Derby Open CentreDerby Open Centre Consultation Event

The Open Centre in Derby has been working since 1981 to promote good community relations in Derby and Derbyshire.  A consultation event is being held on 27 September at 6:00 pm to discuss the future of the Open Centre.

You may feel that there is no need to educate young people about the different communities that make up Derby and Derbyshire today or you may feel that the best way to overcome prejudice is to promote understanding through personal experience and contact between communities.  You may also have ideas that will help to break down barriers between communities

Your views will determine what the Open Centre does in the future.  If you are interested in attending email Derby Open Centre or call 01332 360737.

The interactive Voluntary Sector Calendar is packed with events and training - you can add your organisation's events too!  We hope that the Voluntary Sector Calendar will become the place to go to find out about what's going on and when.  It will also be useful as a planning aid and hopefully prevent large events being scheduled for the same day.  To get started click here.

trainingSurvive and Thrive

Survive and thrive: achieve and sustain success by moving to the world's top business and quality management practices

The adoption of world-class quality standards such as ISO 9001 is a growth area and third sector organisations need to show that they work to the highest standards and provide efficient, value for money services.

In recent years the move towards a contract culture has increased the need to be accountable to funders and gain an edge in competitive tendering processes.  In turn this has led to an increase in the take-up of the world's top quality standards.

Two identical FREE awareness sessions are being held at Community Action to:

  • Introduce the main aspects of ISO 9001, the top standard for quality;
  • Demonstrate modern techniques for sustaining excellence, allied to 9001; and
  • Show uncomplicated ways in which the voluntary and public sectors can use these techniques

Date and Time:       Thursday 6 October              10:00 am to 1:00 pm

Wednesday 19 October       10:00 am to 1:00 pm

Venue:                      Community Action

                                    4 Charnwood Street, Derby DE1 2GT

Cost:                          FREE

A buffet lunch will be provided during each session.  For more information or to book a place email Liz Gumbley or call 01332 227738.

Derby City Council is offering free trees and shrubs to schools and community groups in Derby to plant hedgerows.  Under the scheme, schools and community groups can apply for 100 trees and shrubs to plant or renovate hedgerows this autumn.

The idea is to encourage local communities and schools to make the most of their environment, help habitat creation, increase biodiversity and provide an excellent learning experience by watching the trees and shrubs grow; seeing how wildlife is encouraged and the changes through the seasons.

For more information and to apply for your FREE trees and shrubs email WildDerby  or call 01332 255021 or minicom 01332 256666. please note that the closing date to apply is Friday 28 October.

InformationStrategic Intelligence Assessment

The Derbyshire Constabulary and Safer Derbyshire, City and Neighbourhood Partnerships is undertaking an assessment of community safety, known as the Strategic Intelligence Assessment. The aim is to identify the main risks to community safety throughout the force area from a robust evidence and intelligence base and then to bring partners together to agree effective actions to reduce the risks that these areas pose.

The key risk areas have been identified as:

  • Safeguarding children (including missing children, child exploitation and youth crime)
  • Organised Criminal Gangs
  • Alcohol Related Harm (including health and alcohol related crime)
  • Drugs
  • Domestic Violence
  • Rape and Serious Sexual Assault
  • Serious Acquisitive Crime and Offender Management (Robbery, burglary, and dealing with those who cause the most harm in our communities)
  • Safeguarding Adults
  • Anti-Social Behaviour
  • Killed and Seriously Injured (Road Traffic Accidents)
  • Terrorism

There is already a lot of good work going on to deal with these issues and it is important to capture and identify this in any future action plans that are developed to ensure a consistent and co-ordinated partnership approach to dealing with them. The document will be circulated towards the end of October with a meeting being arranged for early November to discuss the way forward.

Please let us know if the work that you are engaged in is contributing to any of the preventative agendas attached to these issues so that voluntary and community sector activity can be properly acknowledged in the document and considered within any future plans.  Matthew Allbones, Operations Director at Community Action Derby will be attending the meeeting.
