Profound Effects

In response to massage, specific physiological and chemical changes cascade throughout the body, with profound effects.  Research shows that with massage:

  • Arthritis sufferers note fewer aches and less stiffness and pain.
  • Asthmatic children show better pulmonary function and increased peak air flow.
  • High blood pressure patients demonstrate lower diastolic blood pressure, anxiety, and stress hormones.
  • Premenstrual syndrome sufferers have decreases water retention and cramping.
  • Pre-term infants have improved weight gain.
Research continues to show the enormous benefits of touch - which range from treating chronic diseases, neurological disorders, and injuries, to alleviating the tensions of modern lifestyles.  Consequently, the medical community is actively embracing bodywork, and massage is becoming an integral part of hospice care and neonatal intensive care units.  Many hospitals are also incorporating on-site massage practitioners and even spas to treat post surgery or pain patients as part of the recovery process.

Increase the Benefits with Frequent Visits
Getting a massage can do you a world of good and getting massage frequently can do even more.  This is the beauty of bodywork.  Taking part in this form of regularly scheduled self-care can play a huge part in how healthy you'll be and how youthful you'll remain with each passing year.  Budgeting time and money for bodywork at consistent intervals is truly an investment in your health.  And remember: just because massage feels like a pampering treat, doesn't mean it is any less therapeutic.  Consider massage appointments a necessary piece of your health and wellness plan, and work with your practitioner to establish a treatment schedule that best meets your needs.
The relativity of Pilates in Average Daily Activities.
By: Don Spence

The recent snow storm that left sidewalks and driveways covered in ice and think heavy snow is a stark reminder of the incredible value of a healthy spine.  Walking on icy surfaces and lifting heavy snow shovels full of wet  cement like snow requires great core strength and balance.  A single slip on an icy surface can wreck the Holidays if it ends in a serious orthopedic issue.  A damaged, irritated and strained spine can ruin a persons Holiday outings.

At Big Toe Studio, we take the safety of our students to be of great consideration long after they leave the studio to perform average daily activities.  Not only does Pilates present a lengthened, toned and defined Pilates body, it also provides a very high level of preventative healthcare.

Our students look great, move gracefully, and are great snow shovelers.  So, drink water, stay warm, and enjoy the Holidays with a wonderful strong Pilates body.

  Lobster Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients

-2 live lobsters (each 1½ pounds), or 3 pounds lobster tails
-2½ pounds russet potatoes, peeled and quartered
-Salt to taste
-1 cup whole milk, or more if needed, warmed
-6 tablespoons (¾ stick) unsalted butter, or more if needed, at room temperature
-Coarse (kosher) salt and freshly ground black -pepper, to taste
-Finely grated zest of 1 large lemon
-2 tablespoons snipped fresh chives

1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil. Holding the lobsters by the tail, plunge them head first into the boiling water (this will kill them instantly) and cover the pot. Once the water returns to a boil, cook the lobsters until they are bright red and cooked through, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove them from the pot and set them aside for 4 to 5 minutes. Then crack the lobsters and remove the meat from the tails and claws. Cut the meat into ½-inch pieces. Cover and set aside.

2. Place the potatoes in a large heavy saucepan and cover with cold water. Salt the water and bring to a boil over high heat. Then reduce the heat and simmer until tender, 20 to 25 minutes. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Shake the pan over low heat for 10 seconds to dry them out.
3. Transfer the potatoes to a large bowl, and add the milk and butter. Using a ricer, potato masher, or fork, mash the potatoes, adding extra milk and/or butter if desired.
4. Season the potatoes generously with coarse salt and black pepper, and add the lemon zest. Gently fold in the lobster meat and the chives. Fluff with a fork, and serve immediately.
