How Much Does A Soldier's Vest Weigh?

Sgt. Richard Scanterbury, an instructor in the U.S. Army from Fort Dix, visited our Lower School on September 24th.   He spoke to our fifth graders about physical fitness, nutrition, and the physical demands of a soldier.  During his visit, students discovered the size and weight of a soldier's helmet, vest and pack.

 New Science Lab
Science Lab
The 1st - 5th graders have delved into science this year with a wonderful inquiry-based, hands-on program that allows students to really experience God's world firsthand.  From discovering mysterious powders and creating beautiful aquariums, to watching newborn moths hatch and tiny shrimp grow, there are lots of discoveries being made each day - And, there's always more to explore!

It was a September day in the early part of our school year when classrooms were transformed into a Caribbean Sea motif by some very creative moms.  Other moms prepared hard tack and bone soup that students later enjoyed. Read More
 
Passing On Inspiration 
Slenk ClinicOn Friday September 25, Mrs. Wenger and the middle school seventh and eighth grade choirs welcomed Erin Slenk to their classes as a guest choral clinician.  Ms. Slenk, a 2001 AACS graduate and daughter of middle school Principal, Rick Slenk, is currently a vocal music teacher at Charleston County School of the Arts in Charleston, South Carolina and directs two middle and two high school choirs.  Read More

PEACE In Our School 
PEACE 8th Grade GroupAACS 8th graders eagerly initiated the PEACE program as a chance to identify and enhance their leadership skills in special interest areas.  PEACE stands for "P"-prayer/service, "E"-environment, "A"-acceptance, "C"-community, and "E"-education.  "P" group members lead the school in building relationships with God.  Read More

SAT Scores Rise Above County Schools

Student Testing
AACS students ranked number one in writing and critical reading and number one overall compared to all 12 public high schools in Anne Arundel County, which includes Annapolis and many affluent suburbs of Baltimore and Washington, D.C.  AACS also demonstrated that 90% of our seniors participated in the SAT exams, while next in line Severna Park had a 73% participation.  Read More
 
AP and Commended National Merit Scholars In our Midst
Following a rigorous testing program, four current seniors have already been recognized by the AP College Board, with the AP Scholar Award.  Students Christopher Berkey, Mary Brunk, Alex Nieman, and Kelsye Turner, received this distinction by completing three or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher.  As well, students Christopher Berkey, Ariel Burkholder, Julia Ford, Ryan Hampton, and Alexander Nieman were commended students in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program.  Read More
 
Mentor Groups and More
Community.  Teamwork.  Enjoyment. These are the principal goals of AACS' Field Day, an annual event that took place Friday, September 18 at the Upper School.  Field Day is an event in which students participate in a variety of different activities by mentor group.  Each student at the Upper School is assigned to a mentor group, a gender-specific group (except seniors) of 12-15 kids who meet once per week to discuss issues of faith and student life.  Read More
 
Varsity Football Gives Back 
 
Football Severn Run CommunityServiceOn Saturday, September 12, Head Coach Ken Lucas and other staff took 40 varsity football players to the Church at Severn Run to do general maintenance and exterior service work.  The church hosted a large family event that evening and needed some assistance with pulling weeds, edging around the parking lot, and spreading mulch.  Read More

Mrs. Moffatt Earns Masters in Clinical Psychology
Moffatt
Cheryl Moffatt recently earned her Masters degree in Clinical Psychology from Loyola College.  This degree, along with her Masters in Special Education and 1200 internship hours, certified her as a School Psychologist.  Read More  
 
Melissa McCrory-Hatcher Receives Doctorate from University of Memphis

In August Ms. Melissa McCrory- Hatcher, AACS 10th Grade World Literature teacher, received her PhD in English from the University of Memphis. In her 2nd year at AACS, Ms. Hatcher is a published writer who has traveled to more than 20 countries.  She is pictured here at the base of Mt.
