Microfinance - a Seminar
The Human and Physical Environments Research Group of the University of Derby are holding a seminar on Wednesday 28 April from 1:00 to 2:00 pm in Room N613 at the Kedleston Road site.
Prof Paul Mosley will present a seminar entitled: Microfinance - from Dhaka (Bangladesh) to Derby (UK) Microfinance is one of the great development innovations of the last twenty years and seeks to overcome financial exclusion by providing peer monitoring, along with credit, to low-income people - clients are typically organised into solidarity groups each of whose members keeps a watch on the other and makes sure that loans are repaid. In this way, poverty, especially female poverty, has been reduced and default rates have been kept low, typically less than 3% across the developing world. Now microfinance has spread to industrialised countries, as governments and NGOs begin to see the possibilities for bringing down poverty in a way which, potentially, 'pays for itself' and may be useful in protecting vulnerable households from becoming prey to loan sharks and doorstep lenders.
Everyone is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be provided. For further information call Dina Abbott on 01332 591757.
