Only two weeks to go to Derby's Biggest Festive Networking Event!

Come along and exchange your news, views and ideas with voluntary organisations and community groups.  Disability Direct; Women's Work; Addaction; and the Multi-Faith centre are just a few of the organisations who will be there.

Community EnterpriseCommunity Enterprise Survey
Community Enterprise delivers worklessness contracts on behalf of Community Action throughout the city, aiming to bring together placement providers and local people. The aim of this survey is to find out how we can make the engagement process easier for local groups/organisations. The employment programmes at Community Enterprise currently include:

Flexible New Deal - A placement for anyone who has been claiming benefits for over 12 months, placements need to be of 4 weeks duration, of 30 hours per week.  Placement providers are provided with a hosting fee of £30 per person;
Future Jobs Fund - A placement for anyone aged 18 to 24 who has been claiming Job Seekers Allowance for 6 months, placements need to be of 26 weeks duration, of 25 hours per week paid at National Minimum Wage.  Placement providers are provided with full funding from the Government which can be up to £5,000 per 26 week placement; and
Community Task Force - A placement for anyone aged 18 to 24, claiming benefits, placements need to be of 12 weeks in duration, of 30 hours per week.   Placement providers are provided with a hosting fee of £30 per person.

trainingMinute Taking Course - Basic Level 

Do you find that you are not confident about the procedure involved in taking minutes? Do you take too many notes at meetings?  This course will help you gain knowledge of how to write a set of minutes and the process afterwards for sending the minutes out to other meeting members.

 

By the end of this session you will be able to:

 

Identify the roles of a minute taker;  

Plan and prepare for a meeting;

Complete a set of minutes; and

Understand the procedure after a meeting.

The Big Society - it's all about us! 

Much has been written about the 'Big Society', but what does it really mean, and what should we, as activists, be doing to get our voice heard?

 

This free half-day event on 20 December at the Riverside Conference Centre in Derby, organised by the East Midlands Empowerment Partnership, will be a chance for you to find out more about what the Government says, and what other communities are doing to challenge the way local decisions are made.

 

The programme has been designed to help you:

Gain more understanding about the 'Big Society';

Hear examples of 'vanguard areas' and what's happening locally;

Network with other activists in the East Midlands;

Find out about full resources available; and

Learn about an exciting 'Big Offer Programme' which follows from this session and provides tools, learning and information through a series of free sessions to help you lead the way in getting things done in your community.

First Steps Christmas Celebration

First Steps Derby are holding a Christmas celebration evening on Monday 20 December at St Peter's Church Hall, Normanton Lane in Littleover DE23 6GA from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. The evening will feature a Christmas carol service, Santa's grotto; homemade Christmas cupcakes, Christmas crafts and hot drinks.

Media trust logoMedia Trust - Inspiring Voices
Showcase your community's fantastic use of digital media and you could be awarded £500 and communications support through the Media Trust's Inspiring Voices awards.

As part of their Community Voices Project
, the Inspiring Voices awards seek to celebrate and encourage the varied and inspiring ways in which communities are empowering themselves through the use of digital media.

They are looking for ten examples of community digital media projects that could help inspire other communities. The awards will be given to the ten applications that have made the strongest case for their project.  For more information about the awards and details of how to apply visit the Media Trust website.

Fitness50+ Groups Get Wii Fit!
If your group supports people aged 50 years and over why not hold fun Wii Fit sessions to keep your members active and encourage them to get fit?

Community Action have Wii Fit consoles available for hire to groups who meet certain criteria.  Your group must meet in community premises, have appropriate insurance and take responsibility for the equipment while it is on loan.

Equality Duty Scrapped
Home Secretary and Equalities Minister, Theresa May, has announced that the socio-economic duty which was created as part of the 2010 Equality Act will be scrapped.  The announcement came as the Home Secretary outlined a radical new approach to equalities that rejects political correctness and social engineering.  For more information and to read the speech in full visit the Home Office website.

Every year Derby Volunteer Centre is contacted by people who would like to do some volunteering over the Christmas period and mostly we have little to offer them locally.  This year we'd like to change that!

InformationPortability of CRB Checks

The Criminal Records Bureau has announced that it intends to make it possible for employers to share CRB checks, reducing the need for multiple checks. The Government aims to introduce this as part of legislation in the Freedom Bill, once detailed proposals have been modelled, developed and tested.  For more information visit the Home Office website.

Artcore brings you Creative Coats - mosaic sessions.  Come along to these fun sessions, bring along a planter, photo frame, plate or something you would like to decorate and professional artists will show you how to transform them using mosaic techniques. 

 

Perhaps with Christmas in mind you could create beautiful and personalised gifts for your loved ones. Everyone is welcome!

 

The two remaining sessions take place on 13 and 20 December from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at 75a Butterfly House, Rose Hill Street in Derby, DE23 8FZ.

Voluntary ForumNew! Derby Tourettes Support Group
Derby Tourettes Support Group has been set up to help and support people suffering from the syndrome and those affected by it - family, carers or support workers. The new group provides the only support network in Derby for those affected by Tourettes and they urge you to contact them if Tourettes touches your life.

 

The onset of Tourettes Syndrome is typically between the ages of 7 and 10 but can occur at any time. It is most prevalent in school children, becoming worse through puberty.  Current estimates suggest that 1 in every 100 school children worldwide has Tourettes.

 

The group meets at St Martin's School, Wisgreaves Road, Alvaston in Derby from 6:00 to 7:00 pm on the following dates:

12 April 2011

24 May 2011

19 July 2011

ViewsBuilding a Stronger Civil Society - Consultation 

As you are aware the Cabinet Office has now published 'Building a Stronger Civil Society: a strategy for voluntary and community groups, charities and social enterprises' and the consultation 'Supporting a Stronger Civil Society'.  

 

To view the consultation in full visit the Stronger, Civil Society website. We would encourage you to respond to the consultation as the outcome will determine how much support frontline organisations will receive in the future, which in turn directly impacts upon the support given to voluntary and community organisations.

Please note that the deadline for responses is 6 January.  

InformationTenders Invited for Children's Services

NHS Derby City are inviting tenders for universal children's services for the population of Derby City and, together with NHS Derbyshire County, targeted children's services for Derby City and South Derbyshire.

This procurement process is to secure a new provider of universal and targeted children's services which includes the Healthy Child Programme - 0 to19 years; children's therapies; specialist children's nursing; HPV vaccine coordination; and children in care nursing and safeguarding.

Prestige Nursing, established in 1945 and an approved supplier with Derby City Council, are offering a new service for people with dementia and their carers.

 

The aim of the dementia home-based respite service is to promote and provide breaks for individuals with dementia and their carers.  The service offers short breaks for carers who are supporting people with dementia at home.   

 

The purpose of the service is to ensure that people are socially included in their local communities.  The service will support people with dementia to be able to remain independently in their own home for as long as possible.

 Derby Women's Centre, located at 4 Leopold Street in Derby offer a wide range of support and activities to women in the city. They currently offer aromatherapy, reiki healing and hypnotherapy together with a counselling service, pregnancy testing and debt advice. They also hold regular informal coffee mornings where everyone is welcome.

Launch of Sight Support Derbyshire - Formerly DAB 

On Wednesday 8 December blind and visually impaired members, trustees and other guests of Derbyshire Association of the Blind will gather to launch a new four year strategy, together with a new working name of Sight Support Derbyshire.

 

The new name and strategic plan are intended to revitalise the image and profile of the charity and set it on course to cover the next 4 years, up to its centenary in 2014.  Sight Support Derbyshire is the largest provider of services to people with a visual impairment in Derbyshire.
