Putting the Third Sector First: Annual Networking Event
We are holding our (short) AGM and annual networking event, the largest of its kind, on Wednesday 21 September from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm in the Darwin Suite, Assembly Rooms in Derby. Come along and network with voluntary and community groups in Derby - there will be lots of stands with information and funding advice too! Money Advice Trust - Innovation Grants Programme
The Money Advice Trust can support projects relating to financial inclusion. The priority areas are:
- Development of new information and resources to share with others;
- Working with people who are usually excluded from society;
- Projects that combine money advice and financial capability;
- Help for those who are homeless or facing homelessness
The Trust is looking for original and innovative projects and will not fund projects which are duplicating existing work. Grants range from £1,000 to £30,000. Deadline for applications is 1 September 2011. For more information visit the Money Advice Trust website. |

Old Possum's Practical Trust Arts Grants
This trust seeks to increase knowledge and appreciation of any matters of historic, artistic, architectural, aesthetic, literary, musical or theatrical interest. The amount of funding ranges from £500 - £5,000. For more information visit the Old Possum's Trust website.

Tudor Trust
The Tudor Trust focuses on smaller groups, led by people with a vision, that are committed to growth, progression and development. Some of the other characteristics they are looking for when they make grants include: - Organisations providing direct services to marginalised people.
- A focus on building stronger communities by overcoming isolation and fragmentation and encouraging inclusion, connection and integration.
- High levels of user involvement and an emphasis on self help.
- Organisations that are thoughtful in their use of resources and that foster community resilience in the fact of environmental, economic or social change.
- They are more likely to fund groups with an annual turnover of less than £1 million.

Hilden Charitable Fund
The Hilden Charitable Fund gives grants for projects that address disadvantages and in particular support projects that address:
homelessness;
asylum seekers and refugees;
community based initiatives for disadvantaged young people; and
penal affairs.

Sport England
This fund has launched a £50 million fund for sporting facilities to help voluntary and community groups with an interest in running sporting activity.
The following funding programmes are open to a wide range of organisations including sports clubs, voluntary/community organisations, local authorities, schools, colleges and universities.
Funding programmes that are currently open are:
Small Grants- awards of between £300 to £10,000 to deliver new community projects to either grow or sustain participation in sport or to support talent development;
Sportsmatch - makes awards to not-for-profit organisations that have secured sponsorship to deliver new community projects to grow or sustain participation in sport. Awards from £1,000 to £100,000 can be made to match funding from no more than five sponsors, with each sponsor contributing a minimum of £1,000. Funding for the project must be spent by 31 March 2012;
Iconic Facilities Fund(round 2 opens 10 October 2011) - this fund draws on the inspirational pull of London 2012 to create local beacons for grassroots sport. £30 million is being invested over the next three years in innovative, large-scale, multi-sport facilities projects that are regionally significant for at least two sports and can demonstrate long-term financial viability;
Protecting Playing Fields(round 2 opens 24 October 2011) - investing £10 million of National Lottery Funding in community sports projects over three years from 2011 - 2014. Round 2 closes on 12 December 2011. The programme will fund capital projects that create, develop and improve playing fields for sporting and community use and offer long term protection of the site for sport; and
Inspired Facilities - focuses on making it easier for local community and voluntary groups to improve and refurbish sports clubs or transform non-sporting venues into modern grassroots sport facilities.

Sutton Trust - Education Endowment Fund
The Sutton Trust has been awarded a £125 million grant by the Government to establish a new initiative to boost some of the UK's most disadvantaged children. The fund will be used to initiate grants and seek proposals from schools, teachers and charities to improve the performance of disadvantaged pupils in the most challenging schools. True Colours
True Colours are inviting applications for grants of up to £10,000 from small organisations in the UK to help them develop and deliver programmes for disabled children, their siblings and families. They are particularly keen to help support:
hydrotherapy pools;
multi-sensory rooms;
young carers projects;
mini buses;
projects for siblings and;
bereavement support.

MacRobert Trust
The MacRobert Trust offers grants from £5,000 to £10,000 for the following priority areas:
science and technology;
youth;
services and seaman;
ex-servicemen's/women's hospitals and homes;
education;
disabled; and
community welfare.

Funding For Social Enterprises
The Social Investment Business provides funding, support and long term strategic thinking to help third sector organisations - social enterprises, charities and community organisations - to do more of what they do best.
The SIB manages funds totalling £400 million. The funds provide funding and support to different types of organisations:
Social Enterprise Investment Fund - provides loans, grants and professional support to social enterprises involved in the delivery of health and social care services.
Futurebuilders England Fund- provides loan finance, often combined with grants and professional support to social enterprises and other third sector organisations that need investment to help them bid for, win and deliver public service contracts. This fund is currently closed to new applicants.
Communitybuilders Fund - provides loans, grants and business support to multi-purpose, inclusive, community-led organisations.

