FREE Computer Training - Book Now!

Our FREE computer training sessions are held every Tuesday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, at Community Action, 4 Charnwood Street, Derby. 
 
The sessions are designed for people to come along and learn how
to navigate
 around our website. Members of Community Action  now have the facility to have their own page within our website to promote the work their group does and also list their news and events.

Swine Flu - the Facts

We are now in the middle of a cold winter and although  swine flu has not been in the news lately it is still important to be  aware of the symptoms and what practical steps you, as an individual, and your organisation can take to minimise the impact.

Easter Treasure Trail

Rainbows, the  children's hospice are organising a family Easter treasure trail event at Markeaton Park on Monday 5 April. 
 
They are looking for voluntary and community groups to join in the event.   
It will be aimed at families with children and will help to raise awareness as well as funds for Rainbows.
 
Planned activities include:
Easter treasure trail; face painting;
and egg and spoon race.

DCIL Support Group

Derbyshire Coalition for Inclusive Living (DCIL)  has set up a project supporting people with mental health conditions. 
 
They run drop in sessions in Matlock, Swadlincote and Bakewell every 2 weeks. So if your group works in this field these sessions could be very useful for your users.
 
DCIL organise advice and information for people and offer training to anyone interested in mental health and social inclusion.

The conference will take place at
The Quad, Market Place, Derby from 12:30 to 4:30 pm on Tuesday 16 March.

conferenceEast Midlands Funding Forum
East Midlands Funding Forum (EMFF), part of Regeneration East Midlands, are holding a network meeting to discuss future funding for 2010/11 and beyond.
 
The EMFF network meeting will be following up on last year's Funding in the Economic Downturn. There will be guest speakers from a range of different funding sources giving their perspective on funding in 2010/11 and beyond. Speakers confirmed for the day so far include:
 
Big Lottery Fund;
Charity Bank;
Citizens Advice;
Institute of Fundraising; and 
The National Trust.
 
The meeting takes place on 9 March from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Leicester YMCA.
 
The event is for EMFF members, local authorities and other organisations involved, working with, contributing and investing into the third sector.

Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements 
Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) have been established by legislation for the purpose of assessing the risks posed by sexual, violent or other dangerous offenders who may cause harm to members of the public, including victims, children and other vulnerable persons.
 
The following half-day briefing event has been arranged in Derby with the aim of raising awareness about the individual and shared responsibilities of agencies to work together under these arrangements to protect the public. 
 
The aim of the course is to provide agency professionals with an introduction to Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) 
 
The briefing session takes place on Monday 1 March 2010 from 9:30 am to 12:45 pm at Wilderslowe, 121 Osmaston Road, Derby, DE1 2GD.

A date for your diary and a survey!
 
The date for your diary is 24 March 2010. On this date we will be holding the first forum for all voluntary and community groups in Derby called Your Sector, Your Say.
 
To find out the needs and priorities of voluntary and community groups in the city we would like you to take part in a short survey. The outcome of the survey will inform the Your Sector Your Say forum - so this really is a chance for you to get your issues in the spotlight.
 
You can fill out the survey online or visit the Community Action  website, download a copy and email it back or print it off and post it back to us.
 
The Your Sector, Your Say forum will be held on 24 March 2010 at the new YMCA building on London Road, Derby. The outcomes from the forum will then be refined into an Action Plan for the voluntary and community sector in Derby. Please take five minutes to complete this questionnaire - it will help to determine the priorities for the future of voluntary and community organisations in the city.
 
 
Sense Forum 
The Derbyshire Forum for People with Hearing and Visual Impairments will be held on Friday 19 March from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm at Scarsdale Hall, The Arkwright Centre, Hardwick Drive, Chesterfield.
 
The forum is a two way consultation for people with hearing and/or visual impairmants, professionals and people with an interest in this area. It provides a means of input into council developments that have an impact on the lives of people with hearing and/or visual impairments.

Do you find it difficult to record income and expenditure in an easy format? Do you struggle with annual income and expenses sheets?  If so, this course is for you!
 
