Know What To Do About the Flu

Flu
A letter from Superintendent George Lawrence outlining ways to reduce the chance of the flu spreading around the school is available on the AACS website homepage.  All three campuses are working closely with the Anne Arundel County Health Department and the Maryland State Department of Education School Health Services to monitor flu conditions and to make necessary decisions. If we experience severe conditions, we will let you know of any special steps we will take to prevent the spread of flu.  For now we are providing student education at each grade level, encouraging hand washing, and keeping a clean classroom environment. Here are a few things you can do to help.

Homecoming
The AACS community came out in full force to celebrate Homecoming, October 9-10, at the Upper School. Each year, Homecoming has two primary points of focus.  For students, the weekend serves as an opportunity to celebrate the spirit and life of the school.  For alumni, they are given the chance to come home, see familiar faces, and get a first-hand look at the school they once attended.  Read More

Every Knee Will Bow
Every Knee Shall Bow
The AACS Marching Band actually began their season last April with the selection of program and music. Existing primarily as a competitive unit, the band competes in two circuits; USSBA, and Tournament of Bands (TOB).  The USSBA organization has bands from all over the nation.  The Tournament of Bands is primarily in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia and Maryland.   The bulk of the competing schools are all large public schools.

Hornton Lives through Mr. Lawrence  Lawrence and Hornton
With a grating Bronx accent, Mayze the Lazy Bird came alive in Mrs. Beall's Kindergarten class as Superintendent George Lawrence read his favorite book, Horton Hatches the Egg by Dr. Seuss. Mr. Lawrence loves reading to children and especially loves making up special voices for the various characters. He and the children both had a great time. If you'd like to have him read the story for your child, just bring in a flash drive and the lower school office can download it for you.  Read More

Blending the Stories of the Past and the Present
Grandfirends
If you have a lower school student, surely you've been asked "In the olden days did you have ....?" Because young people love to hear the stories of an older generation, because our seniors have a multitude of talents and life experiences to share, and because our young brighten the eyes and hearts of our older generation -- the lower school has recently embarked on a new program inviting seniors and retired citizens to become part of the grandfriends program.  Read More

Lower School Service Project Helps Smooth the Transition for Departing School Family
As part of their international mission project last spring, the Lower School students chose to help a school family which was relocating to the Middle East for work.  Students contributed nearly two thousand dollars (for beds for the family) through offerings during chapel and other fundraisers like candy sales and jeans day. In an email thanking the school, our missionary family said "A HUGE thank you to the kids and teachers who gave so much time and money to help establish us in this land and to smooth our children's transition."

A Live Backdrop to Learning
Sight and Sound

On Wednesday, September 23rd, the sixth grade trekked to Strasburg, PA to the Sight and Sound Millennium Theatre to take in a live performance of "In the Beginning."  The field trip was an enhancement of the sixth grade Bible curriculum, in which the students are studying Creation, the Fall, and the early lives of God's people.  In class following the field trip, students participated in an important exercise in discernment through round table discussions exploring the following question:  What parts of the show were Biblically accurate, and what parts were story-telling devices?

While School was Out: Brainfest was In!
Miller at BrainfestIt was the first day off of school for students since the beginning of the year. Just one small reprieve for teachers..... NOT!  Instead, the ranks filed through the halls. They came from the Upper School.  They came from the Lower School, and they came from the Middle School.  They came for Brainfest 2009!  Thanks to a core group of wonderful presenters -- teachers from all three AACS campuses were able to collaborate and focus on student success.  Featured in the photo is Middle School teacher, Brian Miller who presented on Powerpoint games in the classroom. David Intlekofer, the coordinator of this year's event, said that he is still hearing people talk about the workshops offered.  Read More.

The Art (chitecture) of Teaching Reading
Teaching ReadingThis summer five more AACS Lower School teachers received Architecture of Learning Training.  AoL is a method of teaching based on how the brain works.  Led by third grade teacher, Donna DeRoo, teachers worked on units of study they will use in their classrooms.  In addition, a group of Lower School teachers traveled to the beautiful mountains of North Carolina for a Foundations and Frameworks Reading Retreat.    Read More.

 Say What?
Say What?On Sept. 29, Upper School faculty members Kim Congdon, Chelsea Woody and Middle School teacher Elisabeth Stone, attended the AIMS Workshop on Ideas for Teaching Foreign Language, held at Indian Creek Upper School.  There were sessions on using facebook and other non-traditional approaches in teaching.  One of the most fascinating sessions was on sign language taught by a deaf teacher.  Without the use of sound, Allen Markel, taught the class to begin to use sign language. This was particularly useful because while most of foreign language teachers already speak two or more languages, this was a completely new approach. Read More