Big Lottery - Improving Financial Confidence
This is a new £30 million programme which will help social housing residents living in target local authority areas become better at handling their finances. They want to fund projects run by partnerships involving organisations providing housing and financial advice services. Partnerships must be led by a community sector organisation. They are offering grants between £500,000 and £1 million for projects lasting between three and five years. The aim of the programme is to give people more confidence and skills in accessing and using financial services, such as bank accounts and affordable loans.

Breaks4Kids
When organising a trip, many groups include a couple of children from low income households who simply can't afford to go. Breaks4Kids offers funding for up to 50% of the costs for trips away for under privileged children. With this support you can ensure that your trip is inclusive of the whole group. The Church and Community Fund
This fund encourages the church to engage with local communities by funding effective and innovative community outreach projects. The CCF awards grants to community projects run by local Anglican Churches in England or other organisations that are working in close partnership with the Church of England. The deadline for applications is 30 September 2011.
Types of projects supported include:
- the salary costs for youth;
- children's and community workers;
- the running costs for homeless centre;
- conversion of church buildings to enable use by the wider community;
- funding towards street outreach; and
- other socially engaging initiatives.

Drinkaware Grant
Drinkaware grants support alcohol awareness raising, such as positive alternative programmes or educational theatre, as well as innovative pilots, multi-agency educational partnerships and initiatives combining alcohol awareness with sports or other activities.
These funding schemes give local and national projects a fantastic chance to change the nation's drinking habits and make a positive difference to people's lives. There are 3 strands:
- Ideas Fund - up to £2000 - it is ideal for community based projects needing support to work out an initial idea before applying for a larger award.
- Awareness Projects - up to £25,000 - a larger award to help with project costs, resources or publicity for work already developed? This scheme offers the funds you need to deliver messages which raise awareness about alcohol misuse and bring about tangible change.
- Big Impact Awards - up to £100,000 - this is to help larger scale projects. Proposals need to show how any organisation's work has impact, and how it contributes to learning and alcohol awareness and education.

Tesco Charity Community Awards
This awards scheme provides one-off donations of between £500 and £4,000. The funding given goes towards practical benefits, such as equipment and resources for projects that directly benefit children, the elderly and adults and children with disabilities, living in the local communities around our stores in the UK.
Projects that have been supported:
- playground equipment
- sensory garden or room projects
- outdoor classrooms
- breakfast and after school clubs
- holiday play-schemes
- part funding to purchase minibuses
- befriending schemes
- luncheon/youth clubs
- specialist equipment for disabled people
- day trips/social trips for elderly/disabled people

Funding News Round-up
Green Grants Machine - this is a free service to help keep voluntary organisations up-to-date with the developments in green funding.
In registering for the alert service you will receive automatic alerts every time a new green grant that matches your profile is added to the website. You will also be alerted when any significant changes are made to existing funds. For more information and to register visit the Green Grants Machine website.
Cabinet Office launches £10 million to help voluntary organisations become 'contract-ready'. This fund is designed to help voluntary sector organisations prepare for new types of social finance and play a bigger role in public service delivery. The fund, called the Investment and Contract Readiness Fund, will open in April 2012 and will operate for three years. An external organisation will be appointed to administer the fund. The Cabinet Office statement said "We want to help organisations to develop the right skills, the right systems and the right attitude so that they are ready for investment and in a stronger position to win public sector contracts". Home Office offers £14 million funding to tackle crime. Two funds have been announced for voluntary sector organisations to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour. The funds will support local initiatives in England and Wales that empower communities to 'reclaim their neighbourhoods'. For more information visit Third Sector website.

Two FREE Funding Events
Wednesday 14 September - Lloyds TSB Foundation - 10:30 am to 1:00 pm at Community Action, 4 Charnwood Street, Derby. The Foundation are keen to meet with Derby based registered charities who are potentially looking to apply for grants. The Lloyds TSB Foundation is one of the UK's leading grant-makers, and funds small and medium under-funded charities working at the heart of communities to tackle disadvantage. The awareness session will:
Highlight the basic criteria of the Community Programme;
Provide groups with hints and tips on what makes a successful application; and
Give an opportunity for groups to talk about their own projects and experiences and their eligibility for funding.

Thursday 20 October (to be confirmed) - Big Lottery, Reaching Communities- 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at Community Action, 4 Charnwood Street, Derby. The Reaching Communities programme has 4 outcomes:
People having better chances in life, with better access to training and development to improve their life skills;
Stronger communities, with more active citizens working together to tackle their problems;
Improved rural and urban environments, which communities are better able to access and enjoy; and
Healthier and more active people and communities.

SROI or Measuring the Difference
DCAN is developing work on Social Return on Investment (SROI) under the banner 'Measuring the Difference'. SROI is an impact assessment tool that defines outcomes from a stakeholder perspective, identifies a financial proxy as a means of expressing the value of that outcome and compares the actual cost of a project or organisation, with the financial equivalent of the value it creates.
