Be Humane Day: Free and Discounted Items through HSOY and Participating Business on Saturday, April 2nd

The Humane Society of Yuma and local businesses are teaming up to celebrate Yuma's "Be Humane Day" on Saturday, April 2nd. Individuals who wear their "Be Humane" t-shirts into participating businesses will receive a free or discounted item as a thank you for supporting the community's new shelter.

"The community has been amazing in their efforts to support the existing and future shelter," says Molly Bowes, Capital Campaign Coordinator for HSOY's New Shelter Project. "We have everyone from school kids saving their allowances, to snow birds gifting us their estates, to businesses donating materials and professional expertise in order to see Yuma's animals safely in a new shelter. We started the 'Be Humane' campaign in part after being inspired by our donors."

The "Be Humane" campaign also grew out of the shelter's efforts to promote the humane treatment of animals while raising the funds for the construction of the new shelter, but HSOY employees soon realized that their slogan was farther reaching than their own visions.

"We live in challenging times - recession, wars, natural disasters - sometimes it is difficult to navigate all of the tough news stories and meet our own family's needs let alone those of our neighbor's," says Bowes. "Yet it is during times like these that the smallest gestures can have the greatest impact."

Bowes says that the "Be Humane" phrase, which has a very specific meaning for her and her co-workers, is essentially a universal idea practiced by people everywhere in their own way.

"HSOY's idea of 'being humane' is taking the time and making the effort to care for some of our community's displaced and neglected members - the animals. But someone else's way of 'being humane' may be donating supplies to a local food bank or shelter, or tutoring a child at one of our schools, or simply having the patience to help an elderly person in a crowded supermarket."

Come early to Critter Country!

Critter Country comes to town
There will be a limited number of tickets available at the door tomorrow as ticket sales have been very good before the event.

So come early if you haven't purchased a ticket yet and dust off your boots and get ready for the "Critter Country Comes To Town" at the fancy Yuma Palms RV Resort on Saturday, March 26, 5:30 to 10 p.m.  We promise to have quite the party at our beautiful indoor/outdoor venue with two barbecue buffet stations and two saloons serving all your favorite beverages!

The auction items are pouring in thanks to the generosity of our item donors and hard working volunteers who are rallying the local community and business owners to support our efforts. (If anyone would like to donate an item please give Claire Eckard a call and we can arrange to pick it up and we still need a few more volunteers, especially for the evening of the event). The rodeo folks are making our decorations extra special this year and we have several treats in store for everyone, including gourmet chocolates and cupcakes (is your mouth watering yet?).

This promises to be an exceptional event, so get on down to the Yuma Palms RV Resort and help Yuma's Critters in need!

"Why does Senator Gould hate dogs and cats?"

Ron GouldA bill in the Arizona Legislature that would have banned roadside sales of animals statewide has been brought to a screeching halt by a single lawmaker - Senator Ron Gouldwho has one of the worst records in the legislature on animal protection measures.

HB 2539; public sale of animals, sponsored by Rep. Frank Pratt, would have extended the prohibition on public animal sales statewide.  With strong bipartisan support, the bill passed the Arizona House by a landslide margin of 40-17-3 and was transferred to the Senate where Ron Gould single-handedly killed it by refusing to allow it to move forward.

Please call Sen. Gould at 602.926.4138 or email rgould@azleg.gov and ask him why he single-handedly killed the public sale of animals bill.  Ask him why he doesn't support local animal shelters and lowering costs to taxpayers in smaller communities throughout Arizona.

There's a reason why directors of animal shelters in smaller communities have requested a bill to extend the ban on roadside animal sales statewide. Local laws cannot solve this problem. We need a statewide ban on roadside animal sales.

Dale the Dachshund

Hi, I'm Dale the Dachshund (aka "Weiner boy"), former resident (twice) of HSOY. I'm writing to give you a six-month report on my owner and myself. First me: it's pretty scary being a second-timer and going to a new home again. It's the great unknown, and I have no say in the matter. If you're a new owner, think about being more patient; we like to please. Don't be so quick to return us until we've gotten adjusted.

DaleMy new owner is pretty cool; even let me steer his car on our ride home from jail. His resident dog, Cacey, was also a second-timer and a lonely girl, and took to me right away (must have been my charming good looks).

I did the usual perimeter search, inside and out, and found it to my liking. Great backyard with a couple of trees and lots of bushes to hide in. I dug up the yard pretty bad the first week, but my owner didn't seem to mind, even if it did look like the Yuma bombing range.  He had a mole or two out back, and so I got one the first week. He was underwhelmed, so I took it inside, dead, and laid it in the middle of the living room carpet. He thought it was one of our toys and picked it up. Boy was he surprised. I thought that was real funny.

I love to run circles around Cacey in the living room. She gets real mad when she can't catch me in the middle. I jump on her back or grab her neck and the fun begins. When we get too loud, our owner yells at us. We eat too good (burp) and get plenty o attention. At night, I jump up on the owner's bed and pile up the covers so I can dive into the middle and hide.
Rescue Succcess:
Wilma goes to British Columbia.

I am writing from Penticton, BC, to tell you about our adoption of Wilma, a 10lbs Chihuahua/Pug that was a rescue at VJ Ranch - New River (623-465-4835).

WIlma at the shelterWe already have a Chi/Pug in our family (Gus) and found this mixed breed to be amazing, we thought we would try to find a similar buddy for him.]I was browsing Craigslist Phoenix because I know there are hundreds of dogs looking for homes down there.   I wasn't too serious about finding one there, after all, we live hundreds of miles north - what were the chances.

Well, apparently pretty good.  I stumbled across the picture of Wilma (named Cammy by the people who rescued him from the pound).  She was the sweetest looking miniature image of Gus.  I e-mailed Valerie Cook, the wonderful lady who rescues dogs who are on deck to be euthanized.  She posted the picture of this little dog and answered about fifty questions that I had.

I showed the picture to Spike (my partner) and he felt the same way as I did - that dog was for us.  He booked a flight to Phoenix on a Friday night, stayed the night in a nearby hotel, and was set to meet Wilma and Valerie at the airport the next morning.   Spike's flight was close to boarding and Valerie was nowhere in sight!  As it turns out, they were looking for each other one floor apart from each other. After lots of anxiety on Spike's part (and dedication on Valerie's part to spend so much time at the airport trying to find Spike), they all met and Spike was on his way back to Canada.

Wilma flew in the cabin of the plane in her little carrying case.  I'm sure she was scared, but was quiet as could be and cause no trouble on the flight.  They then had an hour's drive to get to our house where Gus and I were anxiously waiting their arrival.  It was love at first sight for all of us.  .  Gus was thrilled and accepted her immediately.   Wilma seemed to be equally as thrilled and is often seen gazing at Gus with stars in her eyes.

It brings tears to my eyes that she was so close to being euthanized.  She is the sweetest little dog anyone could ever hope for.  She loves to be praised and does everything she can to please us.  She wasn't too happy about the sub-zero conditions in the winter, but when she absolutely couldn't hold it anymore, she bravely went out to do her business.

I would love to figure out how to bring more of these dogs to Canada for adoption.  Although there are many dogs in pounds here, there aren't as many small dogs available for adoption and the situation isn't as severe here as it is there.  It is sad that so many people are breeding these dogs when there are thousands of them living in the streets and being euthanized in pounds every day.

A special thank you to Valerie Cook and everyone like her who spend so much of their time and money to help these helpless animals find homes.   Wilma has added so much to our family and she will have a happy home with us for the rest of her life.
