Due to Fur Ball V this Saturday evening, the Humane Society of Yuma will be closing one hour earlier at 4pm, rather than 5pm.  Hopefully this doesn't cause anyone too much inconvenience.

Fur Ball V has sold out
Fur Ball V

If you don't have tickets to Fur Ball V, all we can say is that you need to buy them early next year.  Don't bother searching for them on eBay either. No one would miss this event.

FROM THE DESK OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Hello everyone,

Thanks for reading this newsletter every week.  It's a great way to keep everyone up to date on the many things happening at our organization.

We've come a long way in the last few years, but we still have a long way to go in accomplishing our goals.  I would like to engage you in helping us make our, your, Humane Society a better organization.  You know our mission, and I think you know our vision; to never euthanize an adoptable pet.  Of course, we also want to get to a point where every feral cat is part of a managed colony.

In addressing our pet overpopulation crisis, we need to make greater strides in reducing the number of unwanted pets in Yuma.  We have our low cost spay/neuter program, and we're making progress on that front.  We also have our very successful rescue program which sends pets to rescue groups outside of Yuma for adoption.  But we're still facing a very difficult battle of too many pets with too few homes.  We have got to turn the tide on this problem and prevent the birth of the thousands of litters born into our community each and every year!   We're taking too many pets into our shelter.  As we reach our saturation point, and our kennels are at capacity, our foster homes are full, and our out of town rescue groups are stretched to their limit, pets continue to come into our shelter.  We need help!  Let me rephrase that statement; they need our help!  Give us your ideas.  Every idea is worth considering. Please, we have to change an uncertain future for innocent lives into a known future of a forever home.

We're also soliciting ideas for our frequently asked questions (FAQ's) page on our website.  Respond to this email with suggestions as to what questions (and answers) we should put on the page.

Thanks all of you for your help,

Shawn

TUXEDO TUESDAYS

Tuxedo Tuesday's are back MEEOOOWW!!

Sometimes, cats and dogs wearing black and white coats in one combination or another (whether all black, all white or anywhere in between) have a harder time getting adopted than other color schemes. Well, not this September, because it's Tuxedo Tuesdays all month long! We're getting our tuxedos on for Fur Ball V (September 17th) and all cats and dogs donned in any combination of black and white will be 50% off

The reduced fees are as follows: cats, $23; kittens, $28; dogs, $38; puppies, $45.  All adoptions include the animal's spay or neuter and rabies vaccination and a five pound starter bag of Hill's Science Diet.  Dog adoptions also include parvo, distemper, and bordatella vaccinations and microchipping. Cats at our PetSmart adoption center have been tested for FIV and feline leukemia. Cats can be microchipped for an additional $5.

Paul Bensel's Golden Contributions
Paul Bensel of Bensel Jewelers has been contributing his valuable craftsmanship to the New Shelter Project for years.  In 2008, he allowed the New Shelter Project to sell donated jewelry out of his own store for well over a month.  Last year, he fashioned a unique pendant that was auctioned off at Fur Ball IV.  This year, Paul has redoubled his contribution with handcrafting two of the evening's live auction items.
Paul Bensel
Paul Bensel works on a pendant he crafted for Fur Ball IV. Paul's mastery returns twofold at Fur Ball V.

The first item is extraordinarily original. It is a diamond and gemstone ring made of 14k gold with a large Madeira Citrine stone mounted in a floating setting.  The stone moves with the ring giving a beauty that is rarely seen even in upscale jewelry.

The second item is a gold bar that Paul melted down from donations of gold that were made to the New Shelter Project last year.  With the donated gold and diamonds, Bensel fashioned a stunning golden bar studded with diamonds down the bar in a floral design.

To see pictures of these two pieces, read the listing of the live auction items below.

The New Shelter Project is forever indebted to Paul's contribution to the cause of building a new home for Yuma's pets in need.
Oh, sweet successes!

Just over a week ago,  we put out a call for success stories to fill a slideshow to be played throughout the evening of Fur Ball V.  The response was incredible and we thank you so much for sharing your family's successes with us.  It is truly what keeps us going.

Lola-rita

Lola-rita (Little Big Dog) loves her forever home. I hope I didn't overdo it with the pics of my pup. I'm enjoying the pictures of everyone's sweet babies too. Thanks to the Humane Society of Yuma for all you do for the 4-legged friends in our community.

Tabby & Fay

Tabby, joined our family at the end of April in 2010. From his papers we were his third, but definitely forever, family at a young age of about 7 months.

Tabby

And Fay, a little missy to complete the pack of two guys, came to us in November 2010 from Petsmart. She's a feisty little lady that fits in great with Tabby bellow, and probably the smartest cat I've ever met, Bell - who we got/caught as a stray in February, 2010.
