Availability of low-cost spay & neuter increases as volume of surgeries sky rocket.

Our spay/neuter clinic has been open for less than three months and has already had a great impact. Here, Pam Nalley is handing over a cat who, while not broken, still needed fixing and is leaving better than new.
Pam Nalley at Spay/Neuter Clinic

Until March 1st of this year, all spay and neuter surgeries were done in a small trailer behind our shelter.  To accommodate our expanding spay and neuter program, we procured a storefront location.  This gives us not only the necessary room to facilitate more surgeries, but also relieves some of the overcrowded occupancy of the shelter.
We have nearly doubled the number of surgeries  in the first five months of year over last year.  Last year, between January 1st and May 31st we did 777 surgeries.  This year, we have done 1,535.  The number of surgeries will only increase as the staff and assisting veterinarians become fully situated, and more funds are received from both donations and our thrift shop stores.
A big thank you  to PETCO for awarding a $3,000 grant for new medical equipment.

With such an increase in the number of surgeries, we have nearly eliminated the once two month waiting period for low-cost surgeries.  Please encourage your friends and family to apply at www.hsoyuma.com/spaynueter
The Gadsden Adoption

GadstenForget the Gadsden Purchase, this is the Gadsden's adoption. Gadsden is a six month old, neutered male lab mix. He was found wandering out near Gadsden, hence his name. He is very much a puppy, that loves playing and exploring.  We often joke that he is Goofy Gadsden because he is a typical clumsy, happy -go- lucky puppy. He is sure to entertain you with hours of puppy antics.
Mesquite Elementary raises over $1,000 for Yuma's homeless pets!

Mesquite Elementary

Mesquite Elementary wanted to make a difference in the community.  So the Mesquite Elementary Top Readers Club, led by Mrs. Reichelt, made a list of all the things they could raise funds for. The students narrowed the list to the Humane Society of Yuma and the Navy Marines Relief Society. Several animals come to Mesquite Elementary every week to be part of the learning environment. They also have a large number of students from military and U.S. Border Patrol families.

They started a fund raising campaign named Helping Heroes because each student is a hero for helping others and they were helping both military and animal heroes. They set a goal to raise $1,000 in eight days.  But they didn't meet their goal,  They shattered it.  They raised a total of $2,166.50 with each organization receiving $1,083.25.  They were absolutely thrilled with the amount raised by students and staff. The class at each grade level that donated the most money was served root beer floats by the Sixth Grade Top Readers.  Awww, the sweet taste of success.  Our pets are very grateful.

Pizza for Pets in June

Round Table PizzaNo, we don't feed our pets pizza. "Pizza for Pets" is a fund raiser  that Round Table Pizza will be holding to benefit Yuma's homeless pets.  On every Wednesday in the month of June, $1 will be donated to the Humane Society of Yuma for every large pizza sold.  There are a total of five Wednesdays in this month, so let's make this fund raiser a success.  We can make a difference in our homeless pet's lives one slice at a time!

"Paint for Pups" extended through month of June

Plaza Paint
For the month of May, Plaza Paint donated $1 for every gallon of paint sold on Saturday.  On Wednesday, June 8th, the Humane Society of Yuma was presented a check for $180.00 dollars. The fundraiser was such a success that Plaza Paint has decided to continue Paint for Pups for the month of June.  So if you are considering remodeling your house, or just putting some color on the walls, go to Plaza paint.  You'll be making your house fabulous, and saving lives all at once.... now you really have a reason to finish that home project.

Fur Ball IV

You are invited to Fur Ball IV, an annual black tie affair to benefit the New Shelter on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010 at the AWC Community Center 6:00 p.m.   For the main entrée, guests will be served a choice of rib eye steak or vegan sweet potato gnocchi.  A few of the highlights will be a live and silent auction. Guests will be serenaded by a jazz band during cocktail hour and a dance band after the auction.  So mark your calendar, you can't afford to miss this annual gala in the name of Yuma's homeless pets. Beginning July 1st, tickets will be available online for $150 or reserve a table for $1,200 (serves eight guests).
June is Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month

Every year, the Humane Society of Yuma joins animal shelters across the country in recognizing June as Adopt a Shelter Cat Month.  June is the cruelest month of kitten season and in hopes of alleviating the tragedy, two cats may be adopted for the fees of a single adoption.

Our cat room is filled with cutest kittens waiting for you to take them and a buddy home.  So take some time this Memorial Day weekend to sit down with your furry children and prepare them for the arrival of more fluffy siblings.
