Even 22 inches of Snow Can't Keep AACS Doors Closed for Long....
Nolan Snow Dig OutThanks to the hard work of AACS Operations personnel, Bill Schuman, Dennis Nolan, and Patrick Ryder,  the first big snow of the school year is just a hint of a memory (okay, maybe a bit more than a hint!).  When the snow started falling late that Friday evening (December 18), staff didn't quite know the challenge ahead of them to ensure AACS facilities were going to be safe for operations, and open for Christmas services and the various sports tournaments scheduled over the holiday break.   The first sign of success happened that Monday when the Kilby Athletic Center was declared safe and ready for game play.  Finally, after 298 man hours and five days of snow blowing, shoveling, and the assistance of 3 bobcats and front end loaders, the crew called all campuses ready to go on Wednesday, December 23 at 1:00 pm. Praise God that our community was able to experience the joy of the season through the wonderful efforts of all who took part in the snow removal effort!  As we turn the corner for our coldest months yet, please be reminded that AACS follows the inclement weather procedures for Anne Arundel County schools.  Visit AACS website and link to the "closings" tab at the top of the page for more information on the AACS inclement weather procedures.   In the photo is Dennis Nolan outside of the Kilby Athletic Center with a huge effort in front of him.

 Eagles are Golden!

Gold Out

AACS community came out in gleaming gold to support the Eagles in their quest for victory over the St Mary's Saints. The Eagles enjoy a healthy rivalry with the Saints and were looking for a way to build spirit for Friday's game. The idea of making up special spirit wear started last year with the first ever "White Out" which included T-shirts imprinted with the face of our beloved Coach Scheidt's face. This year's basketball spirit drive was a "Gold Out" and featured blazing gold T- shirts with the AACS Eagle on the front and in large letters across the back shoulders "Beat St Mary's".

2nd Annual Food Drive Benefits Local Food Pantry
This past December, the Upper School hosted its second annual food drive to benefit Food Link, Inc., a local food pantry based out of Annapolis.  This project was initiated last year by the Upper School Student Council as a way for all students to participate in a hands-on Christmas service project that makes food available to those needing it most in our community. Last year, we asked students to donate 1000 items; this year, feeling our kids could do more, the Student Council expanded the goal to 1200 items. Read More.

Christmas Concerts -- Rich in Tradition and Blessings!

AACS hosted its annual concert and the sounds of Christmas filled the air. There were 670 in attendance including many visiting alumni. Our Christmas tradition has grown along with the school and has moved several times to accommodate the increasing number of attendees. In 2007 The Kerr Center for the Arts became the venue for this much loved and eagerly anticipated event. Decorated in festive greens with ribbons and twinkling lights the stage was the perfect backdrop for the choirs and musicians to entertain family and friends. Read More.

Students Helping Students of the World

Invisible Children Uganda FundraiserDuring the fall semester of 2009, the AACS Middle School united to raise money for the children of Northern Uganda.  It began with a hand full of 8th graders in Mr. Zipf's "Eyes on the World" elective where the students learned about a 23 year civil war that has ravaged the country of Uganda.  These students wanted to do something for the children affected by this war so they decided to partner with the Invisible Children organization.  Students from the Eyes on the World elective organized a chapel to inform the rest of the school about the war.  Then each grade set out to raise money to rebuild schools in Northern Uganda. Read More.

6th Graders Give a Gift of Livestock.

6th Grade Gift of LivestockIn early December, 6th grade students began talking about a Christmas project they could do together.  After viewing a video about the impact livestock gifts can have on people in impoverished nations, two classes decided to set a goal of raising $25 each to purchase a few ducks or chickens for an impoverished family.  Students were asked to use whatever amount of their own money they wished to contribute.  If they had no money, they were instructed to ask their parents if they could clean out a car or sofa and donate whatever change they found. The teachers collected the money without keeping track of how much was given. Read More.

7th graders participate in Medieval Fair
Medieval FairOne week before Thanksgiving break the 7th grade took part in the Medieval Fair which involved creating medieval projects for history class as well as a team competition.  Students were placed into different European countries which competed against each other throughout the week in academic quizzes in Math, Language Arts, Science, and Bible in an attempt to score points for their team.  Toward the end of the day, the students presented their various projects to the class which included items such as castles, stained glass windows, siege weapons, videos, and journals.  Finally, the day culminated with a mock Medieval Tournament in the gym which involved modern versions of many Medieval games and gave teams another chance to score points for their countries. Pictured here is Chris Good demonstrating his project. Read More.

A Discussion About the Customs of Other Cultures.

The second graders had the pleasure of learning more about Asia from two special speakers in December.  Mrs. Kelli Couvillion, Evan Couvillion's mother, spoke to the children about her time living in Japan.  She shared what life was like for her when she lived for a year in Japan.  She also brought in artwork, clothing, and books from Japan.  Mrs. Stevens and her two daughters, who are cousins to Kate Stevens, shared about their time in Guam.  They also brought in artwork, pictures, and clothing, and even had some food to share with the children.  The children love to learn about different cultures and to hear stories from someone who has experienced life in these cultures!  Read More.

History Teacher Makes Last Stop on USA Tour: Pearl Harbor! USA Tour Grunert
As a history teacher, Dave Grunert believes in the importance of experiencing as much of history as possible. One of his regular comments to his classes is simply - "Put this on your lifetime assignment list - something you must do sometime during your life." Perhaps the number one item on that "assignment" list is to drive through each of the states in the United States visiting noteworthy historical places.  "As a family, we drove across the United States four times to visit our children's grandparents in Oregon and British Columbia. Each time, we did our best to stop at places we hadn't previously visited," said Dave Grunert. As part of one trip, for example, they followed (as best they could in a minivan) the sites featured with the Little House on the Prairie series.Read More.

You're Never too Young (or Too Old!) to Polish Your Computer Skills

Lower School Computer TrainingAs part of a continuing partnership with Global Academics, lower school teachers attended training to learn the latest in desktop publishing.  As part of the partnership, in its 6th year, Ms. Joanne Guy offers computer training four times a year in all aspects of Microsoft Office. This particular session in January focused on integrating approaches to newsletter design.  For students, this means Mrs. Wheeler will follow-up with related projects this quarter.  They will be developing research skills, layout and design skills, using graphical tools, integrating photos and other special effects as they may relate to a particular science or history lesson.  Read More.
