Help us check off all the items on the list. If you come to our shelter with an item on our list we'll take your picture and post it on our page and we'll check off a box on the list.

Next rabies clinic: This weekend at the Ave. B Albertson's
Our next rabies and licensing clinic is this Saturday from 10am - 1pm at the Avenue B. Albertson's. Make sure you and your four legged friend show up early so we can get you guys vaccinated and licensed as qucikly as possible so you can get out to enjoy the rest of your Saturday.
Remember that if your dog is good with his/her vaccinations, license online.
All dogs three months or older residing in Yuma County must be licensed by March 31st. The license verifies that your dog is current with his/her rabies vaccination.
If your dog is vaccinated, you may license online beginning January 1st with a scanned or faxed copy of your dog's valid rabies certificate. A valid certificate must be signed by a U.S. licensed veterinarian, state whether your dog is altered or not, and be current through at least April 1st.
If a rabies vaccine expires during the year, your dog must be revaccinated in order to keep the license valid. A license is invalid during any lapse between the expiration of a vaccination and revaccination.
If your dog needs to be vaccinated, the Humane Society of Yuma holds a number of rabies clinics at locations around the county for your convenience.

Nook
"Look at those eyes! What a beautiful cat!" Those are just some of the compliments Nook, a four year old neutered male, has heard being tossed his way. He has a purr-dy white coat with grey cow patch pattern and amazing green eyes. Nook also has a cute creamy pink and white nose. His family moved and left him in our care with hopes he'd find a new family. Nook is very friendly, a verified snuggle-bug He plays hide-n-seek and his favorite hobby is bird watching from the window. So if you enjoy cozy nights on the couch and you'd like a best friend to curl up with, Nook could be the purr-fect buddy for you!

Molly
Molly would like to use some of her star power she earned on KSWT yesterday to request a few pooper scoopers be donated to the HSOY. Molly is female Chihuahua-terrier blend who is around a year and a half old. She was found in the streets of San Luis, AZ and since no one has come to take her home, we have taken it upon ourselves to find her a forever home. Since Molly has been with us, she's been nothing but happy. She loves people and loves to curl up in her kennel bed. The math here is not difficult. If she loves people and her kennel bed, just think how much she;d love to share a real bed with a loving, forever family! If you provide the loving, forever home and the warm, soft bed, Molly will provide the happy, little girl that she is. Oh, and remember the thing about the pooper scooper because even stars have to potty from time to time.

Diesel finds his forever home in Yuma by way of the Rescue Express.
About a year ago, my wife and I were looking for a dog to add to our family. We have two cats and didn't feel like a puppy would be the right fit for our life. I wanted a large breed dog and was hoping to find a Rottweiler.
I believe in rescuing animals and support the mission of the humane society. So, naturally, that's where I started my search but was unsuccessful at finding the dog at the shelter that was a fit in our home. I was given the contact information for V.J. Ranch in Phoenix.
Val, the owner of V.J. Ranch, had a rottweiler that, like all the dogs at her ranch, had been saved from a euthanasia list of an Arizona animal shelter. The dog had actually been transported to the Ranch from the Humane Society of Yuma. He had been up for adoption here in the area but was unable to find a family. The V.J. Ranch literally saved his life.
I traveled to Phoenix to meet the rottweiler. At the ranch, I was introduced to my dog, Diesel. When we met, he certainly had some trust issues with humans. He would growl if you attempted to pet him anywhere other than his back. If he was playing with a ball and you came too close, he would growl some more. Although he was very defensive of his own space, he would avoid eye contact with anyone new and hold his head low. But, somehow during our first meeting, I just knew that this was my dog.
I adopted Diesel from the ranch that day and gave him a second chance. Diesel has scars on his neck that appear to be from a rope that may have once been tightly tied to him. This was an indication to me that he may have been mistreated and just needed to be shown that not all humans wanted to hurt him.
My wife was extremely timid with him at first, due to how vocal he was with growling, and his body posture. But we continued to work with him at home. My wife had the idea to take him to obedience classes at PetSmart. Diesel is a big boy and she hoped that this would make her more confident in dealing with him since she would be unable to control him physically. This turned out to be a phenomenal decision. Lesley, the instructor, was great at teaching us how to create the proper relationship with Diesel and how to have a well mannered, obedient dog.
Diesel has become a true member of our family. He loves affection now. Weighing approximately 110 lbs., he is the biggest lap dog I know! He has learned that toys are always more fun when a human is involved! Diesel is always very excited when he gets a car ride. We enjoy trips to PetSmart and to restaurants with patio seating.
People are regularly very interested to meet him, since rottweilers are a rare breed around this area. He is normally very receptive to meeting strangers, and has not shown any aggressive behaviors toward humans while out in public.
He is very obedient and listens well. Diesel truly has made the most of his second chance at life. There is no doubt that he is our dog and will remain so! I am forever grateful to Humane Society of Yuma and Val at V.J. Ranch for allowing me to have the dog I always wanted. |
