Girlfriend and Rochester find golden homes to live out their golden years

In the aftermath of last month's shootings, six dogs took shelter at HSOY following the untimely deaths of their human companions. Four of the six were either reclaimed by family members or adopted but, as of last week, two remained. Girlfriend (left) and Rochester (left) and Girlfriend (right) are both very lazy but very happy senior dogs who just wanted to find a place to live out their golden years in a home where they could love and be loved. But, having been here for nearly two months already, time was becoming an issue.
So our capital campaign coordinator, Molly Bowes, spearheaded an effort to get their happy faces and sad stories on camera and in print. Molly got a camera crew from KYMA to come out to the shelter on Thursday to do a piece that ran on the evening news broadcasts. The Yuma Sun put their story and pictures on the front page of Friday's edition. Later that same day, both were adopted by a gentlemen who had adopted older dogs from us in the past and had plenty of land and love to give them.
Thank you to Molly, KYMA, and the Yuma Sun for finding Rochester and Girlfriend their loving, forever home.

First "Be Humane" summer camp held.

The first Be Humane Camp took place this week, with 15 campers attending the quickly sold out camp. This week's younger group of campers learned about the importance of caring for our animal companions, which included discussion of medical care, costs and what animal abuse is, as well as the discussions that families should have before taking on a 8-18 year commitment with a new pet. Shelter dogs Venus, Cindy and Mark visited with the campers during the week and helped everyone think about topics like energy levels, breeds, age and spaying and neutering when adopting a pet. "The whole family also needs to meet the pet first," said Joey, while Brook added, "you're house has to be big enough for the pet you get." Camp finished today with a visit to the shelter to share the campers' homemade dog treats with Yuma's homeless cats and dogs.
