Hello!

Welcome to another packed issue of Reach Out.

The Voluntary Sector Forum took place last week at the YMCA.  We had a great turnout with people coming  along to find out more about the Voluntary Sector Grant Aid Strategy.  There were lots of questions and, in response, DCC have issued a Q and A document - see below.

There are lots of training courses coming up in the next few weeks on topics ranging from social enterprise to funding and full cost recovery.  Democracy Day on 8 February is a one day event for people who want to find out how local communities can influence national, and local, policy-making.

Don't forget to check the Community Action website for the latest news, events and updates for voluntary and community groups in Derby.

If you have any news, information or events that you would like to share with the voluntary and community sector in Derby, please let us know.

Want to keep track of what we are doing? You can now follow us on Twitter - just type DerbyCA into the search box or click the link below!

Best wishes,

Jayne Williams

ViewsVoluntary Sector Can Influence DCC Budgets
Derby City Council is currently consulting on its proposed budget for 2011-12, including the proposed reductions in its grants to voluntary and community groups.

If you would like to have your say then please complete the Budget Consultation Survey. The Budget Consultation Survey is in addition to the current consultation on the review of the Derby City Council Grant Aid Strategy, which outlines the new strategic direction and commissioning priorities, featured in the last edition of Reach Out.  Click here to take part in DCC's Grant Aid Strategy Consultation. DCC have produced a document to answer questions arising from the Voluntary Sector Forum and The Compact meeting. To view the document visit the Community Action website.

If you would like to discuss any issues relating to these consultations you should either contact the DCC officer who manages your funding, or call Matthew Allbones at Community Action on 01332 227721 or email Matthew Allbones.

surveyImportant! Community Action Cuts Watch Survey
Please note that since the announcement of a national funding cuts survey, and to avoid duplication, our Cuts Watch Survey is now closed. In order to take part in the national survey visit the voluntary sector cuts website.  Please note that any responses already received will be fed into the national survey.

The Voluntary Sector Spending Cuts website was launched to map government spending cuts across the country.  The website gives voluntary and community organisations the opportunity to share their concerns about funding cuts and how they will impact on their ability to deliver vital services.
NAVCA logoEmpowering the Voluntary Sector Workshop

Funded by the Big Lottery, the Empowering the Voluntary Sector Project is running workshops with the aim of equipping voluntary and community organisations wit the knowledge to use the principles of public law and the Compact to negotiate effectively with public bodies.  Issues covered in the workshop include how to deal with unfair funding cuts and consultation and how to identify if a public body's decision-making processes are lawful.

These intensive and enjoyable workshops are open to staff and volunteers from all third sector organisations who are funded by, or seeking funding from, public bodies.  The workshops include sessions on:

  • Public law and the Compact.
  • Equality legislation.
  • Things that can go wrong.
  • What you can do when faced with these problems.

The next workshop in the region takes place on 28 February in Nottingham.  For more information and to book a place visit the NAVCA website.  The cost is £40 which includes lunch.
