Think there's no way for us to compete with shelters with a higher population base?  Last week, a shelter in Denison, Iowa with a population of 7,000 in the sparsely-populated western half of the state, won the weekly grant of $1,000 and is in the lead.  So we could easily take the lead! Spread the word!
Roxie: Media Star

Roxie - Media Pet

Roxie is a three month old female Shepherd Mix who was adopted out earlier this year and returned to our shelter for the simple fact that she was too large. If you are considering adopting Roxie, please be aware that she is a puppy and will be a large dog. Roxie is a lovable pup who generally loves life and a good time.  She is pretty hard to resist with her big brown  eyes, and teddy bear face! Roxie is believed to be good with children and other dogs, and does not need to be a only pet.  She will be available for adoption at our shelter on Thursday at 11am.
HSOY alum alerts family to fire

Tripod at the shelter to get his picture taken. On Wednesday, Kristene and John Quintero came to the shelter to tell us the story of how Tripod, their three-legged Chihuahua, saved them from a house fire in the early hours of Monday. With his house filling up with smoke and a smoke alarm that wasn't going off, Tripod realized it was up to him to alert his family to the imminent danger.

The Quinteros adopted Tripod from HSOY in January 30, 2005. Tripod came to HSOY as a stray, hobbling around the streets of Yuma with his three legs. According to Kristene, the vet told her that Tripod's leg had been surgically amputated no more than two months prior.

The Quinteros are convinced that if it were not for Tripod, they wouldn't have woken up in time.  They said they felt compelled to share their story of how an adopted shelter dog saved them and his "oblivious" purebred Italian Greyhound brother. "Anything to get the word out that there are such good dogs here [at the shelter] that need homes," said John Quinteros.

HSOY adoption success story: Barney
Editor's note: There's no such thing as too many adoption success stories.  Fortunately for us, Linda, our Adoption Supervisor, receives quite a few.

Linda,

I received your card today regarding the dog I adopted from you 11/3/09. He is such a fun fun dog and has gained the weight he needed to. I am not sure what you had named him but we named him Barney because we already had a doxie called Fred so now we have Fred and Barney. Barney

He is very lovable, loves attention and you would not believe the two of them. From the moment I brought Barney in the door there was very little sniffing it was off to play and has been that way ever since. He just fits in perfectly and gets more love that any one dog needs, they both do. They are both lap dogs and love to either lay down with you or sit in your lap, but no matter what if they are not playing they have to be right where you are.

I am so glad I picked him or I should say he picked me. The first time I went through looking he jumped up on the cage and I looked at him and told him I would be back I had to go through once more and it was if he understood me because the second time I went to his cage he was sitting looking at me with these really sad eyes that just said take me home and that was all it took and we have been buddies ever since.

Thank you and all your staff for all their help that day.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth
