When it comes to asking for stuff, there's nothing like a cute kitten or puppy to make the sales pitch.  But there's so many things they never see that we need to get them adopted and keep them happy while they're here.  Mainly, office supplies.

eBay Giving Works. How it works

Zero tolerance enforcement of roadside animal sales ban begins

Animal control officers have adopted a zero tolerance policy towards the enforcement of an ordinance banning the roadside sale of animals in the City of Yuma.

The ordinance prohibits the sale of animals on public streets any public right-of-way,street or park or any public property adjacent to a right-of-way, street or park. It also bans the sale of animals on any non-residential private property without the express written consent of the owner or lessee of the property. Violators of the ban are guilty of a Class 3 Misdemeanor and are subject to a $500 fine or one day in jail.

"Up to now, we've issued warnings to first time violators to increase awareness of the ban." Animal Control Sergeant Aaron Action stated. "But the grace period has ended."

Roadside animal sales raise public health concerns for both humans and other animals due to exposure to unvaccinated animals. In addition, roadside animal sales encourage impulse buying, and the purchaser is often not prepared for the commitment of caring for the animal.

The public is urged to report persons in violation of this ordinance to Animal Control at782 1621 ext. 106. Acton stated that the highest concentration of violations occurs on the Big Curve (4th Ave. & 32nd St.).

The ban was approved by the Yuma City Council in August, 2008. While the Arizona Legislature had passed a similar measure earlier that year, counties with fewer than 800,000 residents were exempted.

4 Paws Pantry is in need of pet food donations

4 Paws Pantry, HSOY's pet food assistance program, is in need of puppy and dog food donations. 4 Paws Pantry is meeting a critical need as Arizona's economy continues to stuck in hard times and your help is very much needed.  Donation drop offs are at our shelter, both thrift stores, the spay & neuter clinic and the following Starbucks: the Big Curve, Yuma Palms and Avenue B and 24th Street (the stand-alone location, not the one inside Albertson's).

Media Pet of the Week
Brownie, Heart-broken but forever hopeful

Brownie

Meet Brownie, this week's celebrity ambassador.  Brownie is a one year old, neutered male lab mix. He's a relaxed guy who is just a bit smaller than a full bred lab. Poor Brownie has had his hopes up a few time after  people look at him and he is heart-broken. He really perked up for his picture because he  just loves to be with you and make you smile. Make Brownie's day and save a life, adopt! Brownie is available Thursday, July 29th at 10am.
