December 10 Meeting Public Design Build Project Delivery
By Dick Owen, CSI
In addition to our Silent Auction and Student Scholarship presentations, Bill Kent, DBIA, LEED AP, Construction Executive with Mortenson Construction will present the University of Washington's Benjamin Hall project constructed under the Washington State Design-Build-Operate-Maintain (DBOM) program. The University of Washington utilized a DBOM delivery method to provide much needed lab and research space. The result is the Nationally acclaimed Benjamin Hall Interdisciplinary Research Building which is providing 90,000 square feet of cost effective and flexible research space that is leased out at market rate. Bill will define the process and approach used throughout the project that lead to this design build success. This is a great opportunity to learn about public DBOM and at the same time, have fun at our Silent Auction. See you then.

The focus for the December Seminars is Design-Build Project Delivery. In collaboration with the Design Build Institute of America (DBIA-NW), we have set up a series of related Tours and Seminars that show the strengths of Design/Build.
Site Tour: (1.5 AIA LUs): 12:00 - 1:30 PM. Univ. of WA's Benjamin Hall Interdisciplinary Research Building This 6-story, 90,000 square foot research/laboratory/office building provides leasable research space for physical science research in the general areas of nanotechnology, photonics, genome technology, information technology and others.
Education Seminar: (1.5 AIA LUs) 2:00 - 3:30 PM. Design Build Principles Presenters Robynne Thaxton Parkinson, President DBIA NW Region, and Bill Kent, DBIA-Mortenson Construction, will describe the structure of a design-build project, how the Owner and design-builder work together and work within their teams.
Professional Growth Seminar: (1.5 AIA LUs) 3:30 - 5:00 PM. Design-Build Risk Allocation Robynne Thaxton Parkinson, President DBIA NW Region, will focus on the risks unique in a design-build project and how those risks are allocated between Owner, design-builder and the design-build team.
CSI is a great organization! We need to understand the world of construction that is around us, and our roles in the process. CSI gives each of us a chance to share and network with those that we meet. Please join us for these Tours and Seminars.

November Events: Tours and Seminars
By Forrest Jones, CSI, Education Committee Chairman
Every month gets better and better. Garth Tait of Hartung Glass, and several of his coworkers gave us an awesome tour of their fabrication facility that is southeast of Southcenter Mall. The glass would come in a single piece that was about 12'x16' and then would go through various processes to be cut, sanded, tempered, bonded, etc., prior to being assembled into window units, glass doors, and other objects that are fabricated from glass. Automated machines were able to do much of the finishing and treating work. There were giant ovens for heat treating the glass. They had examples of finished work and design ideas that were cost effective. Garth has been a long-time member of CSI and is a good resource for all of us. For those of you that missed the tour, you really missed out.
The Seminars were equally good. BIM is here to stay and we need to get on board. "BIM Structures" was the theme and David Haynes, Director of Consulting Services, Ideate Inc. gave a very informative discussion for the Educational Seminar that covered what BIM is, and what it is not. There was information for all, as well as tips and advice for successful implementation. For the Professional Seminar, John Bund, Architect/BIM Manager at Donald King Architects gave a great presentation of a case study of one of the projects that they have been working on. Information about Standards, Templates, Information Management, Consultant Coordination, etc., at the studio level was discussed. One of the key concepts of both presentations was "Information Management" not just making a 3D model.

| Green Roof Seminar at LWTC
By Megan Boyle
It's no secret that for several years our chapter has maintained a strong relationship with Lake Washington Technical College (LWTC). David Walter, Academic Affairs Committee Chair, has continued this success with last month's chapter lunch hosted at the school.
LWTC CSI Student Club, along with Bob Mandy and Roberta Butler, hosted its first Puget Sound Chapter lunch meeting. 71 people, including professionals and students, attended this wildly successful event which included a panel discussion regarding green roofs. The educational lunch presentation can be used to gain much needed CEU credits.
The presentation included information regarding the products used to build green roofs, systems that test and monitor the roofing system for leakage by using sensors on the roof allowing for greater quality control after the initial installation. The sensors are so sensitive that they can detect pinholes in the roofing systems which can go unseen by the human eye. The installed monitoring system goes in prior to the membrane and continually monitors for leaks in the roof. Discussion on foliage available and best suited for this roofing system was presented. Additionally, a discussion on how storms can affect garden roofs, especially sequential storms, and the affect of water run-off was held.
One attendee can be quoted in saying that this was "the best, realistic representation of the capacity of a green roof to attenuate storm flow."
Academic Affairs provided student lunches through corporate sponsorships, and coordinated the presentation. Special thanks to Vanessa Aeitges of Columbia Green Techonologies, William Taylor of M.S., Environmental Science and Engineering, Duncan Townsend of Detec Systems, Mark Brumbaugh of Brumbaugh & Associates, sponsors, LWTC Student Club, and Academic Affairs. Hope to see everyone at the next one in January. |
