Public's help sought in emaciated puppy case

Hope

Animal control is seeking information regarding an extremely emaciated 12 week old boxer-pit bull mix found as a stray on Tuesday, October 12.  An animal control officer rescued the puppy in response to a call from a concerned citizen. Hope, as she has been named by HSOY staff,  is currently receiving veterinary care and remains in critical condition.

The puppy's ears had been non-professionally cut with the apparent intention to make her look like a pit bull with cropped ears.

Animal control officers are working closely with the Yuma Police Department.  If you have any information in regards to this case, please call animal control dispatch at (928) 782-1621 ext. 106 or YPD's non-emergency crime reporting hotline, 78-CRIME (782-7463).  You may remain anonymous if you wish.

HSOY also asks the community to donate to the Roo Bee Cruelty Fund.  The Roo Bee's  Cruelty Fund was established in 2006 to cover the costs of veterinary care for victims of cruelty.   Donations may be made online at www. hsoyuma.com, by mail, or in person.  Our mailing and physical address is 285 N. Figueroa Ave. Yuma, AZ  85364. Please make all checks out to HSOY with "Roo Bee Cruelty Fund" in the memo  line.

HSOY to hold major feral cat clinic.

HSOY's Feline Friends, Planned Pethood of Yuma and Arizona West Veterinary Clinic have joined forces to hold  a one day clinic today, October 14th, with the goal to alter 150 or more feral cats.

The clinic is being held  in observation of National Feral Cat Day on October 16th. National Feral Cat Day was first observed by Alley Cat Allies, a national cat-advocacy organization, in 2001 to increase the awareness of the plight faced by stray and feral cats.

Arizona West Veterinary Clinic has donated their staff for one day.  HSOY has received a $700 grant from IDEXX Laboratories for testing cats for Felv/FIV.  Additional donations for the have been made by Albertson's.

Feline Friends and Planned Pethood, a local non-profit, have dedicated themselves to the implementation of T.N.R. in Yuma.  Feline Friends, an HSOY member committee, helps facilitate the spaying and neutering of cats within the Planned Pethood program.

"Although we do not receive any government funding to handle cats, as the leading animal welfare organization we want to take a very active role in finding a solution to the cat overpopulation crisis in Yuma. I've been impressed with our partnership with Feline Friends and Planned Pethood thus far and am excited about the future," said HSOY Director of Operations Annette Laganus.

As part of the TNR (trap-neuter-return) program, volunteers trap feral cats to have them spayed or neutered. Prior to being altered, the cats are tested for feline leukemia and F.I.V.  After the surgery, each cat's ear is notched in order to easily identify feral cats that have not yet been sterilized.

The project is funded by the Humane Society of Yuma's thrift stores. All proceeds from the two thrift stores go towards funding HSOY's low cost and feral cat spay and neuter programs. The main store is located on the northwest corner of 4th Ave. and 24th Street.  The furniture store is at 3780 S. 4th Avenue Ext.  one mile south of Mervyn's next to the HSOY Spay and Neuter Clinic.

If interested in learning more about Feline Friends or to take part in HSOY's TNR program, please visit www.hsoyuma.com or by call the clinic at (928) 247-9115.

Note: The Yuma Sun's incorrect reporting that the clinic is to be held on Saturday rather than Thursday is our error entirely.  Our press release incorrectly stated that our clinic was being held on National Feral Cat Day (which is on October 16) whereas our clinic is being held on October 14.  We apologize to the Yuma Sun and the readers of the Yuma Sun for the error.

The Hollywood Hair Co.'s Grand Opening Celebration to benefit HSOY

Hollywood HairOn Saturday, October 16th, Yuma's only fifties-themed salon invites you to their grand opening celebration. The Hollywood Hair Company, located at 1025 S. 3rd Ave. will have live music, food, drink and arts and craft booths and free hair style consultations from 6 to 9pm.  There will also be prizes and raffles.  All proceeds will be donated to the Humane Society of Yuma.

Rasta

RastaRasta, an estimated two year old neutered male schnauzer mix, was wandering the streets scrounging around for food when he came to our shelter. Sadly, his time as a stray may have led to his dislike and mistrust of other dogs and thusly needs to be the only dog. He is, however, great with people. While he entered the shelter with the dreadlocks of long matted hair that earned him his name, he is no clean cut and ready for a forever home.
