The Compact and Public Sector Cuts
Compact Logo
An article by the Compact Advocacy team highlights the way in which  Compact working can be used to help voluntary organisations and public bodies work together effectively to deal with problems being faced in the current economic climate.

The article gives an example of a funder working with groups to find out what the impact of across the board cuts  - which many local authorities make -  mean to groups. After consultation and assessing the impact cuts were made in other ways which had less impact on groups and the services they offer.

FootprintLocal Project Wins National Award
A project that aims to keep older people warm in winter and makes sure they can afford to pay their fuel bills has scooped an award from a national charity.

Derby City Council's 'Warm and Well in Derby' project, funded by Derby City Council and NHS Derby City, which works with local organisations to distribute energy advice and practical help to pensioners, has been named best in the East Midlands region by fuel poverty charity National Energy Action (NEA).

The project has been hugely successful, helping many older people in the city improve the warmth and comfort of their homes and ensuring affordable warmth through the cold winter months.

It is hoped that the funding the project will receive as part of the award will go towards the development partnership working, including links with Warm Front to make sure that people can get insulation and heating improvements, and further engagement with GP surgeries and the local Age Concern Shop with energy advice drop-in sessions.

The project will now go on to compete against initiatives from around the country for a national award of £3,000. It has already received £2,000 funding from NEA.

For more information on the project email Anne Wayne or call 01332 255900.

Beyond Fundraising - a Seminar
Generating income to become more sustainable

This is a one day interactive seminar to enable churches and faith-based community groups to get greater understanding on how to become self-sustaining.

Every organisation, faith-based or not, is facing economic challenges. For churches, engagement with the community increasingly involves meeting identified needs of the communities which they serve as well as providing spiritual and moral guidance.  With the change in economic climate, it is becoming increasingly necessary to move from relying on grants, to earning income.

The seminar will incorporate interactive sessions to which delegates can bring their questions and case studies of those who have been there, done it, and have lived to tell the tale and written materials.

The day will be run by Anthony Collins Solicitors in collaboration with accountants Mazars.  Both firms regularly advise churches working in their local communities.  This is a partnership with Derby Diocese and Church Urban Fund.

The seminar take place on Tuesday 15 June from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the YMCA, 770 London Road, Wilmorton, Derby DE24 8UT
For more information or to book a place email Joy Bates or call
01332 388686.
