July 2010 Summer Fitness and Self Care
|
Dear Students,
The Heat of Summer is upon us, and with the changing of the seasons, comes many new and exciting opportunities for our students at Big Toe Studio. In this newsletter, we have added and implemented educational information in formats that are quick and easy to understand. Since it is always "All about you" at Big Toe Studio, we want to help you make summer the best it can be.
Information for new ways of thinking:
- The wall of information: Includes many articles and lists of tips for better health, wellness, and weight loss.
- Pilates Terminology: a better understanding of classical PIlates
Pilates Terminology There are many different ways to teach Pilates. It seems that every time Don reads a new newsletter, magazine, or published Pilates article, there are always new versions created by numerous people, stemming from the teachings of Joesph Pilates.
While it seems reasonable that the effectiveness of Pilates can be challenged by different orthopedic issues, we strive at Big Toe Studio to provide safety first. To that end, we want our students to understand classical PIlates terminology, and be able to recognize these terms in and out of our studio. This will help you better understand your workouts in the studio, as well as apply what you are learning to your everyday life!

Clean Water and your Self Care Routine
If your are dehydrated, it is difficult to preform your average daily activities, much less the extras like your self care routine, that makes such a difference to the quality of your lifestyle. A minimum of eight 8 oz glasses of water a day can get you by, but with the summer heat and increased outdoor activity, can come the need to increase water intake.
If you are having difficulty fulfilling your daily water intake needs, try fooling your taste buds by adding a lemon, lime, or orange. Here at Big Toe Studio, we like to add a non-caffeinated tea bag to our water. You can make a big contribution to your self care and have a happier summer by simply ensuring that you meet your daily water intake goals.

Bicycling: Tips from the Pros
Bicycling is a very good form of aerobic fitness. It allows one to have the freedom of riding outside, feeling the air rush by, hearing the birds call and dodging raindrops, all while increasing aerobic fitness. It is also one of the most dangerous things you can do. Pot holes, riding without a helmet, and adverse weather and road conditions, can add up to be very dangerous. So at Big Toe Studio, we recommend a 5 point check to better guide you on your bicycle journeys.
- Although there is no substitute for measuring your tire pressure using a gauge, you can do a quick thumb check by squeezing your tire with your thumb. If it is really firm that is a good indicator that the tire pressure is solid. If it is soft and squishy, you will probably need more air. There is no substitute for using a tire gauge that will show the exact amount of pressure. Refer to the side wall of the tire to know your recommended safe amount of pressure.
- Check your brakes by pulling on the brake handles. Watch to see that brake pads appropriately compress down on the wheel rim.
- Make sure the wheel attachments are secure and make sure the wheel is not wobbly.
- Check water bottle holders, tire pumps, and saddle bags to see that they are not loose or may fall off during your ride. You do not want these items to fall into your spokes when you are descending at 30 mph down a hill that you have just climbed!
- Make sure that your handle bars and your saddle are not loose and that they are attached correctly.