By the end of this session you will be able to:
 
Understand the role of a treasurer;
Recognise the importance of recording all financial transactions;
Complete a cash book and petty cash book;
Reconcile a bank statement; and 
Complete an income and expenses sheet.
 
The course takes place on Thursday 25 February from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at Community Action, 4 Charnwood Street, Derby. This course is FREE for voluntary and community groups and £50 for statutory organisations.

YMCAPersonal Best
Level 1 Award in Preparation for Event Volunteering

YMCA Derby (Learning and Development) are running a programme called Personal Best at their Campus in London Road, Derby.
 
The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games will require 70,000 games volunteers. The Personal Best Programme aims to prepare people for this challenge by offering training and volunteer opportunities in the lead up to 2012 and beyond - ultimately aiming to encourage 20,000 people into work.
 
Personal Best is open to people from 16 to 50 who are not in work or education and everyone over 50.  The programme includes four full days of training on consecutive Thursdays plus a minimum of 20 hours voluntary work in the community.

ProHelp - FREE Professional Help! 
ProHelp is a group of professional firms who have come together to provide free professional services to voluntary and community organisations in their local area.
 
The professional firms undertake one-off projects, which could include feasibility studies, structural surveys, development of PR and marketing strategies and business plans, legal and accountancy advice and property valuations.
 
Members of ProHelp approach the work in the same way as they would any fee paying customer. The only difference is that the community client is not charged for the work undertaken.

EqualityNew Horizons - New Possibilities for Race Equality 
The East Midlands Development Centre is hosting a series of FREE  events throughout 2010.  The first in the series highlights the importance of Delivering Race Equality within the context of New Horizons, a programme launched to improve mental health care and well-being.
 
Topics for workshops and plenary sessions will include:
 
perspectives on race equality;  
increasing access to psychological therapies;
effective use of data;
community development workers; 
the personalisation agenda; and
service user/carer engagement.
 
The first event takes place on Wednesday 28 April 2010 at the
Peepul Centre, 28 Orchardson Avenue, Leicester, LE4 6DP.
Places are limited and early booking is recommended.

Level 2 Awards are aimed at social entrepreneurs who have established a social business/project. The awards are for £15,000 plus non-financial support for a year.
 
UnLtd are looking for enterprises that are operational with an established track record of meeting a clearly evidenced need. The award enables individuals to spend more time developing their enterprises, building infrastructure and increasing social impact and revenues.
 
Expressions of interest for the awards open on Friday 26 February.

Think Family Stakeholder Event

This event is aimed at strategic managers, operational managers and practitioners who deliver services that impact on Adults, Families, Children and Young People in Derby city.

The day will illustrate the national picture in relation to Think Family; an introduction to Derby's Think Family vision and strategy;   an overview of the Derby Pilot projects implementing the Think Family Approach; and an opportunity to network and discuss ways of improving the outcomes for children, young people, families and adults
 
Think Family is a cross-departmental programme jointly funded by DCSF, the Home Office, Ministry of Justice and the Department of Health and supported by the Department of Communities and local government.

moneyLooking for Health and Social Care Grants?
Is your organisation a social enterprise delivering services in health and social care?
 
The Department of Health's Social Enterprise Investment Fund has capital grants from £100,000 to £450,000 available for social enterprises working in health and social care that require funding for capital assets.
 
Your organisation could receive a grant to enable you to:
 
secure your premises;
purchase vehicles;
update your systems;
refurbish; and 
purchase equipment.

The application deadline is 19 February 2010 for posted applications and 21 February 2010 for emailed applications. However, grants will be awarded on a rolling basis and there is only a limited pot of money available. In order to access the funding it is important that you submit your application as soon as possible. Any money awarded must be drawn down by 31 March 2010.
 
 
Nationwide Small Grants Programme 
The Nationwide Foundation has expanded its Small Grants Programme criteria for charities working with older people.  Small grants can now be applied for by charities working for the benefit of all older people to improve their housing needs or address financial exclusion.
 
The Nationwide Foundation's Small Grants Programme makes grants every two months.  Grants of up to £5,000 are available to registered charities with incomes of under £500,000.  The grants are also available to charities that work with survivors of domestic abuse, focusing their funding on finance and housing issues.
