FROM THE DESK OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Thanks to the 4 Paws Pantry
Happy September everyone, Where did August go? It seems as if we never have enough time to tackle all of the tasks set before us. Oh well, all we can do is take one day at a time, and slowly chip away at the problems at hand. Speaking of problems and chipping away towards a solution, I want to mention our 4 Paws Pantry. Over a year ago, a couple of volunteers came to us wanting to start a program giving dog and cat food to owners who fell on hard economic times. We knew of similar programs and thought this was a fantastic idea. We had one condition; with our undermanned staffing levels, I could not commit any of my staff to offer assistance to facilitate the program. It would have to be ran 100% with volunteers. To make a long story short, since these ladies started the program they have collected and given away tons, and I mean thousands and thousands of pounds, of dog and cat food! This is great that hungry pets are being fed, but one of the conditions to become eligible to receive food is you must agree to have your pet spayed or neutered. So, the Four-Paws Pantry volunteers are directly responsible for having dozens upon dozens of animals fixed so they cannot add to our tragic pet overpopulation. This is just a quick thank-you for the ladies who run this program. By the way, the program is operated 100% by volunteers! The Pantry's greatest need is cat food, both dry and wet, although there is always a need for both dog and cat food. You can drop off your pet food donation at either our shelter or our thrift store (on the corner of 4th Avenue and 24th Street behind Audio Einstein's). If you are in need of the Pantry's assistance, you can find out more and apply online
Thanks again for helping the thousands of animals that come into our care. I hope you had a fun Labor Day. Shawn |

TUXEDO TUESDAYS Astro says, "Let's get this party started"
 | | Help us spread the word about Tuxedo Tuesdays! Print out the flier and post around. |
We kicked off Tuxedo Tuesday this week with an announcement from Astro on Facebook. Sometimes, cats and dogs wearing black and white coats in one combination or another (whether all black, all white or anywhere in between) have a harder time getting adopted than other color schemes. Well, not this September, because it's Tuxedo Tuesdays all month long! We're getting our tuxedos on for Fur Ball V (September 17th) and all cats and dogs donned in any combination of black and white will be 50% off! The reduced fees are as follows: cats, $23; kittens, $28; dogs, $38; puppies, $45. All adoptions include the animal's spay or neuter and rabies vaccination and a five pound starter bag of Hill's Science Diet. Dog adoptions also include parvo, distemper, and bordatella vaccinations and microchipping. Cats at our PetSmart adoption center have been tested for FIV and feline leukemia. Cats can be microchipped for an additional $5.

VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION "Overflow" volunteer orientation held tomorrow
Thanks to a great write-up last week in the Yuma Sun on our quarterly volunteer orientation held last week, we had more wannabe volunteers than we could properly indoctrinate in one orientation. Because we want to convert as many wannabe volunteers into certified and practicing volunteers as possible, we are holding an overflow orientation tomorrow (Thursday, September 8) at the Main Library. Even if you weren't among the throngs that were turned away last week, we encourage you to attend.
We'd like to thank the following individuals who became the most recent fully certified HSOY volunteers after completing both Last Thursday's orientation and Saturday's dog handling class.

MEDIA STAR Laura's all Chihuahua
This fun-sized little lady is Laura and she's all Chihuahua. Laura was picked up with her two babies running scared in the streets, all three covered in fleas. Her puppies have, incidentally, both found their forever families but mom is still here waiting for hers. She's three yearsold and loves being close to someone. So here's your chance to change to world for this little lady and show her a taste of the good life.

THANK YOU Donation remembers Leland E. "Bud" Cook

A donation in the amount of $1,200 was presented to the Humane Society of Yuma on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. The donation was made from the Leland E. "Bud" Cook Trust. Bud's son, John F. Cook, DMD, daughter, Dixie Lee Larzalere and grandchildren have been residents of the Yuma area for many years. Bud was also a winter visitor to the Yuma area.
Bud had a lifelong love for animals. As a teen, he was featured in Reader's Digest Magazine after hatching ducklings he kept warm in his jacket while herding sheep during the summer months in Southern Utah. The ducks became his beloved pets; and later in life his dogs and horses were his greatest companions.
Bud passed away October 5, 2010 due to pancreatic cancer in Apple Valley, Utah, and left this donation in his trust to the Humane Society. The HSOY is very appreciative to have friends like Bud. It's because of the thoughtfulness of individuals like Bud, that we are able to continue providing the best possible care for our four-legged friends.

Rover the Rainbow
Rover is just adorable. He is a five to six month old Shepherd-mix puppy. Rover has got some features of a hound or rottweiler in him and he weighs about 40 lbs. Remember, he's just a puppy so he may end up being a pretty big boy. Rover was found wandering around at an elementary school here in Yuma, AZ. Rover has been neutered, and microchipped. He is current with his vaccines as well as his rabies vaccination, so all he needs now is that special family to take him home. Rover is a lover, very smart for a young dog and super playful. Rover is just a good boy all around and he would make a perfect best friend.
