Meet Wall-E

Wall-E Wall-E is one year old neutered male black lab mix.  Actually, we aren't really sure what Wall-E is, but one thing that we do know is that this guy sure is cute!  Wall-E walks great on a leash and loves to play fetch with his toys.  Wall-E will be available for adoption on Thursday, March 25th at 11:00 am at the Humane Society of Yuma.  If you looking for a fun-loving pup to add to your family, Wall-e is your guy!

Last rabies clinic before March 31st deadline

Happy dogs wait for their vaccinations at Albertson's earlier in the year.
Rabies clinic at Albertson's
On Saturday, March 27th, the Humane Society of Yuma will hold a rabies clinic at the Fry's Shopping Center in the Foothills.  It will be the final rabies clinic before the March 31st deadline. Vaccinations start at 10am and the line will close at 1pm sharp.  Services offered include rabies, bordatella, and Da2PPcvk vaccinations, microchipping, and pet tags.

Why spend time in line?  If your dog already has his/her rabies vaccination you don't need to stand in line.  You can license online. Just scan or fax your rabies certificate.

Please note that HSOY will continue to hold rabies clinics beyond the March 31st deadline but the late fee will apply.

Fore Paws Golf Tournament 2010

On Saturday, May 15, the Humane Society of Yuma will hold our annual Fore Paws Golf Classic at Mesa del Sol Golf Course.

Get your four person team together and spend the day driving, chipping and putting for Yuma's homeless, unwanted and abused pets. The tournament begins with 8am shotgun start and is an eighteen hole, two drive scramble with awards for the longest drive and closest to the pin.

It's $80 per person.  The entry fee includes green fees, cart, range balls, tri-tip lunch, prizes and skins.

You can register online or download the registration form at the link provided.

Here comes Peter Cottontail...
In less than two weeks, the Easter Bunny cometh and with him (or her) will be the temptation for many to get a live bunny (or chick). Getting a rabbit takes just as much thought and responsibility as any a cat and dog. "Make Mine Chocolate" is a great campaign to combat the impulsive buying of live bunnies around Easter.

If you decide that a rabbit is the right pet for you, remember to adopt one. We get a few every year and there are rabbit rescues in San Diego and Phoenix.
Cruelty and rescue success story: Destiny
Destiny when she first came to our shelter
Destiny, Day One
Destiny was found and rescued by HSOY animal control officers on March 28, 2009.  She was severely emaciated and was suffering from pneumonia.  She was sent to a foster home where she was put on a high dosage of antibiotics, breathing treatments, percussion therapy and fed every two hours. When rescued, she weighed under thirty pounds. Three weeks later she weighed in at 43 lbs.  Last summer, she was taken from foster care to the care of Mayday Pit Bull Rescue in Phoenix and set about looking for the very best forever home for her. She was adopted on March 5, 2010 to Julie and James Westgate.  On Wednesday, March 24, nearly a year after her being rescued by HSOY, our Director of Operations Annette Lagunas received the following update from the Westgates.

Dear Mrs. Lagunas,
I volunteer with Mayday Pit Bull Rescue here in Phoenix and that is how I met Destiny. Our fourteen year old lab/pit mix died on February 10th and we were devastated. When I shared the news with friends, including Jennifer from Mayday, I said that when the right dog comes along we will adopt again.  I was being 'funny' and started listing all the characteristics we were looking for in a Dog - thinking nothing of it. Jennifer immediately e-mailed me and said "That is Destiny to a tee!"

My husband and I met her, Jennifer brought her over to our home a few times to meet the three cats, and she truly is EVERYTHING we were looking for in a Dog. We formally adopted Destiny on March 5th and our suspicion that she was born to be our dog was confirmed.  The fact that her name is Destiny did not escape our attention!

Destiny
She has settled in nicely and she and the three cats get along just fine. I can assure you that anything Destiny experienced in her past will be made up for one thousand times over. EVERYONE who has met her has fallen in love with her. Whenever I take her for walks people stop me to comment on how beautiful she is or what a great dog she is. After the comments, I am ignored and Destiny has the spotlight.

She is a fantastic dog, friendly, loving and oh so sweet! She is very smart and is learning basic obedience commands quickly and we do not even start formal training until April 5th. She has not one ounce of food aggression and will 'give' me her rawhide right from her mouth- if she has not already dropped it at my feet. She has adapted to our routine almost seamlessly - I am always amazed by animals and their capacity to forgive.

Destiny
Again, I can guarantee you that from now on she will have an amazing life with us. Our pets are our children and we are so grateful they choose us.
I have attached some pictures - if possible please share this note and pictures with anyone who worked with, worked on behalf of, gave medical care to or fostered Destiny.

Thank you for all the work you, everyone at HSOY and  Detective Juarez/law enforcement did not only for Destiny but do for every animal you help.

Our Family is truly blessed!!

With warmest regards,

Julie, James, Treasure, Sunny, Spirit and Destiny Westgate
