HSOY benefits from Girl Scout cookie sales
Every year it happens and you see it everywhere. Girls enthusiastically walking through neighborhood after neighborhood offering those scrumptious cookies that everyone has grown to love since their parents and grandparents were just kids. Why it's Girl Scout Cookie Selling Season!
But before all of that selling can begin, careful planning goes into what the troop and individual Girl Scouts goal will be for sales. The Sierra Vista Scouting Girl Scout Junior Troop #8054 has some very ambitious girls, with 4 of them ranking as the top sellers for the Girl Scout Council of Southern Arizona. Yuma has been very generous this year supporting our scouts and their annual fundraiser and the proceeds from our cookie sales exceeded our goals.
Leadership and community service are two important qualities that Girl Scouts teach and the Junior Girl Scouts of Troop #8054 decided back in January, even before cookie selling season started, that they wanted to give back to the local Yuma community. Collectively the girls chose one local organization to donate a portion of their proceeds to. The troop selected the Humane Society of Yuma as the recipient. The girls felt very strongly about being able to help the homeless animals of Yuma County.
So after all the cookies were sold and the cookie mobiles stored away, the scouts are proud to present a check in the amount of $500 to HSOY. Troop #8054 is excited to give back to the community that supports them in so many ways!

Be Humane visits Valley Horizon
(from Yuma Sun, published on May 7)
Valley Horizon Elementary School let the fur fly with presentations by the Humane Society of Yuma as part of the organization's Be Humane campaign to teach students about being kind to animals.
The visits fit in with Be Kind to Animals Week, which takes place in the first week of May.
According to Erin Sitera, director of development at the Humane Society of Yuma, each of the kids was given a form and was asked to each raise at least $15 for a new shelter.
If the money was raised, the child would receive a Be Humane shirt, Sitera said. All week long, staff taught the kids on the importance of being humane to each other and animals, Sitera said.

Federal employees: HSOY in CFC again this year.
HSOY will again be part of the Arizona Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). The campaign allows federal employees and military personnel to sign up for automatic deductions from their paychecks to be donated to charities that are part of the campaign.
In 2011, HSOY's first year as part of the campaign, we will receive over $15,000 from deductions that federal employees and military personnel sign up for in the fall of last year.
If you are employed by the federal government or a member of the military, you can give Yuma's pets in need a gift this week that will keep giving all through 2012. With the Arizona Combined Federal Campaign, you can donate directly to the Humane Society of Yuma with an automatic payroll deduction.
