However, our 4 Paws Pantry, our pet food assistance program, is always accepting pet food donations which can be dropped off at either our shelter or furniture thrift store.

Girl's ingenuity nets donations for HSOY

A week or so ago, we received the following letter accompanied by a $50 donation. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Disclaimer: The Humane Society of Yuma does not condone children going door-to-door without adult supervision.

Not too long ago, one afternoon, in my grandparents' neighborhood I asked the friendly neighbors to contribute money for the animal shelter in Yuma! My Grandpa was watching T.V. and my Grandma was working at school.

And I saw an advertisement about the Yuma Humane Society on the television, and I figured I should go help the animals get food and water! I just decided to gather some money to help!

I asked my Grandpa, "Grandpa may I go around some of the neighbors and ask if they would like to help the animal shelter?" He must have thought I would be asking for money! He got up from his chair to get a piece of paper and an envelope for me.  Grandpa said, "Write money on the envelope, get their names and phone numbers and ho have fun!"

I was a little nervous even though I had walked around the entire circle with my Grandma before.  I went with her to get money for the Heart Association.  It seems like she is always asking someone for money to give away.  Each person asked me why I was asking for money and I explained that I was sad to see so many animals on the street near my house not having anyone care for them.

I was gone about two hours to go around the circle.  My Grandpa was still watching T.V.! By the time I got home my Grandma was pretty nervous and started driving up the street to find me.  My brother, Keaghan, had come and gotten on his bike.  He came to find me and be with me while I knocked on the doors. Its a good thing!

I had to explain everything to Grandma! When she saw the money, heard the story, and knew I was fine she hugged me and told me she was delighted, proud, nervous, and a little unhappy with my Grandpa! She was truly amazed at my accomplishment!

It is true I did walk the walk, but the advertisement on the T.V. for the Humane Society gave me a spark of inspiration! The nice neighbors, in the Hettema Circle, were the ones that made the difference.  They gave the money for the animals because it was needed.  Maybe they liked the way I asked too!

I've learned some things about gathering money.  Next time, I will not go alone, I will let everyone know now where I am going, and I will make certain I write the letter and send the money really quick! I am glad to give youthe names of the people, the amount of money given and have this done! My Grandma will be happy too.  In fact, I think she is going to give me some more money!!!

Oh, when my parents discovered my afternoon adventure, they looked at me and said, "Oh my gosh!" I am not sure what that means , but I decided to wait and ask at another time!

FEATURED PET
Spike
Spike
We're sending out the Big Boy to send the message, "Adopt a cat today!!" Please meet our Spokescat Spike. Spike is a big, lovable, squishy, playful, all around great, calm and  cool cat and has the purring motor of a Hemi big block engine! This cat is sweet, is three years old, has been neutered and all the good stuff, shots and all. Spike was left with us on July 16th, his family moved away and left him in our care to hopefully find him a new home. Spike is one of the faves, because he is so easy going he would fit into any home. He loves kids, cats and even dogs, "he's just purr-fect!" and he even has a cool little goatee on his chinny chin chin!! Spike is one of many Lonely Heart cats we have here for adoption, so now's he time....come down and save a cat or two for only an adoption fee of $25.00! If your looking for that special kinda furry love please visit Humane Society of Yuma and adopt yourself a best friend today!!
FEATURED PET
Coca
Coca

"Did someone say fetch?!" That's probably what Coca would say if dogs could speak (at a frequency our ears could hear). Coca is full of love, life and energy. He is Jack Russell terrier and, despite being six years old, has the heart of a puppy when it comes to play. Coca is all set to find a place to call home. He's neutered, microchipped and has all of his shots. Coca's family left him here at our shelter because of personal issues. They were just unable to care for him any longer. Coca is always wagging his tail and has become a great friend of ours and has been staying with us since September 9th. Because Coca has been here for quite a while, he has now joined our Lonely Hearts Club, so his adoption fee is only $55.00. We really hope this helps him find his fur-ever family. Coca gets along well with dogs, he knows sit, and he walks super on a leash. The best thing about Coca is that he loves fetch, he'd be the perfect pet for active families, and he would give you unlimited hours of fun and laughs. Coca is one happy little dog and we want to see him find a new family so please adopt this super-duper fetcher of a dog today!!
STAFF PICK
Kay and Maliblue
Kay

This week's staff pick is Kay, one of our adoption counselors, and Maliblue snuggled in her arms. Maliblue is a three month old male blue and white brindle pit bull puppy. He was rescued off the streets by one of our officers and is very loveable, playful, and sweet. Which sounds just like Kay. Kay started volunteering with us in February and recently got hired full time in June. Kay has a great heart for all our animals, her specialty is grooming up our little ones that need a little help getting all dolled up. Kay has been grooming many critters over the past twenty years and takes great pleasure in helping them.

"When the animals are clean they feel good, look good and their whole attitude changes, they become an all-around happy camper!" says Kay. "Adopt Maliblue today. He's feeling fresh and waiting to move into someone's heart and home!"

A big thank you to Kay for all of her tender loving care for our animals and beautifying and handsomifying them to help them find forever, loving homes.
