Letter from the Executive Director

Hello again,

I hope all of you had a great week.  It sure is hot out there, but the summer is almost over, and the extreme heat is a small price to pay for the wonderful weather we enjoy for the majority of the year here in Yuma.  A quick note for all of us; school is back in session so please watch the children in the crosswalks and around the schools.

I hope some of you are able to listen to our new radio show.  It's on every other Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to  1200 on KBLU, AM 560.  Our next show is this Saturday.  The focus of the show is pet care advice.  If you have any topics you would like to have us discuss, please let us know and we can talk about it during one of the shows.  I'm hosting this week along with Cookie Wagter.

Last week, we held our annual strategy meeting with the management team.   We've got some lofty goals for the year with a great deal of emphasis on education.  We started a Be-Humane education program in some of the schools last spring and we really want to formalize this program and make it a major part of what we do.

We all know animal welfare education at an early age will pay generational dividends.  The students are very receptive to the classes, and our staff truly enjoy getting into the schools to teach these eager learners.  We're still in the process of compiling all of our notes from the strategy meeting, but I'll get some more of our major goals out to you next week.

By the way, city council elections are just around the corner.  Make your vote count and choose wisely.  We've been fortunate to have Cody Beeson and Leslie McClendon give the Humane Society wonderful support in the past.  We wish then the very best.

Enjoy the rest of the week, and have a great weekend,

Shawn

Long-time HSOY supporters featured in Good Housekeeping magazine
Marty and Wendy Beckers were recently featured in Good Housekeeping for their accomplishment in losing a combined 231 lbs. and keeping it off.

In 2009, the Beckers donated the $1,000 they received for winning Yuma's Fattest to Fittest contest.

In the Good Housekeeping article, the Beckers cite the Jenny Craig diet, exercise, and going vegan as the keys to their wait loss.  "Now we feel we're doing everything we can for our health and to help the environment," the magazine quotes Marty.

As for exercise part, they hike regularly with their dogs - whom they adopted from the Humane Society of Yuma.

This Brussels sprout is sweet, sweet, sweet

Brussels Sprout

Who could be cuter than this little sprout? Meet Brussels Sprout, a one and a half year old Jack Russell Terrier blend. Brussels Sprout was brought in by a citizen who found him running amuck in a pretty busy part of town. Lucky for him, he wasn't injured. Unlucky for him, no family has come in to look for him. This adorable, puppy-looking, wired-hair pooch has been neutered, micro chipped, and has current vaccines including his rabies vaccination. Since Brussels Sprout has been here, he has been nothing but sweet and filled with silliness. He is super playful and would be perfect for a familiy. So if you're looking for a little fun in life, please come to our shelter and adopt a Brussels Sprout today, he will definitely keep you smiling and happy!!
