Swine Flu - the Facts

With the onset of winter and the colder weather swine flu has been back in the news. It is very important to be aware of the symptoms and what practical steps you, as an individual, and your organisation can take to minimise the impact. Please visit the NAVCA
website , Derby City Council website or the new Pandemic Flu website for the latest guidance and information.

Hello!

Welcome to the latest issue of Reach Out.

The headline news this week is Derby City Council's review of policies and practice on grants - don't miss out on having your say. We also have news of funding for musical projects and a fund called Community Cashback made up of seized criminal assets.

Watch this space for more news next week!  If you have news that you'd like to share with the voluntary and community sector in Derby, please let us know.
Derby City Council logoThe Future of DCC Grants - Have Your Say
Derby City Council is carrying out a review of its policies and
practice in awarding grants to voluntary and community
organisations and the way it monitors how the grant is spent.

A four week consultation to gather views was launched at the Annual Compact Forum on 3 November. The responses received will be used to develop a report and recommendations with a further opportunity to comment on these in January 2010.

The aims of the review are to:
  • get consistency in process and practice across the Council;
  • see if there is a need to simplify the system;
  • cater better for applications for grants from new organisations;
  • support voluntary and community organisations to develop; and
  • make sure the Council's processes and practice meet the requirements  of the Derby Compact, which is the framework for how voluntary and community organisations and the Council work together.
To complete the survey please click here. Paper copies are also available by contacting Olwen Wilson, Room 156, Derby City Council, Council House, Corporation Street, DE1 2YL email or telephone 01332 255508.

It is very important that you take part in this survey and give your views as what you say will influence the way in which Derby City Council
develop their policies and practice for awarding grants.

More information is available on the Council website

Please note that the deadline for completing the survey is Friday 4 December 2009.
NAVCA logoEmpowering the Voluntary Sector
This is a one day workshop, delivered by NAVCA, exploring how to use the principles of public law to challenge unjust and unfair decision making by public bodies.

The aim of the workshop is to equip third sector organisations to use the principles of public law and the Compact to negotiate effectively with public bodies. Issues covered on the day include how to deal with unfair funding cuts and consultation and how to identify if a public body's decision making processes are lawful.

The workshop is open to all team members, staff and volunteers from third sector organisations who are funded by, or seeking funding from, public bodies.

The workshop will take place on Tuesday 1 December at  Community Action, 4 Charnwood Street, Derby from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. The cost is £35 per person including resource pack and lunch.

For more information and a booking form contact Diane Scott on 07920 202595 or email or visit the website.

educationGypsy and Roma Children - Education Study
The Department for Children, Schools and Families has issued a report on Improving Educational Outcomes for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Pupils.

Between February and June 2009, case studies were undertaken in ten secondary schools, five primary schools and five alternative education provisions. The sample was selected from schools with Gypsy, Roma and Traveller pupils that completed and returned a national survey in the autumn term 2007.

The main aim of the case studies was to explore in greater depth some of the strategies and approaches described by schools in the questionnaire returns. Researchers conducted face-to-face interviews with senior leaders and other key staff from schools and local authorities, and led focus group discussions with pupils, parents and teachers.

To read the full report on the findings of the study please click here.

DWPRace and Recruitment - DWP Report
The Department for Work and Pensions has published findings of research into race and recruitment. The report, commissioned by the DWP led Ethnic Minority Task Force has found that there is significant discrimination in recruitment based on whether a person has a name indicating they are of 'white British' origin or a name indicating they are from an ethnic minority. HSE5 Steps to Risk Assessment
A risk assessment is an important step in protecting your workers and your business, as well as complying with the law. It helps you focus on the risks that really matter in your workplace - the ones with the potential to cause harm. In many instances straightforward measures can readily control risks and for most, that means simple, cheap and effective measures to ensure your most valuable asset - your workforce - is protected.

The law does not expect you to eliminate all risk but you are required to protect people as far as is 'reasonably practicable'. The Health and Safety Executive has published a template to create risk assessments and health and safety policies to make it easier for you to carry out the assessments with the minimum of fuss.

trumpetMaking Music for the Elderly
Concertina is a registered charity that makes grants to charitable bodies who provide musical entertainment and related activities for the elderly. This not only brightens up their lives, but also provides a therapeutic benefit to their health and well-being.

Concertina is keen to support smaller organisations which might otherwise find it difficult to gain funding. Since its inception in 2004, it has made grants to a wide range of charitable organisations nationwide in England and Wales. These include funds to many care homes for the elderly to provide musical entertainment for their residents.
