Welcome to Funding News 7, the monthly ebulletin containing all the latest funding news and information for the voluntary and community sector.
There are lots of funding opportunities in this month's issue together with funding advice workshops and training sessions.

Introduction to Social Enterprise
Introduction to Social Enterprise, Thursday 17 November from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at Community Action, 4 Charnwood Street, Derby.
Are you an organisation that is heavily dependant on grant funding? Would you like to find out more about the alternatives that could benefit the development of your organisation? If so, this course is for you!
By the end of this session learners will:
- Understand what trading is.
- Recognise the benefits of a social enterprise.
- Have an awareness of how to develop a social enterprise.
- Identify different sources of funding.
There is a small charge for this training session:
£10 for voluntary groups under £10,000 turnover;
£25 for voluntary organisations over £10,000 turnover; and
£50 for statutory organisations.

Santander Workshop
This is a great opportunity to meet Alan Eagle who runs the Santander Foundation. As part of the workshop he will be delivering two interactive presentations; the first on what funding is available from the Santander Foundation, how to apply and eligibility for funding; and a presentation called 'Avoid the Bin' which is intended for people either new to fundraising or who do not undertake fundraising as a full time job.
There will also be the chance to ask Alan about applications and any queries you may have.
Who is the fund for? Organisations with charitable status - Registered Charities, Friendly Societies, Industrial and Provident Societies registered under charitable, not membership, rules - the exception to this is Credit Unions who can be funded.
What Santander fund:
Education and Training - this could be an activity disadvantaged people undertake to improve their confidence in a skill of their understanding of a subject.
Financial Capacity - covers activities which help disadvantaged people understand how to manage their money.
Grants of up to £10,000 are available - the average grant awarded is £4,000.

Funding Fair - Thursday 12 January 2012
Are you looking for funding to continue your existing services? Are you developing new projects/activities that need funding? Why not come along to our Funding Fair on 12 January 2012 at Community Action from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. So far we have the following funders booked:

Voluntary Sector Workforce Development Fund
The aim of this grant is to support providers to develop the skills of paid and unpaid staff who support others out in the community and in their own homes, and will help to achieve better outcomes for people and promote dignity in care. Groups that provide support to local people are invited to consider the grant.

Kellogg's Swim Active Programme
The programme provides grants to help support not-for-profit organisations to run swim-based activities and projects. The objectives of the programme are to:
- Enhance the motivation to swim
- Remove the barriers to swimming
- Increase participation in swimming
Applicants must be from non-profit making organisations, which include:
- Swimming clubs
- Schools
- Pool operators
- Community organisations
- Social enterprises

BBC Children in Need
There is a deadline coming up for the BBC Children In Need general grants programme, which includes the Small and Main grant schemes.
Small grants scheme offers grants of up to £10,000 a year for up to three years, for projects working with children and young people.
Main grants scheme - there is no upper limit but very few grants are made over £100,000. Grants can be given for up to three years.
BBC Children In Need will consider funding support costs associated directly with a project but won't fund organisational overheads and running costs where these are not integral to the project you are applying for. The next deadline is 15 January 2012.

Grimple's Green Grants
Grimple's Green grants offer up to £40,000 to environmentally friendly projects. They are offering funds up to £2,000 to small projects and organisations with a special £10,000 grant available to one project voted for by the public.

Church Urban Fund - grants of up to £5,000
The Church Urban Fund provides grants to enable churches and faith-based organisations working in very deprived communities to engage in social action through supporting them to initiate or develop community work. This will enable groups to either undertake larger pieces of work or significantly improve the existing provision. It is a rolling programme where there are no deadline dates.

Yapp Charitable Trust
Makes grants to small registered charities to sustain their existing work with:
- Elderly people
- Children and young people aged 5 to 25
- People with disabilities or mental health problems
- Moral welfare - people trying to overcome life-limiting problems of a social, rather than medical origin
- Education and learning
Grants can only be offered to registered charities with an annual expenditure of less than £40,000. For more information visit the Yapp Charitable Trust website or call 0191 4922118. |
Sport England - 2nd Round Grants
The programme Protecting Playing Fields (PPF) is investing £10 million of National Lottery Funding in community sports projects over three years from 2011-2014. The purpose of this programme is to focus on protecting and improving playing fields and developing community sport.
The programme will fund capital projects that create, develop and improve playing fields for sporting and community use and offer long term protection of the site for sport.

Equitable Charitable Trust
This is an education charity that makes grants totalling upto £1 million each year towards projects for children and young people under the age of 25 who are from disadvantaged backgrounds or disabled.
There are 3 specific priorities:
- Education projects or services that support the learning and development of disabled children and young people in the UK
- Formal education projects for disadvantaged children and young people that support delivery of the National Curriculum or that deliver accredited vocational learning that will increase employability.
- Education projects that will help increase participation in, or improve the quality of, education for disadvantaged or disabled children and young people in developing countries.

The People's Postcode Trust
The People's Postcode Trust is the grant-giving independent charitable trust of People's Postcode Lottery. They distribute funds to small organisations, community groups and registered charities. Funding is available for 3 month projects ranging from £500 up to £10,000. Funding will be awarded to projects with one or more of the following aims:
- To prevent poverty;
- To promote, maintain and advance health;
- To advance citizenship or community development;
- To advance public participation in sport;
- To promote, improve and advance human rights, conflict resolution or reconciliation; and
- To promote and advance environmental protection or improvement

Sanctuary Housing Group - Grand Ideas
The Grand Ideas Fund will offer up to £1,000 to groups which need some financial support to help deliver activities within their community. This funding could go towards:
- Healthy eating projects
- Training opportunities
- Materials for a fun day event
Funder's criteria:
- Financial and economic inclusion
- Youth activities
- Community facilities
- Care and support
- Improving physical and emotional wellbeing

The Archer Trust
The Archer Trust is a UK Christian charitable grant-making trust that aims to support small UK charities that help people with physical or mental disabilities or people facing disadvantage. Preference will be given to those organisations working in areas of high unemployment and deprivation. The grants available range from £250 - £3,000. There are two deadlines a year in September and March.

The Triangle Trust Fund
The Triangle Trust's current areas of interest for support are:
- Carers
- Community arts and education
- Disability
- Older people
- Poverty
- Integration and rehabilitation
Priority is given to:
- Smaller charities
- Charities that serve a locality or region of the UK, rather than national charities.
Grants are normally in the range of £1,000 to £10,000 with the majority of grants around £4,000 to £5,000. For more information visit the Triangle Trust website. |

Other Funding News
Big Lottery Fund to offer an extra £50 million to voluntary organisations
An increase in lottery ticket sales means the Big Lottery Fund can offer hundreds of extra grants. The annual budget for its Reaching Communities and Awards For All programmes will increase by £12 million and £5 million respectively.

Cutswatch has been set up to provide guidance and support to third sector organisations through public spending cuts. Gift Aid - Tax relief for charities
Gift Aid is an easy way to help your charity maximise the value of its donations, as you can reclaim tax from HM Revenue and Customs on the gross equivalent.
