The Doc at about age 10 with his Mom.
 | I was blessed with a really great Mom. Barely 18, I was already a pre-med sophomore in college when my Dad died. It made sense at the time for me to stay home following the funeral to help her "take care of things" but she shipped me back after a few weeks with orders not to come home until the semester was over. And the semester after that and the semester after that and medical school, too. She stayed around until my practice was established in Newport Beach before passing on and I thought I would never have another in my life like that. It was 15 years later that I met Doris and I soon realized how wrong I had been. Doris is Doris Hoeft, JoAnn's Mom, who just turned 90 last year, and being with her for even a few moments you get a glimpse of what the pioneer women who tamed the frontier and raised the kids and stoked the home fires and fought off the locals must have been like. Born in Nova Scotia she met and married a career Navy man from North Dakota and took her two young daughters with her from Massachusetts to Hawaii to San Diego with many stops in between, often with her husband gone to sea for months at a time.
Doris and the Doc | In my mind and in my heart she flew right past "Mother-in-Law" to "my
Mom" and as you can see from the picture, we really are close and have
been so for 24 years. We are doing a few Mother's Day

Everyone knows I'm a news junkie.
The Morning Show on Fox News, the WALL STREET JOURNAL, even
the DESERT SUN provide grist for my current events mill. Lately, however, I have come to realize that
is not a healthy addiction and a sure path to hypertension and stress.
I don't know how or where I stumbled upon "Sunrise
Earth." On HDTV Channel 615 from 7 to 8
AM, Monday through Friday, Sunrise Earth is pure beauty and tracks the hour
after sunrise from such disparate places as Stonehenge, the headwaters of the
Amazon, Machu Picchu, and the rain forests of Cambodia--without
music, without voiceover, with only the sounds of nature as accompaniment.
I do know that my virtual morning travels now leave me with
an inner peace that carries over into my day, at least for a little while, and
so I'm passing it along to you in hopes that it will help you as well.
In the meantime, remember always to live, laugh, and love your skin... JoAnn
