And the National Merit Scholarship Goes To...
David Day scored in the top 3 percent of more than 160,000 Black Americans in consideration of the 2010 National Achievement Program when they took the 2008 PSAT. Upper School Principal, Don Wiley, awarded David with a certificate in recognition of his potential for academic success in college. Read More
Fair Play at the Kilby Athletic Center
AACS hosted the largest College Fair in its fifteen year history with more than 60 schools and 120 students in attendance. We've had a long-standing relationship and participation with schools such as Messiah and Anne Arundel Community College and were pleased to sign up this year American University, Catawba College, Lee University, Rosemont College, and St. Francis Universities who joined us for the first time. As the Fair increases in participation numbers, we are seeing colleges from even greater distances visit our school. This year, Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida earned the most distance traveled in miles. Read More
El Domingo en espaņol
On a recent Sunday night in Annapolis, AP Spanish students, Chris Berkey and Amanda Hill, attended a Spanish church service. Not only did they participate in the worship by singing and hearing testimonies of members of the congregation but they have been instrumental in teaching Sunday school to the children who attend. With this kind of desire to know God's Word, AACS students feel blessed to be a part of what God is doing in this community.
AACS Students Organize Blood Drive
AACS served our community in a simple and powerful way during our Homecoming celebration on Saturday, October 10th by sponsoring a Blood Drive. School-sponsored blood drives provide a convenient place for people to donate. As a matter of fact 80 percent of blood donations are made through Red Cross blood drives rather than at fixed donation centers. Read More

AACS seniors and staff welcomed 72 eighth grade students at the upper school on October 21. The trip was designed to help future 9th graders get a glance of Upper School student life. "I remember making the transition from 8th to 9th grade, and it can be challenging. Having a preview of classes, time with teachers and students, and getting a feel for the campus here is a neat opportunity for these students," said Cory Dennis, AACS senior and a class prefect who is involved in several activities as a high school student. Power Tools, Picnic Tables and Partnerships
On October 19th the sixth grade held their annual Service Day. This year it was a bit different from past years. Usually the 6th grade class builds tables for the AACS Middle School, but this year the 6th graders integrated their math curriculum into building picnic tables for River Valley Ranch. Students heard on the radio that River Valley Ranch had lost all their tables during a flash flood, so they proposed that they help out by donating the ones they were planning to build as part of the class. Creation Celebration On October 2nd, following a study of Genesis chapters 1-2, sixth graders took time to praise and glorify God for His Goodness in Creation by using their own creative abilities and celebrating how we are made in the image of God the Creator. Lower School
You look at them every day, but did you ever wonder who sets up those traffic cones? Allow us to introduce the Lower School Service Patrol. Members of the patrol are a select group of eight fifth grade students every quarter who have a strong desire to serve the Lord and their school community. These are individuals who represent great examples of how teamwork, good behavior and positive attitudes make great leaders in and out of the classroom. In the photo are Madison Sears and Sara Arlen. How do you squeeze a full day of learning in a half day? Ask a Kindergarten teacher!
At AACS parents of kindergartners have a choice to have their child attend a whole day program or enroll them into a half day program. Children who spend the whole day at AACS extend their morning curriculum by taking part in art, physical education, music classes and by working further on a related themed unit. Now, children in the half-day kindergarten program use the same curriculum for Language, Math, Bible and Handwriting and also take part in art, gym and music classes. Parents are able to continue their morning learning on their own through home-based experiences. Having added a new math curriculum, AACS teachers observed that children in the half-day program did not have quite enough time to fully explore the wonderful math lessons and materials that made the curriculum so great. 'Tis the Way to Be Healthy!
In an effort to communicate good health guidelines for students, Cheryl Arcigal, our school nurse, created a presentation for schools and Jen Zipf, an RN and wife of 8th grade teacher Ben Zipf, talked with the students about germs. When speaking about proper hand washing, she taught them to sing the song, Happy Birthday, two times while washing under running water. She also talked with them about the proper way to cover your sneeze and cough. As we put into practice these practical tips, we're embracing a healthier environment for our school. Read More
AP Statistics in Our Future
This fall Upper School math teacher Ms. Wanda Vega-Garcia expanded on her passion for learning and teaching mathematics. She recently attended an advanced placement conference and a work shop on advanced placement statistics. A doctoral student at the University of Maryland, Ms. Vega-Garcia is completing a degree in applied statistics and research under the Department of Education. During the conference she gained qualifications to teach AP stats, and focused on how to effectively and motivationally reach AACS soon-to-be college students. Read More | |
