Donor Advised Funds and Private Foundations:
John Dargan

John H. Dargan

President & CEO

Options are always a good thing, and today's philanthropists have many choices available regarding their philanthropic financial planning.  Many families have for years employed multiple vehicles for their philanthropy - often including Private Foundations, Charitable Trusts, and Donor Advised Funds.  Private Foundations and Donor Advised Funds serve as conduits between families and public charities.  Both vehicles allow a philanthropist to accelerate a charitable income tax deduction by transferring property immediately into a vehicle rather than waiting to distribute one's assets directly to a public charity.  Once the vehicle is set up, and the asset is transferred, the donor has time to choose a charity, or charities, to support.  Both vehicles also provide an opportunity for assets to grow, to fund future charitable gifts and an opportunity for the donor to involve family members in creating and achieving philanthropic objectives.  Due to the investment volatility in the markets over the last several years, some established Private Foundations may be considering an option of closing their Private Foundation and collapsing it into a Donor Advised Fund with The Spartanburg County Foundation.  By doing so, there are considerable savings to be achieved in setting up the Donor Advised Fund.  There is a greater income tax deduction; there is no 2% excise tax; there is no mandatory 5% payout requirement of net assets annually; there is no filing of annual 990s thereby eliminating all accounting and legal fees; and no administrative services requiring the hiring of staff.  The Spartanburg County Foundation is ready to be your partner in your philanthropic pursuits providing considerable annual savings on your investment assets.

You need only to call John Dargan, President & CEO of The Spartanburg County Foundation at (864) 582-0138 for further details.  The Spartanburg County Foundation values the trust and cooperation of the many component fund accounts under management, and we welcome each opportunity we are given to serve you.

Sincerely,

John H. Dargan

Memorial Fund helps to feed the HungryTeresa M. Brady

The Teresa Marie Brady Memorial Endowment Fund for food assistance through St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, officially became established on May 6, 2010 with The Spartanburg County Foundation.

Teresa was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at the age of thirteen.  According to her family, this disease affected Teresa's life well into adulthood, and helped shape her into the loving, caring, and compassionate person she was.  Teresa's family wishes to honor her giving spirit through this memorial fund.  The fund has been set up to support the food pantry for future generations.

This is just one example of how a fund opened by The Spartanburg County Foundation created a legacy for years to come. It is quick and easy to establish your own named charitable fund. Our staff will work with you, and your financial advisor if you choose, every step of the way.  Consider these factors first:

  • Determine your chartiable purpose or intent.
  • Choose the type of fund that best supports your goals.
  • Complete a simple governing document.
  • Name your fund.
  • Designate current and successor fund advisors.
  • Make an initial gift.
  • Receive a tax deduction when the fund is established and when additional contributions are made.
  • For more information about how to establish a fund, please call John Dargan, President and CEO, at 864-582-0138 or email jdargan@spcf.org

When asked, what is the secret for longevity, Betsy Teter answered, "Spartanburg wants us to succeed.  We live in a unique community that wants to preserve things that are Spartanburg, and we would not exist without the partnership, guidance and the advice of The Spartanburg County Foundation."

The Foundation has been an important partnership throughout the years.  "I went to John Dargan and said we need some help with our investment at the beginning," stated Betsy Teter.  The initial special fund was started with the help of The Foundation offering a $5,000 grant to cover operating expenses for the first year. Now, an Agency Endowment Fund, The Hub City Writer's Project Fund awards publication of books, literary education outreach, and recognition and rewards for local writers.
Agency Endowment Funds help your nonprofit organization meet both current and future needs. The Foundation handles all investment and administrative responsibilities, leaving your organization free to pursue its charitable mission.

"The bookstore is a downtown revitalization project that helps with our mission, which is to help cultivate readers," stated Besty Teter, who is the editor of the Hub City Press and original collaborator of the Hub City Writers Project vision.
