Help us spread the word about our 50% off all adoptions for the rest of August. Print out the flier and post around.

The Humane Society of Yuma has had a grueling summer so far when it comes to the number of pets arriving at its shelter. 2683 cats and dogs entered  HSOY's shelter over the past three months compared to 2,316 pets last year during the same time period, an increase of 18%.  Consequently, the number of pets euthanized have also risen from 1,560 from May to July of 2010 to 1,708 in 2011, an increase of 9%.

"While we've had some huge successes with the numbers going to rescue, and the number of adoptions we've had through our new PetSmart adoption center, it's just not enough to offset the numbers of intakes we've seen."  said HSOY Kennel Manager Dennis Owen.

In hopes of dramatically increasing the number of adoptions and thereby the number of euthanasias, HSOY  is reducing all adoption fees at both its shelter and PetSmart adoption center by 50% for the rest of the month.

The reduced fees are as follows; cats, $23; kittens, $28; dogs, $38; puppies, $45.  All adoptions include the animal's spay or neuter and rabies vaccination and a five lb. starter bag of Hill's Science Diet.  Dog adoptions also include parvo, distemper and bordatella vaccinations and microchipping. Cats at our PetSmart adoption center have been tested for FIV and feline leukemia. Cats can be microchipped for an additional $5.

Letter from the Executive Director

Hello again,

The weeks seem to fly by and it's time to write another note for E-Paws.

The shelter was busy as usual, and our patrol staff is out there doing a great job bringing in lost and homeless dogs.  I have to give a quick "shout-out" to one of our staff members that we don't hear much about.  Nora Hernandez is our patrol dispatcher that has been with our organization for a several years.  She doesn't get to leave her desk very often, and she's a real behind the scenes player.  But we know she's there doing a great job representing our organization and keeping the public connected with our patrol staff.  Keep up the good work Nora, and keep that warm smile you share with us every day.

For a little humor, I want to share a quick story with you.  We took a ferret into our shelter a couple of weeks ago, and it just so happened one of our ferrets at home passed away last month.  When I saw this little white fur-ball, who looks nearly identical to our ferret Sugar, I thought she would fit right into our clan of three ferrets, so I decided to give her a home in the Smith house.  At that point, I was trying to figure out how I could mess with my wife Patti by sneaking this new one into our house and pass her off as our ferret Sugar.  I went home, let the ferrets out of their ferret house while Patti was sitting at our bar.  I snuck the new ferret in, handed her to Patti and walked away.

Patti commented how Sugar's coat felt a little rough, and that she had some dirt on her head (keep in mind, I actually handed her the new ferret, and the dirt Patti was referring to are dark spots on the new ferrets fur).  So, Patti holds the new ferret for a short time, and then walks into the living room to let Sugar (so she thinks), join the other ferrets playing on the carpet.  Patti sets the new ferret down, sees the real Sugar, lets out a genuine scream; is confused; and looks at me with a very funny face!  She figures it out pretty quickly and starts to laugh.  She then begins to tell me how she knew there was something different about the ferret I handed her.  So, that was my entertainment for the week.  I hope you had a few good laughs lately.  It sure does is good for our health!

By the way, our Annual Fur Ball is only a month away, so get your best dress or tuxedo out and get ready to have a great time.  Remember, the proceeds go to help build our new shelter.

I hope you have a great week and are able to keep cool.  Thanks again for all that you do for the shelter.

Shawn

Bazel

Bazel

Bazel is a cute little fellow! Bazel is about four months old and is a small terrier-blend. Bazel was found by a concerned citizen and brought to our shelter and no family has ever come in looking for him. So we are going to try our best to find him a new home. Which should be no problem seeing as how Bazel is impossible to not fall in love with. Bazel has a cute little button nose, with a great personality, he likes to play with other dog's and it just the happiest, most gentle little dog you may ever meet. Bazel has been neutered, micro chipped, he is current with his rabies vaccine and has started his first series of puppy shots. So if your thinking about getting a new pet, our shelter is the best place to go every animal here all really need families and forever homes.
