our future leaders, particularly with respect to teaching the gospel and for ensuring that the basics like phonics and math facts are not lost," said Mrs. Knight. In the picture: Mrs. King shares a Bible story with the class. Read More. | |
