HSOY brings humane education campaign to local school
HSOY will bring its Be Humane campaign to the students of Crane School District's Valley Horizon Elementary next week as part of the nationwide Be Kind to Animals Week.   HSOY staff will be at the school every day next week as part of HSOY's new humane education program.

"Pet overpopulation and cruelty are prevalent issues in Yuma County," says Annette Lagunas, Director of Operations for the Humane Society. "If we are going to improve the conditions for animals in Yuma - which ultimately means that conditions for us improve as well - we have to change the way we think of other living creatures. And that change starts with the education our youngest community members."

Every student who raises $15 or more will receive a "Be Humane" t-shirt and the opportunity to walk and play with several adoptable shelter dogs on May 6th.. The class who raises the most funds for the new shelter will be given a pizza party sponsored by Round Table Pizza and attended by a couple of furry visitors currently living at the shelter.

American Humane's National Be Kind to Animals Week has been celebrated every year during the first full week of May since 1915.

Celebrate Easter with chocolate bunnies and marshmallow chicks
BunnyWhile rabbits can be wonderful companions, buying a rabbit or chick for an Easter surprise or on a whim is as unwise as purchasing a puppy on impulse. One should take the same considerations when selecting a bunny friend as when you select a kitty cat or puppy dog. And, yes, you should definitely consider adoption. While we get a few rabbits a year, there are rescues in San Diego and Phoenix.

...and all that Jazz
Jazz
Whoever said, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks," hasn't met Jazz! Jazz is the jazziest Senior pet you'll ever meet. A 12 year old Chow-mix with a Corgi body, Jazz was adopted from us 11 years ago But his family of eleven years were moving and, unfortunately, the plans didn't include Jazz.

Jazz was, no doubt, getting excited about the move. He, no doubt, was understandably nervous. Moving to a new place can be scary because you don't know what to expect. But Jazz wasn't scared because he knew that no matter how unfamiliar a new home would be, he'd still be with his family of eleven years. Home is where the heart is, right? Jazz was sure that when his family stopped by the shelter where they adopted him eleven long years ago it was just for final good bye. You know, for memory's sake. But that's when everything in Jazz's life started crumbling like a bad dream. But there's a reason why he's named Jazz and not Blues; jazz is eternally upbeat, hopeful for the future.

We love Jazz so much and want him to live out the rest of his doggy years with a family that will love him until the end. Jazz is a quiet, well-mannered, walks good on a leash, and would be a great friend to enjoy life with. So Adopt a senior pet today, they have so much love to give and there only wish is to spend their golden years with someone who'll love them back.
Brownie
BrownieSay Hello to Brownie, a big sweetheart of a dog! Brownie was found walking down 21st Street by a concerned citizen. She came to us with nothing but a pink collar around her neck. No tags, no microchip and, worst of all, no owner has ever come looking for her. She's certainly a love bug.

Upon closer examination, Brownie's dewclaws were found to be growing into the paw pads of her front paws. The poor girl had to be in quite a bit of pain. And being a bit on the fluffy side, didn't help much either. She was having a real tough time walking, so the fantastic staff here at H.S.O.Y took great care of Brownie. She has had her nail's cut, cleaned, and to prevent further infection. She is finishing up her antibiotics and is just resting those pretty little paws of hers.

Brownie's lineage is possibly a Shepherd / Cattle dog, or Australian mix. She's around five years old and has been spayed, micro chipped, and has had all of her current vaccines including her rabies vaccine and is just a wonderful girl. Brownie seems to want nothing but love and she loves being close by your side and sneaking in doggy kisses whenever she gets the chance. Our volunteer Bridgette, one of our super volunteers, says, "Brownie would be a great friend and a perfect pet!" So head down to our shelter and visit this amazing girl and take her home today

Adoption Success: Roxy
Success 1This is HSOY alum "Roxy" who we saw at the dog park today- she was a stray with an unregistered microchip who'd had at least one litter of puppies when she was found on Pacific Ave. Now she lives with a loving couple who take her to the dog park 4-5 times a week and love her quirky & energetic personality. Happy pup.
