The College Hub of Spartanburg County Announces Board of Directors
 
The College Hub of Spartanburg County is pleased to announce that its Board of Directors has been formed and the bylaws have been finalized.  The Board of Directors began their work at their Board Retreat on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 to continue planning for the establishment of The College Hub of Spartanburg County which will assist our citizens in increasing their degree attainment by providing educational resources and information. In their June 30th meeting, they elected the following officers: Bill Cobb - Chairman, Clarence Batts - Vice Chairman, Benjamin Snoddy - Secretary and Susu Johnson - Treasurer. The Board consists of ten distinct individuals committed to improving the educational attainment of our citizens and creating a dynamic and educated workforce to meet the needs of the 21st century.  Their names and biographies are listed below.
 

Bill Cobb

1. William (Bill) Cobb, Chairman - CEO and Chairman of the Board, JM Smith Corporation
Mr. Cobb is a veteran of the JM Smith Corporation.  He has served since 1998 as Chairman of the Board and CEO of the corporation, a $2+ billion a year healthcare and technology company with four operating divisions.  He concurrently serves as President of QS/1, the technology division, which is the leading developer of software and technology solutions for America's pharmacies.  He has served as President of QS/1 since 1990 when that organization became a separate division of the corporation.
 
A native of Spartanburg, Mr. Cobb graduated from Dorman High School.  He earned an AS Degree in computer programming from Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, New York.  After a 3 year stint in the U.S. Army, he joined the JM Smith Corporation in 1976.  He subsequently earned a Bachelor's Degree from the University of South Carolina.
 
Mr. Cobb has been honored as a University of South Carolina Upstate Distinguished Alumnus and as Sertoman of the Year.  He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Wofford College and is a member of the Spartanburg County Commission for Higher Education and USC Upstate Foundation.  Mr. Cobb has received awards for achievements in business and citizenship.
 
He is an avid amateur musician, and plays with the Spartanburg Community Band and the Spartanburg Jazz Ensemble.  Mr. Cobb resides in Spartanburg with his wife, Linda, a master gardener and speaker.  The Cobbs have two grown children and three grandchildren.
 
Clarence Batts2. Lemia Clarence Batts, Jr. (Clarence), Vice-Chairman - Retired, BASF Corporation
Clarence Batts is recently retired from BASF Corporation after 40 years of service.  Mr. Batts' career began with the American Enka Company in Asheville, N.C. where he served in multiple positions in many departments which include: Engineering, Research and Development, Corporate Management, Plant Management, Internal Audit, Information Services, Environmental Affairs and Special Projects.
 
Mr. Batts received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from N.C. State University.  He has served on many non-profit boards in all positions including chaplain.  Mr. Batts has worked with Jaycees, United Way, Children's Home, Caring for Children, Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, Mars Hills Advisory Committee, Anderson College Board, South Carolina Chemistry Council and many community planning groups with the schools, Chamber and Workforce Investment Boards.  He was also an active team participant leading the effort to investigate and establish Magnet Schools in Asheville, N.C. 
 
Mr. Batts has been an active member at numerous churches and has served in various capacities including deacon, youth leadership and children ministry, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, adult leadership and various mission groups and other activities.  He is married to Scarlet Fowler of Inman, SC and has two children; Pamela Batts, graduate of Clemson University, and Nyla Batts, graduate of Washington University.
 
Benjamin Snoddy3. Benjamin Soddy, Secretary - Senior Pastor, Mount Moriah Baptist Church
Rev. Snoddy is the Senior Pastor of the Mount Moriah Baptist Church of Spartanburg, SC where he has served for the past 34 years.  After becoming licensed in the Gospel Ministry in 1965, he later served as interim pastor of New Trinity Baptist Church of Wellford, SC for a short period of time.  He was ordained in 1967 by the Spartanburg County Baptist Association. 
 
