InformationESF Community Grants - Advice Session 29 June

The East Midlands ESF Community Learning and Skills Grants programme was launched on Wednesday 15 June. The grants programme is designed to assist small not-for-profit groups based in, and run by, people from the community they support.

The aim of providing small grants is to give voluntary and community groups an opportunity to access funding to provide activities that help engage and progress people that are considered 'hard to reach'. Projects should provide an opportunity for people to engage with learning, to develop their confidence and skills and be more able to take advantage of  opportunities that help them progress towards the labour market.

For this first application round a total of £96,000 of funding is available across the region. Groups can apply for up to £10,000, with an expected average grant being £5,760.

Community Action Derby is working with Enable to support and promote this funding opportunity in Derby and Derbyshire and will be holding an information and question and answer session to help voluntary and community groups through the application process.

The session will be held on Wednesday 29 June - next Wednesday - from 10:00 to 11:30 am at Community Action, 4 Charnwood Street, Derby DE1 2GT.  If you would like to come along please email Liz Gumbley or call 01332 227738, so that we have an idea of numbers of people attending.

For more information about the ESF Community Learning and Skills Grants programme visit the Enable website.

ViewsEquality Act Consultation

The Government appears to be consulting on scrapping the Equality Act and having its provisions subsumed into other pieces of legislation.

If anything, the Equality Act could be made better. For instance the duty to reduce socio-economic disadvantage, the provisions on dual discrimination and the provision to make caste a protected characteristic could be implemented as originally intended. Even before they have been used, the government is looking to review the provisions on third party harassment with a view to repealing them.

As there now is no other legislation that underpins our right to live and work free of discrimination this is a worrying development.

To view the consultation and register your views visit the Red Tape Challenge website.

The BT Community Connections Awards have reopened for a second round of applications for 2011.

Hands up smallSurvey Results
A big thank you to everyone who took the time to complete Community Action's recent Volunteer Management Training Needs Analysis survey.

A total of 41 volunteer managers took part and the information gathered from the survey has helped us to review our current training plan.  The new training programme will be rolled out in September and will include volunteering related training along with other forms of group support such as business planning, tips to secure funding, and setting up a social enterprise to name a few.  The frequency of the Volunteer Co-ordinator Forums - VCF -  will also be increased from quarterly to bi-monthly.  The next VCF takes place on Wednesday 13 July at Oddfellows - please see separate article.

The names of everyone who took part in the survey were put into a draw to win a FREE place on a Community Action course.  The winning name drawn at random was Darren Griffiths from Addaction.
