Bridge - Spinal Articulation
Big toe, Little toe, and heel flat Hamstrings and Glutes contracted Belly button to spine all the time
- Bellybutton to spine, shoulders pressed down, feet flat on the floor. **Using the modification principle, support your lower back with your hands.
- While lowering and raising your spine, focus on lengthening one vertebrae at a time. Both feet flat, contract hamstrings and glutes during this movement.
- With core engaged while bridging, be patient, breathe, and practice focusing on lengthening one vertebra at a time.
- Breathing out on the exhale, move down the spine one vertebra at a time, while pressing your shoulders and feet on to the floor.
On the next spinal articulation, prepare to hold your hips for an extended period of time. While holding, move your hips from side to side in a figure eight pattern. This figure eight movement pattern strengthens the pelvic girdle and hips. Focus on creating a smooth movement figure eight movement pattern using on your core to control the movement.

Changing of the Seasons By: Marissa Lueders
|
Once again, the changing of the seasons is upon us. As we bid farewell to Summer, it is time to embrace the season of letting go....and preparing for the beautiful fluffy white blanket of bliss that will soon enchant and entice us to float through it's heavenly sea of goodness. That's right folks, its time to gear up for hitting the slopes. Chances are, most of us have spent the Summer biking, gardening, boating, sunning, eating a few too many hot dogs, or maybe even working. All good things of course, but now it's time to get back into tip-top skiing shape. Pilates is a perfect cross-training program for winter sports! Sports specific Pilates exercises will train proper muscle balance and muscle recruitment patterns for skiing. Committing to a Sports specific Pilates program at Big Toe Studio will help decrease the risk of injury, increase performance, and help you to maintain that performance throughout the season. You can increase your optimal form and function through gaining better flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, precision, breath, and alignment. At Big Toe Studio, we will design an individualized program to suit your goals and needs for this upcoming winter season. Now is the time to get physically and mentally prepared. Get excited for your best season yet! If you are interested in a personalized private or semi-private Pilates Program for skiing, contact Marissa or Don at the studio. 970-377-0028
Avoid the common. Be unique. Stay healthy throughout the upcoming changing of the seasons. =)

Moon Beams Abound Leaves Rustle Seasons Change
I was riding at Soapstone Prairie natural area on single track with other skilled riders while climbing at a brutal pace, when I found myself peddling from the core. My shoulders were relaxed, breath ragged and uneven, but I was maintaining the pace of the leader. With every pedal stroke, I could feel my abs engaged as the pedals turned around. No back, knee or shoulder pain were present. All I had to do was rely on my core to keep me in the game. Once again, Pilates has made a huge difference in my personal athletic life.
Especially on the descents at high speed, coming into the hairpin corners I found myself relying on all of the benefits of being a Pilates student.
- Strong ligaments and tendons of primary joints
- Healthy spine
- Fantastically strong sports specific muscles
- Ability to engage core continuously during effort
- Connecting mind, body, and spirit through a healthy body
These are just a few examples of how beneficial a strong Pilates body can be when engaging in sports specific activities outside of Big Toe Studio. Stand tall, perfect posture, strong body, breathe deeply and drink more water while enjoying your Pilates body.