Rev. Snoddy is a graduate of Claflin University of Orangeburg, SC and Morehouse School of Religion at the Interdenominational Theological Center of Atlanta, GA.  He did further study in the doctoral program at McCormick Theological Seminary of Chicago, IL. His training includes Clinical Pastoral Education (four quarters) and one year of Advanced Pastoral Psychotherapy. He has served as President of the South Carolina Baptist Congress of Christian Education and as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners for Spartanburg Technical College. He has received the Order of the Palmetto and is a member of, the BB & T Advisory Board of Spartanburg, and the Executive Board of the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina, where in 2008 he was elected President.  Rev. Snoddy is married to the former Miss Sheila L. Harvin and is the father of two adult daughters, Angela and Stephanie.  He is blessed with one granddaughter, Kristen.  
 
Susu Johnson4. Susan (Susu) Phifer Johnson, Treasurer - Community Volunteer
Susu grew up in Morganton, North Carolina. She is a graduate of Converse College with a BA in English and earned her MA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Prior to coming to Spartanburg, she was an Instructor in English and Women's Studies at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, North Carolina.  
 
After coming to Spartanburg, in 1980, she served on the Safe Homes Network, Spartanburg Music Foundation Board and the Spartanburg Art Association Board. She was the first woman to chair the United Way Campaign and also the first and only woman to serve as Chair of the Board of Directors of United Way. Susu has also served Converse College in many capacities including as Chair of the Board of Trustees. She has been a long-time supporter of Girl Scouts serving on the Board during the creation of the Mountains to Midlands Council and Chairing the Emerald Circle. Susu also ran for and was elected to a seat on the Spartanburg City Council where she represented District 2.  She currently serves on the Board of Brookgreen Gardens.
She has been married for thirty years to her husband George and they have two adult children - Geordy and Susanna.
 
Ingo Angermeier5. Ingo Angermeier - President & CEO, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System
Ingo Angermeier is President and CEO of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, (SRHS) in Spartanburg, South Carolina.  SRHS has three hospitals employing 550 physicians and over 5,300 employees.  
 
Dr. Angermeier has more than 35 years' experience in healthcare with an MBA from the University of Minnesota and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of South Carolina for his research work. He has had experience in teaching hospitals and multi­specialty group practices.
He has served as Assistant Dean and full professor in two medical schools.  Aside from his work-related successes, Mr. Angermeier has published more than two dozen articles in professional journals and has lectured on various healthcare topics around the country. He has earned academic and research distinctions for outstanding publication on the subject of medical staff organization. In addition, he is the world record holder for the 50-mile lake swim.  He was born in Berlin, Germany and raised from age three in Omaha, Nebraska. 
 
 
kids skating6. William (Bill) Barnet, III - CEO, The Barnet Company and Barnet Development Company
Bill Barnet is the CEO of The Barnet Company and Barnet Development Company, as well as the former mayor of Spartanburg, SC.  Mr. Barnet received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College in 1964 and his Master of Business Administration degree from Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College in 1965.  Prior to being elected President and CEO of William Barnet & Son, Inc. in 1976, Mr. Barnet served as 1st Lieutenant, US Army and Adjutant General's Corps. 
 
Mr. Barnet has served on civic boards such as the Education Oversight Committee (Chairman), Leadership Spartanburg (Chairman), South Carolina Textile Manufacturers Association (President) and The Spartanburg County Foundation (Trustee). His current civic board involvement includes the Palmetto Business Forum, ETV Communications Endowment, Palmetto Institute and The Duke Endowment.  Mr. Barnet's current board membership also includes Duke Energy, a public entity.
 
He has received numerous honors in business development, leadership, education and civic involvement.  Mr. Barnet is married to Valerie Manatis Barnet and has three children: Mary Rebecca (22), Will (20) and John (17).
 
 
Jennifer Evins7. Jennifer Evins - Community Volunteer
Jennifer Evins was born and raised in Indianapolis Indiana, and graduated in 1988 with B.A. degree from Hanover College. After graduating from Hanover, Jennifer moved to Spartanburg for a job assignment and had a professional career in marketing and public relations.  Her last assignment was as Public Affairs Director at WSPA - TV, NewsChannel 7.  She is currently a consultant and community volunteer. 
 
