HSOY selected as one of fifty finalists in $70,000 pet supplies contest
Last week, we asked our Facebook followers to nominate us for a $70,000 pet supplies contest by liking Dr. Marty Becker's Facebook page and posting their nomination on his wall.
The contest received more than 13,000 nominations, and 50 finalists have been selected at random from among them, and will go on to the voting round. And, HSOY was one of the 50!
As part of the BIG Bus Tour celebrating the release of Your Dog: The Owner's Manual, Dr. Marty Becker is giving away pet care products, supplies and equipment valued at more than $70,000 to shelters and rescue groups across the country, all donated by leading pet and veterinary product manufacturers.

HSOY starts "Adopt a Cat Month" early

The Humane Society of Yuma, along with American Humane Association and hundreds of shelters across the nation, recognizes June as Adopt-a-Cat month. June is the height of kitten season, a time of year when warm weather coincides with female cats' heat cycles to create a kitten population explosion.
Every June for the past several years, the Humane Society of Yuma has celebrated Adopt-a-Cat month with a special promotion that offers two cat adoptions for the price of one. This year, however, the Humane Society of Yuma has decided to begin celebrating early due to an influx of both kittens and adult cats.
Beginning immediately, cat lovers can adopt two cats for the price of one. Additionally, single cat adoptions are 50% off. This offer is good at both the PetSmart adoption center.

HSOY receives YCF grant

The Yuma Community Foundation has announced the award of two grants totaling $32,000 to the Humane Society of Yuma. These grants will be used to provide mico-chip pet identification and low-cost spay and neutering services. The grants are an acknowledgement of the HSOY's valuable contribution to the region, according to Judy Gresser, regional manager of the Yuma Community Foundation.
"With this grant, the YCF and donors to the Fund for Animal Welfare in Yuma County express their confidence in HSOY," said Gresser. "We thank the organization, its staff, and their volunteers for their tireless efforts on behalf of needy animals."
Among the direct services that the HSOY provides for animals in the region are: spaying and neutering to reduce the number of homeless animals, vaccinations, microchips for identification of lost pets, shelter, food, veterinary care, and re-homing through adoption. The grants were made possible by the generosity of donors to The Fund for Animal Welfare in Yuma County, an endowment fund that provides support for humane services to animals. Donations to the Fund are invested and the proceeds are distributed as grants to eligible nonprofit organizations that provide direct services to animals. These grants are awarded at the discretion of the YCF Board. Because donations to the endowment fund are never distributed, they go on working for the donor's intended purpose, forever.
Anyone who wishes to support The Fund for Animal Welfare in Yuma County with a donation to help needy animals can contact the YCF at 928-539-5343. Donations of any size are welcomed.

Adoption Success Story: Becky

Dear Linda,
My wife and I adopted a six month old female terrier named Becky from the Humane Society of Yuma about a month ago. I was informed the humane society would like to receive future pictures of Becky and the family she is with. I will attach a few pictures I have already and will be send more later. Becky is doing great, she has adjusted really quickly and seemes to be loving her new home. We have fallen in love with her and could not imagine our lives without her. I hope you enjoy the pictures and you can find joy that, thanks to the services you have provided, she now has a loving family and a happy, loving forever home.
Respectfully,
Uwe Esser

Thrift store items of the week

The larger, square radio is a 'Crosley'. It is a radio, CD player, cassette deck and a turntable. All work, but the turntable Everything except the turntable works. We think it's possible that the turntable just needs a new 'belt'. It retails on the internet for up to $270.00, and we have it listed for $65.00.
The smaller, oval-shaped radio is a Norman Rockwell, collector's edition radio. It is a 'Thomas' (brand) and is a numbered edition. It is a combination radio and cassette deck. Both work and we have it priced at $75.00.

Daisy

Daisy has been with us here at our shelter since March 31st. Everyone here just loves Daisy and Daisy loves everyone back! Daisy is a spaniel mix. She's around four years old and is just as sweet as can be.
Daisy walks well on a leash, is mellow, but is always happy and wiggling her tail. Daisy is also a love bug and just loves being in the arms of a certain someone - you! Daisy would make a perfect companion and an even more grateful friend for saving her.
Daisy is a good girl and she has now joined our Lonely Heart's Club so her adoption fee is only $65. Such a small price to pay for a lifetime of love. So please come meet with Daisy, she would be more than happy to visit and give you love and kisses!