Jennifer serves as one of seven Trustees of the Spartanburg County Foundation and is an appointed member of the City of Spartanburg's Public Safety Commission.  In addition, she is a member of the steering committee for Spartanburg's 40/30 Challenge to improve educational achievement in Spartanburg County, Girl Scout Troop Leader, Sunday School Teacher and Capital Campaign Manager for the new YMCA.  Previously, she served as Chairman of the Capital Campaign and Planning Committee to build the new $46 million Chapman Cultural Center.  She has served on numerous boards and committees and served the City of Spartanburg as a Human Relations Commissioner and Executive Chair of the Spartanburg Creative Energy. 
Jennifer has been married to her husband, Alex Evins, for 20 years and has two children: Emily (10) and Sam (8).
 
 
Isaac McKissick8. Isaac McKissick - Director of School and District Partnerships, Spartanburg County School  District 7
Isaac "Ike" McKissick is Director of School and District Partnerships for Spartanburg School District 7.  He is Program Director of the AmeriCorps 7 program providing volunteers an opportunity to serve as mentors and tutors while earning over $250,000 in stipends and education awards.
 
His dedication to mentorship and student achievement is driven by his experiences as the son of a teenage mother who grew up in Public Housing and the impact of mentors in his life. Mr. McKissick has extensive experience in the US Army, private business and education beginning as an Infantry Officer assigned to the 101st Airborne Division.  He has also served as an Engineer for General Dynamics and an Engineering Manager and Purchasing Agent for General Motors.
 
Mr. McKissick is a West Point graduate, who has earned advanced degrees in Engineering Management, Applied Economics and Finance, from the University of Detroit-Mercy, Detroit, Michigan.  He is enrolled in Walden University's Ph.D. program in Applied Management and Decision Sciences.  He graduated from the inaugural SC Community Economic Development Certificate Program, sponsored by Clemson University and Benedict College.  He was recognized in 2004 as a "Champion for Public Education" by the South Carolina School Boards Association.
 
 
 
Darryl Owings9. Darryl Owings - Superintendent, Spartanburg County School District 6
 
Dr. Darryl Owings has served Spartanburg County School District Six as Superintendent since 2002.  He began his career in education as a teacher and coach in 1987 at Spartanburg High School.  Dr. Owings came to District Six in 1992 as Assistant Principal at Gable Middle School.  He served as Principal at Gable Middle and Dorman High School and as Assistant to the Superintendent before being appointed Superintendent of Spartanburg County School District Six.  
 
Dr. Owings is a native of Spartanburg County.  He received the Bachelor of Arts degree in biology at Newberry College, and received Master of Education in Education Administration and Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of South Carolina.
 
Dr. Owings is serving on the Children's Service Alliance, Domestic Violence Board, and the Chamber Task Force on College Completion and has served on the Spartanburg County Higher Education Commission and a number of other boards and committees.  He established Bridge Scholars as a method of reaching and mentoring at risk boys through the Glenn Springs Academy.  His involvement in the community has allowed him to expand the District Six mission of "Children First" and provide more opportunities and resources for the district's 10,000 students. Dr. Owings is married to Nancy Price Owings; they have two sons, Will and Mark.
 
John Stockwell10. John Stockwell - Chancellor, University of South Carolina Upstate
Dr. John C. Stockwell has served as chancellor of the University of South Carolina Upstate since 1994, leading the University toward its vision as one of the leading metropolitan universities in the Southeast. Before coming to USC Upstate, Dr. Stockwell served as Provost and Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at the State University of New York-Cortland, Chair of the Department of Speech and Theatre at Indiana State University and Director of Theatre at California State University Northridge.
 
Dr. Stockwell earned his Ph.D. and Master's degrees in theatre at Bowling Green State University and his Bachelor's degree from Cedarville College.  He is also an alumnus of the Harvard University Institute for Educational Management.
 
He is the founding chair of Spartanburg's chapter of the Urban League of the Upstate and currently serves on the Board of the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce, where he was Chairman in 2009.  He serves also on the boards of the Arts Partnership, the Spartanburg Community Indicators Project and others.  John and his wife, Dr. Diane Vecchio, a professor of history at Furman University, have four grown children and two grandchildren.
